I'm 47. I guess that is old. Except for hearing some talk on sports radio about the Miami players doing the "soulja boy" during the UNC-Miami game (a bit prematurely given that they lost) I was kind of puzzled by this whole "Soulja Boy" phenomenon.

Then I heard about this thing called the internet, so I decided to look up this "soulja boy" So, for the benefit of the others of you who are hopelessly out of the mainstream of pop culture, here are the lyrics:

ayy i got this new dance fo ya'll called tha Soulja Boy

u gotta punch den crank back three times from left 2 right

Soulja Boy Up In This Ho
Watch Me Crank It
Watch Me Roll
Watch Me Crank Dat Soulja Boy
den Super Man Dat Ho
Now Watch Me YOOOOUUUU
(Crank Dat Soulja Boy)

Soulja Boy up In This Ho
Watch Me Lean And Watch Me Rock
Super Man Dat Ho
Then Watch Me Crank Dat Robocop
Super Fresh, Now Watch Me Jock
Jocking On Them Haterz Mayn
When I Do Dat Soulja Boy
I Lean To The Left And Crank Dat Thang
(Now YOOOOUUUU)
I'm Jocking On Yo B***h A**
And If We Get To Fightin
Den im ****in on ya b**** a**
You Catch Me At Yo Local Party
Yes I Crank It Everyday
Haterz Get Mad Cuz
I Got Me Some Bathen Apes

Soulja Boy Up In This Ho
Watch Me Crank It

Watch Me Crank Dat Soulja Boy
Then Super Man Dat Ho

I'm Bouncin On My Toe
Watch Me Super Soak Dat Ho
I'ma Pass It To Arab
Then He Gon Crank it up for sho (sho)

Haterz Wanna Be Me
Soulja Boy, I'm The Man
They Be Lookin At My Neck
Sayin Is dem rubberbands man
Watch Me Do It
Dance
Lean'N To
Nope, You Can't Do It Like Me
Hoe, So Don't Do It Like Me
Folk, I See You Tryna Do It Like Me
Man That S*** Was Ugly

All too clean off in dis ho
Watch me crank it watch me roll
Watch me crank dat roosevelt den supa soak dat ho
supa soak dat hoe

All too fresh off in dis b****
Watch me shuffle watch me jig
Watch me crank dat Soulja Boy
Den supaman dat b****
supaman dat b****
supaman dat b****

I've had a herniated disc in my back for a couple of years now. I'm trying hard to avoid surgery. Most of the time it is okay, but sometimes when I wake up in the morning I can barley walk upright. Within the last few weeks I've developed a planter wart on the ball of my foot (how can anything that small hurt that bad?). Between the two of them when I first wake up in the morning and am making my way to the kitchen I look like I am doing the soulja boy unintentionally.

Soulja Boy is to Hip-Hop as Cinderella/Ratt/Kix are to Rock Music.
True hip hoppers don’t want to claim Soulja Boy.
True rockers don't want to claim 80's Hair Bands.

Yes, men 'crank that'. Over the past 5-7 years, Atlanta had 1-2 new dances each year go national through music videos.

Note: "Crank That" was banned from a Cincinnati HS homecoming.

Sure we do. Motley Crue was an 80s hair band. And both Cinderella and Ratt are fun if you take them for what they are.

I had never heard of this phenomenon until this thread. An iPod in the car and other (mostly unintentional) measures that separate me from youth culture are serving to prematurely age me.

With that said, I agree that the Barney version is hot.

That seems a bit harsh. It may not be your cup of tea . . . it is certainly not mine, but I dont see how it is any different from the Twist, the Hand Jive, the Tootsie Roll, the Macarena, the Electric Slide or the YMCA (those are just teh ones I have thought of off the top of my head). Dances that people think are fun and that are done set to a particular song.

I think saying that someone essentially has to be a moron to do these is a little over the top

no i think grown folks line dancing is moronic. the twist, the shag, and other dances have certain requisite moves but invite more individuality to the dance. i'm more of a nonconformist i guess. but if you think dancing like the backstreet boys is fun then more power to you.

I'd have to agree with you there. I don't see it as an urban culture or even a 2007 vs. 1957 thing, thing, but as a line-dance thing. I don't think I've ever seen anything that I find more silly looking than the "Texas style " line dancing a la CMT and Urban Cowboy. In fact, unless you are skilled enough to be a member of Paul Taylor, Pilobolous, Merce Cunningham, Mark Morris, or one f the other premier dance companies, synchronized dancing of any kind looks kind of silly to me.

Channing

perhaps we disagree on the terms to be used. Lots of things look silly. If you go to a wedding I would say most people on the dance floor looks silly. Doing the Hora looks silly. that doesn't mean its not fun. I certainly don't take myself so serious that I wont participate in a line dance. I have been to one Scottish Keili (sp? I am sure I just butchered that) in my life and it was a great time.

