It seems the football marketing is Bull City proud. Hopefully someone with more skill than me can post some images. I cannot really recall Duke athletes making the "bull" sign in the past -- maybe Quinn Cook did once I'm thinking(?). Will be curious if this catches on.

If you pull up the Duke Blue Planet videos where the players interview each other after games and at other times, you'll see most of the guys do it at the end of each segment. I've seen Amile do it a ton, and I love it because the Bull is my hometown. I think I first saw it with the Justise and Jah team. At the end of the segment, the guys bump two fists together with thumbs out and say "Bull City we out!"

Yes, they have been doing it for a few years now. I like it too, though I'm not from Durham--it's catchy and it makes a nice connection to the local community.

I always wondered why Amile, and others, were doing that hand sign - now I know!

Bull City, we out!

What is the origin of the Durham fist sign? Limited Googling got me nowhere.

Per slide 18, it traces back to a mustard jar:

Just kidding - know you're asking about the hand gesture (though the mustard was news to me). With respect to the hand gesture, I recall seeing a 2012 photo of a slam poetry competition (I think) with some of the folks throwing dem bulls.

Here's an older photo of Durham mustard, which the description says refers to a type of mustard not a place of manufacture. Also, Bull Durham tobacco was begun in the 1860s but not owned by the Duke family business till 1899:
