Time stamps:

Welcome to Episode 68!

1:40 Duke beat Miami and then lost to NC State this week. Let's break them down.

5:00 Jason is worried.

7:50 What's up with Jayson Tatum?

11:20 Sam asks Donald what's worse, Duke's free throw percentage or their 3 point percentage against State?

13:10 Donald pivots back to Miami, a game he attended.

18:00 Is Duke going to be unranked? More importantly, how many wins does Duke have left? Jason brings up home court advantage.

22:00 Sam previews Wake Forest, a "weird" team. He doesn't remember Randolph Childress in college.

30:20 Duke plays Notre Dame on Monday. When will we be free of the oppression of Bonzie Colson? Jason holds down the preview.

39:10 Sam gets clever with Player of the Week, Donald and Jason just make the right pick.

41:40 Parting shots! Does Jason have a gambling problem? We also discuss Coach of the Year, in light of Chris Collins being on the precipice of taking Northwestern to the tournament (shh, no jinx).

47:30 Donald talks about the scene at Duke this past weekend.

Until next time, go Duke!

Thanks for the podcast and for the rational discussion at a time when a lot of us as fans are feeling pretty emotionally distraught over yesterday's performance. I agree that there were a lot of ebbs and flows and that whenever we got the lead up to 8--10 and seemed poised to blow the game open like we did against Miami, we'd waste an opportunity by missing an open shot or turning it over and they'd come back down and make us pay. A perfect example was at the end of the first half - we were up 9 with the ball and 20 seconds left. Getting a bucket would have given us a double digit lead, and State goes into halftime feeling like they're probably done. The worst possible outcome that should occur is that we go into the half only up 9, which is still a pretty comfortable lead. Yet somehow Matt manages to turn the ball over with six seconds left, they come back and hit a three and now we're only up 6 and they are right in the game.

There were a number of key sequences like this where we blew opportunities to put the game away. The team seems to commit mental lapses and loses focus, and our opponents capitalize on our mistakes and make us pay. The difference between a 20 point blowout like the Miami game versus a close loss like against State is razor thin for this team and can hinge on a possession or two.

Thanks for the podcast, guys. FWI, Jason has mentioned his Atlanta Falcons fandom. I forget which episode but he talked about how a former Duke QB was picked up by the Falcons and that he hopes he never gets to play because that means something bad has happened to Matty Ice.

You are talking about Sean Renfree who was a backup QB for the Falcons for 3 years but was cut just before this season started. It may have been overlooked, but Sean Renfree just signed a contract a couple days ago with the Tampa Bay Bucs. He's widely expected to make the team as the #2 or (more likely) the #3 QB. The Bucs offensive coordinator is Dirk Cutter, who was OC in Atlanta until 2 seasons ago. He has done well bringing in former Falcons that he knows. It is a good sign that he wanted Renfree.

-Jason "much as I like Sean, I never wanted him to play in Atlanta as Matty Ice is too good!" Evans
