Hey everyone!
I'm a life long Duke fan from South Dakota. I have been to a couple road games that were in the midwest, but never down to Durham.....until next week!!! My wife and I are flying into town Thursday, hanging out until Sunday and hitting up the App. State game on Saturday. I know it's a holiday weekend, so some of the on campus things are not available, but I am looking for suggestions on things to do while in town. Eating places, bars, pregaming, post gaming, what to get a look at during the game.
Any suggestions would be great and I cant wait to get down there!!

Thanks!

Bull City Burger for lunch.

Infinite good restaurants for dinner, Bullock's BBQ is rock solid since you can get steaks and stuff in South Dakota, get some NC BBQ.

Eat at bojanges too.

You're gonna gain weight and clog your arteries, but it'll be worth it.

Search the off-topic board, there are some similar threads with good answers.

Durham has exploded with great restaurant options during the last 10 years. The bars have improved as well. I'm a big fan of Bull City Brewery and Tyler's Taproom. For barbecue, I like Bullock's (just don't order anything other than the BBQ) but some people strongly disagree. Q Shack is also great and you'll find less disagreement on that recommendation.

Walk all around campus. Visit the gardens if it's a nice day, and maybe even if it's not. Check out the Hall of Fame (Honor?) area in Schwartz-Butters (the building attached to Cameron at the end of K-Ville).

Also, IMO no trip to Durham is complete without eating at either the Waffle House or the Cookout on Hillsborough Road. Preferably both, although your doctor probably would not recommend it.

Sarah P. Duke Gardens, on the opposite edge of the campus from the stadium, is beautiful any time of year and well worth a stroll for an hour or two. Walking from the gardens to the stadium, or vice versa, takes you right through the middle of campus and will give you an appreciation of the original campus architecture.

Duke Chapel is a gothic-style cathedral in the middle of campus and is also worth a walk-through. I don't know what the current policy is for taking elevator rides to the top, but if it is available you get a stunning view of the campus and surrounding area.

I second these nominations for getting a great feel for the beauty of the Duke campus! I graduated in '83 and have unfortunately been back for 5 games so I can't give any recommendations about restaurants/bars, etc. Hope you have a memorable trip!

Kramer you'll note the little pitchfork beside your board alias which we call a Spork. DBR's merit based posting system awards sporkz for posts that achieve DBR's standard of wisdom and/or demonstrate unbridled hatred of UNC, whether clever or just cathartic. That it is called a "spork" is no small coincidence and reflects the heavy influence of BBQ, baked beans and slaw consumed regularly by DBRers, frequently with a beer (see off-topic thread) for breakfast. All the preceding suggestions in this thread are good ones...

This is all good.

East Campus is also very pretty -- Georgian bricks instead of Gothic Wonderland -- and very peaceful. Some good restaurants on Broad Street nearby, or at least there used to be.

Can a non-student still jump on the East-West bus for free? If so, you can do that to go between the two campuses although they may be working on a less-frequent holiday schedule.

I did just that as recently as a couple of years ago, when I traveled from Colorado for the Kansas football game. I found parking to be slightly easier (read, cheaper) around East campus than on West, so I took the bus back and forth to the game. My 62-year old gray hair drew no unwarranted attention on the rides.

Good to know, thanks.

Kramer, if interested, there is a bus stop right in the center of West Campus that will take you right to the center of East Campus. Pretty simple, short ride.

But I lived on or just off East for three of my four years, so I'm a little biased. It looks more like UVa than what you normally see of Duke's campus on TV.

New on campus: check out the rebuilt West Union at the corner of the main quad across from the Perkins Library. Also, bring your appetite -- I hear the Asian food section is really good.

I would definitely second (or third) suggestions to check out East Campus in addition to West. East also puts you close to a lot of the good Durham spots to check out. Might be worth a quick swing down 9th St. including a visit to The Duck Shop for Duke swag in case the campus store isn't enough.

As a beer enthusiast, I visit Sam's Quik Stop every time I'm in town. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but it has an exceptional selection of craft and import beer and recently expanded to house a full beer bar with many taps.

Also great to see the revitalized downtown. To continue my beer-themed suggestions, Fullsteam and Ponysaurus are two great Durham breweries to visit.

For breakfast or lunch I always love Fosters and Parker & Otis.

Enjoy your visit!

Sam's is a veritable temple of beer.

Not if you're flying into Derm.

My two cents:
-The Durham Rooftop Bar
-Nana Tacos
-Q-Shack
-Dames Chicken and Waffles
-Armadillo Grill (nostalgic. I realize the food is mediocre. And it's on campus. Perfect for pregaming)

Moreover, it's the old Blue Light, the drive-inn littered with Duke students drinking beer in the afternoon. Ahhh.... the 18 YO drinking age of yore.

Armadillo Grill has been closed for a few years. They relocated The Loop to the 'Dillo's space prior to the West Union renovations.

The App. State game is at noon.

But make sure you eat before you get to the game.

Cameron Indoor Stadium has many charms.

Good food offerings are not among them.

