I don't know, but I just purchased 4 center-court lower upper deck tickets to Duke-Elon two days later for $60 total - plus they're throwing in 4 hot dogs and 4 drinks!

Cheers!:)

I didn't realize the concession vouchers were in the envelope until I got to the car after the purchase. A pleasant surprise!

Will be exciting to see him on the floor. I was trying to think of other players who missed their senior year of high school. The only one I came up with was Shelden. As I recall, it took him until halfway through conference play before he really started to look comfortable out there.

IIRC, John Smith back in the '80s missed some time but I don't remember of it was his junior or senior year. Not a Giles caliber recruit but it caused him to be overlooked.

What will happen between UNLV and Tennesse St that makes Giles more prepared to play? A few days? Bring the kid on now.

It's like nine days later, plus it's a home game against a completely overmatched opponent. Just like with Tatum and Bolden, I think K will want to bring him back in a really low-stress kind of game for just a few minutes. If he's doing well then K may leave him in longer. Plus it's on the other side of Finals week, for whatever that's worth.

Beyond debut at home and easy opponent (although UNLV is pretty bad this year) as others have said, K wants to watch Giles in a few more full-contact 5-on-5 practices before he plays in games. With injuries and travel schedules those practices haven't happened much over the past few weeks. There should be some time for those between the 10th and 19th (even with exams).

Erik Meek missed most of his senior season after being hit by a car. He was not very effective until his Junior year, though in fairness, he was not that highly ranked so he may never have been effective as a freshman/soph even without the accident.

Was Shelden's suspension because of the rape allegation against him? (IIRC that was dropped once he chose not to declare for the NBA draft out of high school...)

Not sure this piece from the Ringer has been linked yet in any relevant thread, but it reflects the conversation on the board about the pros and cons of Tatum at the 4 (v. the 3) and playing two bigs once Giles returns.

Basic conclusion is that Jones-Allen-Kennard-Tatum-Jefferson is the most likely and best lineup for the foreseeable future, both because Tatum can board and spread the floor (and start the break, and guard other 4s, and shoot, and generally cause mismatches) and because Amile has been an animal at the C spot. The author speculates that Giles could upset the applecart if he is amazing, but that it's hard to know how good (read: healthy) he'll be and whether he'll force K's hand right now.

If Giles comes back anywhere close to where he once was (and I expect him to do so), there is NO way he'll be kept out of the lineup for long.
That doesn't mean he'll start from day one....let's see how he does if and when he plays (the two mid December games).....as others have noted, K likes to
play his five best guys, and I would expect that by some time in January (at the latest) Giles will easily be one of the best five.

Totally different animal than either of them. By all accounts, he is an athletic freak, incredibly quick and nimble for a guy his size with soft hands. He has an array of lightning fast post moves and is often compared to Chris Weber in terms of his athleticism and skill as a power forward or center.

This is the best highlight video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyBTdjAIUNs) I can find of Giles - it's from the 2015 U19 world championships, which I remember watching and thinking what a special player he is. Starting at about the 1:15 mark you really start to see the array of offensive skills and what makes him such a unique talent at 6'11". I think the best comparison - I know we all love comparisons - is not Webber or Garnett but Danny Manning.

From that video, he looks much more athletic and explosive than Danny Manning ever was, in my view. The other comparison I have heard with some frequency is to Anthony Davis. I'll take any of them, though :)

That's a good article for sure. I truly wouldn't be surprised if he read some DBR before writing it.

This paragraph though is very wrong:

One of the biggest benefits for Coach K in terms of running Team USA over the last decade has been exposure to the way the modern NBA game is played. He has used guys like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Carmelo Anthony almost exclusively as small-ball PFs, and occasionally even as Cs, in international play, and he has brought that model to the NCAA.

As everyone knows, Coach K was using stretch-4s and/or versatile 4s waaaay before he coached the Olympic team. Coach K was "modern" back in the 80s.

Absolutely. Coach K used Anthony and James at the four in his first Olympic head coaching gig. NBA team weren't ahead of K on this.

The thought of Chris Webber on this team makes me a bit giddy.

Can you imagine Weber playing for ol' roy? Roy would run him over with his bus multiple times, with ever increasing repetitions, each time CWebb tried to use one of roy's precious TO's. Webber would never have called that critical time out in the championship game! Of course, roy has never run out of TO's in his coaching career.

I suggest watching some of his YouTube footage... lather, rinse... repeat. There have been Weber comparisons but I see some significant differences in their skill sets. Giles appears to be a better ball handler and shooter... I think Weber was a better passer and a bit longer( a superficial evaluation of Giles based on limited information). We'll know a lot more in the next month but rest assured, if Giles comes back healthy, he will be a tremendous force.

budwom
12-10-2016, 09:46 AM
When it comes to Giles (again, if healthy) he can definitely excel on the front line along with Amile and Tatum, regardless of what past teams have done.
Giles can guard anyone he's likely to face at the four, Tatum likewise at the three, and Amile in the middle....the mobility questions/problems past teams might
have had with two bigs do not apply with Giles and Amile...

Having said that, I could see times when K goes smaller just to make use of his plethora of guards....the core rotation, then, would seem to
be Amile, Giles, Tatum, Allen, Kennard, Jackson and Jones....and presumably Bolden the eighth guy....

It's not just his physical condition that is a consideration as to when he plays.

He is about to become an integral part of, what has now become, a pretty well-oiled machine. This team is playing really well and integrating him into that situation needs to be done wisely and well.

The time he is getting on the floor with this team in practice this week will be invaluable to that integration.

I expect to see him on the floor on Monday night, because he will have had this week of full practice with the team.

Damn, this continues to be fun.
