View Full Version : A Birthday The day after Christmas!

Yep, that's right. It's my birthday. The day after the biggest holiday of the year. All my life people have told me I got screwed in the "birthday lottery."
How? I had the usual one more gift than my brother, birthday cake, etc. I didn't miss anything. Funny how we tend to look at things.
Today I turn 65. Officially, I am now a "senior citizen". But I don't feel that way most days, heck, I still do a young man's job.
And I have a lot to be thankful for.
A loving wife of 38 years.
A son that makes me proud every day for the man he became, a great husband and father.
Three beautiful, athletic granddaughters, who are the light of my life.
The fact I became a Duke fan as a child, and have witnessed Duke's greatest moments, from Bubas to the great Coach K, and everything in between.
The glad tidings received when we were told my brother's lymphoma was in remission.
Too many other blessings to list here.
Yesterday, the kids were over. They drug out an old "Twister" game. The youngest asked me if I wanted to play. I said "Baby, if I get down there and can't get up, are you gonna lift me?"
Kendyl replied, ", No, but me and Kandyce and Kady can!"
They just don't know, but they lift me up every day of my life!
We sat down for our Christmas dinner. Decided to forego the usual turkey and ham thing, a friend had brought me a couple of deer tenderloins, and we augmented that with ribeye steak. I did it all on the grill, and we decided that would be a new tradition.
A friend I grew up with, played football with in school, and served together in the USMC was there, and the wife made my favorite cake (orange sherbet cake, simply awesome), we ate, and had a great time recalling the old times. Mom had to bring out the ancient photos (she's 85 now, but as spry as a mere child of 60, lol) and there were laughs by the ton.
So as I sit here and reflect, there will always be those that say I got shafted with a birthday of December 26th.
No I didn't.
Today, I am the luckiest man in the world.....

Thanks! We will see about the bass tomorrow. Going to Belews Lake near Stokesdale, where there are plenty of largemouth bass, and also lots of their cousins, the invasive spotted bass. Hope they are eating, the weather should be perfect for fish foolery! (overcast and mild)

Happy Birthday, man! Great post about all your blessings.
My mom, who died six years ago on Mothers' Day at age 64, shared your birthday, so today has become a little bit of a sad day for me. However, your post picked me up a little, so thanks.

Happy birthday!
You share a birthday with my aunt. We will be heading to a brewery to celebrate this evening, so I'll be sure to take a sip for you!

Happy burthday! Glad you got the best present ever - time with family and friends.
Birthday lottery? Try April Fools Day! Not me, but a good friend... Amazingly bad gifts. (I do have four nieces and nephews born within a week of Christmas. They get taken care of...)
Happy Birthday!, regardless.

I was born on THE day, the 25th. My parents made sure I didn't "suffer." Never had to work on my birthday.
My sister though - never forgave me - she was 6 1/2 and I ruined that Christmas for her, my parents were at the hospital the whole day and she didn't get to open presents.

My aunt, who was 7 when my mom was born, never forgave her either. Her mom went into the hospital early Christmas, and my mom was born just after midnight.

Happy Birthday, BD80, as well!
My birthday is Jan 6th, Old Christmas to the English. My birthday presents were usually after-Christmas sale items and stuff Mom bought me for Christmas but forgot to give me on the 25th. Christmas morning, I'd be surrounded by crumpled wrapping paper and my mom would say, "Where's the . . . oh, never mind. You'll get it for your birthday."
PS. Happy Birthday.

That's our anniversary. In my family, we called it Little Christmas, the twelfth day of Christmas, Three Kings Day, the Epiphany, or the Circumcision. I always thought of it as the day the tree and the decorations came down. Apparently, it changed names several times in the church when my parents were growing up.

I refuse to share my b-day with The Circumcision.

Would you prefer "the bris"?

It was my brother's 5th birthday (in September) the day I was born. While he's always said it wasn't a big deal, I never believed him. Since my parents usually spent their time placating me as the younger sibling on our birthdays, he generally got the short end of the stick. He paid me back over the years with beat downs and noogies and all the stuff a much bigger, stronger, resentful older brother does.