Are they still there? Couldn't afford to go there much in the early 80's but the BBQ was the best. Back then there was an all you could eat place on Guess Road called The Acorn that had pretty decent BBQ and Brunswick stew for students on a budget. It probably isn't there any more.

Don't get lost and take 15-501 South. The stench of cheating gets strong a few miles outside of Durham.

Everyone has given you a good list of the best diners and burger joints. They're all great. Though I'm not a big fan of Bullocks. If you really want the best cue in Durham, take a 20 minute ride down Hwy 55 to south Durham and hit up Backyard BBQ Pit. It's a hole in the wall - exactly what a great cue joint should be. No sauce necessary there my friend.

If you're interested in some slightly more upscale experiences, Durham really has become a restaurant hot spot.

-- I'm a huge fan of Piedmont near the Durham Performing Arts Center. Great farm to table spot. And the bartender there makes the best French 75 I've ever had.
-- Vin Rouge and Rue Cler are fantastic french spots, not too expensive really.
-- M Sushi is just about my favorite sushi place ever. Da bomb.

Totally agree with Durham Rooftop Bar. If the weather is good, it's an awesome spot for a drink and to take in the city.

Also, maybe there's a cool show or something at the DPAC?

Have a blast!

Alert! Just checked out the site and dd is correct. It is very dated. Security is very dated, especially regarding the advice about seeing players after the game. They no longer come out on the floor afterwards, but can be approached well after the game in the courtyard as they are being escorted by security to their cars in the Card parking lot. Security will try to keep you away, but the players will often overrule them and approach you----especially Grayson. You also can no longer get on the court after the game. The new security rules have RUINED the family type atmosphere at the games-----and that is a fack Jack, and not just MHO.

If someone could also post the link to some previous threads on the subject, I believe the original poster would be able to learn so much more. Most of the really good restaurants have not been posted yet, such as: Vin Rouge, Monuts, Toast, Mateo, Dame's Chicken & Waffles, Parizade, Nana's, Piedmont, Rue Cler, Watts Grocery, Mothers and Sons, Bleu Olive, Tonali, and Foster's Market. There's a few more, but those should do it. I guarantee that none of those I mentioned are anything like Bojangles.

I don't think there is a campus shop, restaurant, or vendor of any kind from before the '80s that is still around. Maybe the Marketplace (East Campus dining hall) has some kind of continuity that makes it qualify despite major changes, or maybe Uncle Harry's on Central (not sure when that was built and it's also gone through renovations). Even from the '80s it's probably just the university store and convenience store (also recently renovated) in the Bryan Center.

I suppose the Great Hall had been around for quite a while, but no longer. And let me tell you, walking into the newly-renovated West Union is one hell of a shock.

No one with any sense disagrees. :) One of my few disappointments with Duke recently has been the amount of development they have done on East Campus. It's really losing that peaceful pastoral feel that many of us loved so much.

The old-fashioned barber shop across the hall was classic, a leftover from the more authentically Southern Duke of the '30s and '40s.

The new West Union is definitely worth a look, if only to see what some college food choices look like these days compared to when most here were in school. It snagged Duke a #1 ranking in US campus dining. Bonus for Clocktower was taking a turn ringing the Victory Bell outside the West Union last Friday afternoon . . ..

I'm taking the opportunity to glom onto this thread because I also am a long time Duke fan headed to Cameron soon for the first time. I appreciate all the tips above and realize this will be sacrilegious to you "cue" fans, but I would like a recommendation for a few restaurants with vegetarian options (seafood does not count - it's still an animal!). I usually rely on TripAdvisor, which has yet to steer me wrong, but would love to hear from the locals or those familiar with the area. Thanks.

You should check out Sprout, the vegetarian dining option in the rebuilt West Union. Also, the building is worth an exploration, although it would mean more to those who remember it from before.

[There were two eras: before Bryan Center, when it was the only dining option on West Campus and harbored in the basement the barber shop, post office and Dope Shop; then after Bryan Center, when the basement establishments moved elsewhere.]

Sagegrouse, thanks for the recommendation. I was not able to get to Sprout, but enjoyed a few vegetarian meals at other eateries. Before I mention them for the benefit of others who may have similar dietary interests, I would like to provide a report of my first trip to Durham, which I hope will not be my last.

As I mentioned on the ticket exchange forum, I was planning to attend the men's Duke-Maine game with my husband as my milestone birthday gift. We also obtained tickets for the women's game against South Carolina. The entire experience was charmed. We stayed at the Washington Duke (still there). We arrived Friday, 12/2 and walked over to Cameron. While we were taking in the displays, Nolan Smith walked in. After I pointed him out, my husband encouraged me to approach him, which I did. He was so gracious and posed for a picture with me. We then visited the Hall of Fame, where we saw Luke Kennard, but did not recognize him in time to talk to him. Next, we saw people lined up. We asked what was going on. It turns out that a tour of Cameron was about to start and we were asked whether we would like to participate. Um, yes please! We saw Nate James working with Javin DeLaurier and received interesting facts and intel from our tour guide Pete, who confirmed that Nolan is genuinely friendly and personable.

