This does not apply to teams like Duke , UNC, Kansas Kentucky , etc.

If you were a team like Iona, South Dakota State , Winthrop etc. with absolutely no chance of winning the NCAA tournament , would you rather win the NIT or lose in the first round of the NCAA?.

Always choose NCAA over NIT, with the special exception that I'd rather win the NIT than lose as a 1 seed to a 16 seed.

Indigestion or constipation?

This is an easy question for a Duke fan. From Duke's perspective, losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament is much better than an NIT championship. Now, if you are a mid-major, the answer might be different. UC Santa clara: 1st round NCAA appearance or UC Santa Clara: NIT champions. If a mid'major has a roster full of young players, an NIT championship run would probably be more beneficial long term than 1 game in the big dance.

For recruiting purposes, I'm sure just getting to the NCAAs is far better than doing anything in the NIT. Northwestern got to the NIT many times, but what did everyone talk about until this year? Not the NIT. Dawkins won the NIT at Stanford... twice. He got fired. Nobody dreams of playing in the NIT.
