Just saw Fences. Just saw Denzel Washington win one or more Oscars. He's the leading actor and the director. He's also one of the many producers. And playwright August Wilson will be in the running for best adapted screenplay--of his his own play--which won both a Tony and a Pulitzer. I also think Viola Davis is a shoo-in nominee for best supporting actress.

Stephen Henderson, Jovan Adepo, Mykelti Williamson and child actress Saniyya Sidney are all excellent and any of them may garner a nom as well.

Wilson is (was) perhaps the best playwright of our time. He is best known for his so-called "Pittsburgh cycle" of ten plays over ten decades. Fences is the one from the 1950s. He died in 2005 at age 60. He also wrote six other plays.

All I will say about Fences is that it ain't a comedy. I'm pretty sure, though, that it is not a tragedy.

According to the Minnie Star-Tribune, Washington has said that he intends to film all ten of the Pittsburgh cycle (http://www.startribune.com/denzel-washington-says-he-ll-film-all-10-of-minnesota-legend-august-wilson-s-plays/407917226/). Looks like he'll get there as Washington has said HBO is backing him.

Sidebar: The Minnie S/T also has a sidebar story on why it has taken 30 years for Fences to get to the big screen (http://www.startribune.com/what-took-so-long-for-august-wilson-s-minnesota-built-fences-to-get-to-the-big-screen/406941896/). Worth a read.

I initially thought this wss going to be about all the fences they were going to build to keep the dump on the hump faithful confined to certain areas.

Comedy ends in marriage. Tragedy ends in death.

I saw the trailer for this movie. Maybe it's an amazing film, but man... that trailer!!! It just makes the movie look incredibly generic and clichéd.

I'd like to tell the ending, but that would be a spoiler.

As for your view of the trailer, let me just say that nothing August Wilson wrote is clichéd or generic.

This is a sound explanation of the film, Wilson, and what I too expect to be a plentiful award's season for the movie.

Everyone should see Fences (even if you wait until streaming/DVD), and more importantly, go watch a production of any Wilson script; he was an amazing writer.
