I assume this Player's Tribune posting is the official breaking of this very sad news:

Thanks for sharing. What an incredible tribute to his dad. Thoughts and prayers with the Capel family.

Coach Capel will always have a very special place in the hearts of every NC A&T Aggie.

Especially significant for me as I was a sophomore when in the 1993–94 season, Capel was head coach at North Carolina A&T, who finished 16–14 with the MEAC Tournament championship and automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.

That NCAA tourney was especially crazy for me that year b/c who did the Aggies almost beat in the first round? Arkansas. A game that wasn't sealed until the last two minutes and free throws (and Corliss Williamson) put it out of reach for the Aggies.

Some of us know how the rest of that tourney went...

Capel's performance was so outstanding that the Aggies only got to keep him one year and he left for Old Dominion with one of our best recruits (Joe Bunn).

Get well Coach!

Yep. Sent it to my son and told him to read it when his roommates were gone.

Double challenge - if you make it through that one without tearing up - try the next one about the hockey player.

As did I. But I'm telling you right now, if you haven't read this, stop whatever you are doing and read it now. I'm reposting the link so you don't even have to waste even a second trying to find it.

Bring your tissues.

Wow. Wouldn't have said it was possible, even more respect for Jeff after reading his article.

Oh jeez, I had NO idea Jeff's dad was stricken with this terrible disease. Wonderful article that really puts certain things in perspective. Like, say, my being super grumpy about losing to NC State the other night. It's just a game, but there are so many other things in life that are way more important.

Very moving and fascinating story.

I love The Players' Tribune - all the articles make the players seem more likeable and human.

Very well written and provides some much needed perspective. Wow. A 'disappointing' basketball season thus far is nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Worth 2 kleenex for me.

Suddenly, the Duke MBB team W/L record became so much less important. Jeff's Dad is dying a slow, miserable death and Jeff's fighting his way through an injured and re-injured team that is being relentlessly and mercilessly analyzed/criticized by the evils at espn (among many others) and he's doing his temporary job in the shadow of the GOAT. Amazing story. Finding time tonight for an extra moment of prayer for the Capel family.

A tragic situation like Coach Capel's makes the trivial problems of our team seem, well, trivial. My best to Jeff and his family. Hope our Coach comes back soon just to lift some of Jeff's burdens off of him. Duke is family. Just ask any Duke player, past or current. LGD

I can't imagine what Jeff is going through at this point in his life. I know some Duke fans have questioned the looks he has on the sidelines. With his Dad's illness on his mind, I don't see how he can coach as well as he has. It certainly puts things in perspective. Prayers for the entire Capel family. Just know that we Duke fans love you and pray for you. God bless.