I would certainly not go so far as to say participating is indicative of someone having only half a brain.

Yes. And I would put the best of them up with professional dance troupes.

I really wish we were a professional dance troupe :D . We were just regular undergrads (wide range of dance skills) who spent a couple hours a week in step-practice. Dancing (especially group) is a part of our culture, which makes us a little more accepting of all kinds of group dances (even dances like 'Soulja Boy' or 'Achey Breaky'). It’s just a cultural experience & perception thing. :)

I'm sad to say this song is growing on me.

Last night, I actually dreamt about the The Lion King singing "watch me super soak dat ho". 8 hours later, I'm bored out of my mind grocery shopping and I inadvertently start mumbling "watch me, Yooooouuuuuuu". Next to the deaths of Tupac and Biggie, this has been my saddest day in hip-hop. I'm turning in my Platinum Hip-Hop Credibility Card today!

Since this thread isn't dead, I going to take a stab at translating the lyrics :) :

Soulja Boy Off In This Hoe
Watch Me Crank It
Watch Me Roll
Watch Me Crank Dat Soulja Boy
Then Super Man Dat Hoe
Now Watch Me Do
(Crank Dat Soulja Boy)
Now Watch Me you!
(Crank Dat Soulja Boy)
Now Watch Me you!
(Crank Dat Soulja Boy)
Now Watch Me you!
(Crank Dat Soulja Boy)

Hello, my friends call me Soulja Boy and I am here to party!
You can watch me dance.
I can dance with my hands.
I can dance with my entire body.
Look at me. I’m Soulja Boy and I can dance very well.
When I dance, I sweep young ladies off their feet.
Look at me. Yes, YOU should look at me
(I’m Soulja Boy and I can dance)
Look at me. Yes, YOU should look at me.
(I’m Soulja Boy and I can dance)

Soulja Boy Off In This Hoe
Watch Me Lean And Watch Me Rock
Super Man Dat Hoe
Then Watch Me Crank Dat Robocop
Super Fresh, Now Watch Me Jock
Jocking On Them Haterz Man
When I Do Dat Soulja Boy
I Lean To The Left And Crank Dat thing
(Now You!)
Crank That Soulja Boy
I'm Jocking On Yo I'm a real wanker for saying this.I'm a real wanker for saying this.I'm a real wanker for saying this.I'm a real wanker for saying this.I'm a real wanker for saying this. %$#@^%$#@^%$#@^
And If We Get The Fightin
Then I'm Cocking On Your I'm a real wanker for saying this.I'm a real wanker for saying this.I'm a real wanker for saying this.I'm a real wanker for saying this.I'm a real wanker for saying this.
You Catch Me At Yo Local Party
Yes I Crank It Everyday
Haterz Get Mad Cuz
"I got me some bapes today"

Hello again. I’m Soulja Boy and I’m in here to party.
You can watch me do different dances.
I can also move as fast as superman, when I’m trying to impress ladies while dancing.
I can also dance very rough and tough, like I’m a cyborg.
I’m so cool, I can dance and still look manly.
I’m dancing even when some of you hate that I can dance better than you.
I can even do a dance that I invented,
When I do this dance I like to shuffle left and wave my hands
Now you can do this dance also!
Do my dance. I invented it and named it after yours truly.
I dance so well, you will feel inferior.
So inferior, you will want to come to fisticuffs with me to regain your manhood.
But, I’m too superior. My dancing will cause you to fail.
I also like to dance at parties in your suburban neighborhood cul-de-sac.
I will dance every day of the week
Some people hate me,
Because I like to dance in $300 athletic shoes from Japan (wikipedia “A Bathen Ape”)

I'm Bouncin On My Toe
Watch Me Super Soak Dat Hoe
I'ma Pass It To Arab
Then He Gon crank it up 4 sholl (sholl)
Haterz Wanna Be Me
Soulja Boy, I'm The Man
They Be Lookin At My Neck
Sayin Its The Rubberband Man (Man)
Watch Me Do It (Watch Me Do It)
Dance (Dance)
Let Get To It (Let Get To It)
Nope, You Can't Do It Like Me
Hoe, So Don't Do It Like Me
Folk, I See You Tryna Do It Like Me
Man That S#!t Was Ugly

Watch me dance, kind of like Michael Jackson or a Ballet Dancer,
Watch me dance. I dance so well, ladies tend to get aroused
I’m so cool, I can let my best friend dance in my place
And he will dance just as well as me
Many people will envy and wish to be me because of this ability
My birth name is Soulja Boy and I have XY chromosomes
Some people like to look at the beautiful jewelry around my neck
Some people think I have this jewelry because I’ve engaged in illicit activities
But NO! I have amassed my jewelry because of my dancing!
I can dance. I can dance better than you. I am the best dancer.
You can try to dance, but I do not think you can look as good as me.
