What's with the dark unis at home?

I have seen many games this year where the home team is wearing their colors instead of the traditional home whites. I guess the home team gets to choose, but is there a reason we are seeing this trend this year more than ever?

Just guessing, but over the years most NFL and now NHL teams have gone to dark unis at home. I think players feel tougher or stronger in dark rather than white. Either that, or it's a Nike thing.

Makes more sense in basketball than football.

I never understand home football teams in the south wearing dark uniforms in September for day games.
