I suppose it's time to start this thread. There is not much going on right now with Marcus Stroman solidly with the Blue Jays and everyone else waiting for minor league assignments.

Stroman is also on the USA team for the World Baseball Classic. As usual, Nate Freiman will play for Israel, with Kenny Koplove also a part of their expanded roster.

The US is moving on to the World Baseball Classic Championship Game tomorrow night after pulling out a 2-1 victory over Japan, which was previously undefeated.

The US will take on Puerto Rico, which is undefeated in the WBC. The US will send our own Marcus Stroman to the mound against Seth Lugo of the NY Mets.

If you haven't been following the WBC, it's really compelling stuff. In some ways, it kind of feels like an international College World Series but with mostly pros. Guys show real emotion - more emotion than I have ever seen from most of them in MLB.

US-Puerto Rico should be basically an intense, emotional MLB all-star game.

US roster includes:

C - Posey, Lucroy
1B - Goldschmidt, Hosmer
2B - Kinsler, Murphy
SS - B. Crawford
3B - Arenado
OF - Stanton, McCutchen, A. Jones, Yelich

A bunch of solid SPs and a very good bullpen

Puerto Rico roster includes:

C - Y. Molina
2B - Baez
SS - Lindor
3B - Correa
OF - Beltran, Pagan.

Plus, my favorite play-by-play guy in all of baseball, Matt Vasgersian.

USA 4, Puerto Rico 0 through six innings.

Marcus Stroman started for the US and has not allowed a hit. He's on a pitch count, and is unlikely to have the opportunity to complete the game, but he's been impressive to say the least.

USA wins 8-0. Stroman was named MVP. That's a great honor, especially on this stacked USA roster.

Still waiting for Bailey Clark to get his assignment with the Cubs. I was thinking South Bend, but with each passing day it is seeming more like a return to Eugene.

The MLB Draft starts on Monday with MLB Network having coverage starting at 7pm ET. It is not as big a deal for Duke compared to last year, but there should still be good news for Duke players.

Justin Bellinger was picked in the 22nd Round at 647 overall by the Reds. James Ziemba was picked later in the round at 655 by the Angels. Jimmy Herron was picked in the 31st Round at 932 overall by the Yankees.

Two signees were picked in the 38th Round as the A's picked Wil Hoyle 1131st overall and then the Tigers picked Steve Mann 1145th overall. That looks to be far enough back that we should expect them on campus.

Bailey Clark announced as part of the Eugene Emeralds (short-season A) roster for the Cubs. A bit disappointing for a college pitcher. For reference, their other top-10 picks have started at South Bend and Myrtle Beach.

Hope Clark tears it up and moves quickly to South Bend.

Bailey recently made his season debut for Eugene.

Kenny Koplove signed a minor league deal with the Marlins and they have him at the fantastically named (even by minor league standards) Batavia Muckdogs in Short Season A Ball.

The Angels signed James Ziemba and started him at their Rookie League affiliate in Orem.

Koplove was a 17th round pick and now is hardly a prospect. Ziemba was a 22nd rounder in THIS year's draft. Those are appropriate short-season guys. Short-season is where you typically send guys you just drafted, high school arms, and roster filler.

It is disappointing for a fifth round pick in LAST year's draft to be repeating short-season ball. As I noted, none of their other picks in the top ten rounds of the 2016 MLB draft started this season below full-season A ball. And a few started in high A.

Yeah, it's kind of sad that we may be able to see Clark at his best in the pros after not being able to see him at his best at Duke. Mike Matuella is also one who may not be able to get back to where people thought he would be before his injury.

Moderately interesting article on Marcus Stroman, including several Duke references: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2717390-blue-jays-marcus-stroman-the-pound-for-pound-king-of-mlb-mound-swag?utm_source=cnn.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=editorial

It's been a while since we have had transactions...

Brian McAfee has been in limbo for a while, but Tampa did release him. The Mariners signed him and started him at Everett in Short Season A ball.

Pittsburgh promoted James Marvel to High A Bradenton.

Clark struggling at Eugene. Despite being older than average for the league, and probably the highest-drafted player from the 2016 or earlier draft class in the league, he's sporting a 5.71 ERA and 1.76 WHIP over 9 starts.

Hope he gets things straightened out. He is behind in his development: he should have realistically been in low A ball this year rather than short-season ball. He needs to have a strong last two months and hopefully he can move more quickly through low-A next year. But, first things first, he needs to start getting hitters out in short-season ball.

Just for CDu, Bailey was promoted to Low A South Bend, but with not much to show for it in his first start.

Yeah, it has been a disappointing season for Clark. He has battled control problems (32 walks in 48 innings) all season, while also getting hit a lot. His WHIP on the year is 1.747. Hopefully he rebounds next year.