Onto the game: We arrived about 4:15 for the 5:30 tip-off and decided to enter Cameron from the Hall of Fame. Saw Nolan again (No, Nolan, we were not stalking you). Once we were at our seats, we took it all in. The players. The coaches. The students. The band. The mascot. Crazy towel guy. Mickey, daughters, and grandchildren. The energy. The experience is similar to that of attending the ultraruns (100 mile races) that my husband does and I crew - no description can do it justice. We enjoyed it all. Seeing Jayson Tatum and Marques Bolden only added to the excitement. We then attended the women's game against South Carolina. Again, we were impressed with the energy. At the end of the game, Oderah Chidom hopped into the area behind the Duke bench and hugged and posed with friends and fans (we were right above in the second row of the upper level). After the victory, the fans behind us told us it was the best women's game in Cameron in years.

We leave tomorrow and I am already hoping that we will be able to return. I hope that those of you who are fortunate enough to attend games regularly do not take it for granted. With no intent to offend anyone, I found the Cameron experience similar to that of visiting the Sistine Chapel - it was that awe-inspiring.

For anyone interested in restaurants with good vegetarian options, I offer the following: Nosh (portobello sandwich with veggie slaw), Elmo's Diner (vegetarian hash & sweet potato pancakes - both specials that my husband and I split), Bull Durham Bar (Rocket Science IPA, hummus, pumpkin risotto), Washington Duke breakfast buffet, and Gonza Taco y Tequila (pina cilantro margarita and veggie chile relleno).

Let's Go Duke!

Definitely some great suggestions in the thread already (Chapel, Duke Gardens, East Campus, Q Shack, Durham Hotel Rooftop Bar, Monuts, Elmo's).

If it's a one off pilgrimage to Duke, stay at the Washington Duke-convenient, easy walk to Cameron, and bar is always full of Duke and college hoops celebs before and after games.

If it's a quick trip just about a game @ CIS, Thomas Center is fine, just not as nice as the WD. Attached to the business school, so even more convenient. Named for Wendy's founder Dave Thomas, who frequently visited Duke Med School to lose weight.

Staying in downtown Durham gives you a lot more eating and drinking options than staying right on campus (Thomas Center) or directly across the street (Washington Duke). Only been for drinks at the Durham Hotel, but DH, 21c Museum Hotel, and Aloft are all centrally located downtown. Others can chime in on the rooms/staying there.

If you only plan on going to one Duke game in your lifetime, go for an ACC game when class is in session. It's easy to scalp for any games other than Carolina, but better to buy in advance via Stub Hub or equivalent for a one off experience and see everything.

Can maybe find tickets online or via scalpers in the undergrad (Cameron Crazy) section for a Winter break game, but atmosphere is not nearly as fun, electric, and energetic as ACC games.

If you just want to go to a game and have travel flexibility, just show up 15-30 minutes before any midweek game other than UNC and you'll get in for face or below. Weekend games (especially vs local ACC schools) are more difficult/expensive to scalp.

Politics, religion, and college hoops discussions are far less contentious and more civilized than discussions about North Carolina BBQ. Q Shack and Backyard BBQ are both very good. Bullock's is meh. Best local BBQ is Allen & Son. Only downside is that it's located on the outskirts of a pastel hell with a primitive culture that actively discourages education. But the 'cue...

Geer Street Garden Fullhouse Brewery The Pit around the original Durham Bulls Park. Piedmont is a very good high end good restaurant near the Carolina Theater.

Had I seen your post before your visit, I would have recommended the portobello sandwich at Nosh. I am not a vegetarian, but it is where I take my friends, who are, when they are in town.

Thanks for your in-depth description of attending your first game at Cameron Indoor Stadium !! Glad you enjoyed it and found some good vegetarian restaurants to sample. LOL, I've never heard of CIS being compared to the Sistine Chapel (unfortunately, Michelangelo was not around in the 1940's to paint the ceiling!) but I like the analogy.

If you want to see "intensity", come back sometime for the Carolina game.

FYI! The Thomas Center is no more. In January, the JB Duke hotel opens on the same site, run by the Washington Duke Inn. Looks very nice.

Thanks for the heads up. We used to always stay at the Thomas Center, but it got a little beat. Nicer version would work, but screw up our scalping strategy. Leave the Washington Duke precisely 30 minutes before tip. Get good seats for face or below, buy crappy BBQ sandos inside, and still be in our seats by tip.

Were stunned to see the 2001 UVa team bus leaving the WD on our time table. Got smoked by 40 and taunted with, "Should have warmed up" and "Why are you ranked"?

Personally would never get on a bus with Pete Gillen out of fear his ginormous melon would cause the bus to tip over. Safety conscious fraidy 'Hoos should have walked over with us. We would have held their hands in cross walks and graciously escorted them to Card Gym.

Much better (NC) BBQ than before, and certainly much better than the garbage at Allen & Sons.

Just to confirm this statement: Avoid Allen & Son like the plague -- the most overrated 'que on the face of the planet (you're better off eating barbeque in South Carolina or Kentucky). Q Shack is not bad, but it's not NC barbeque -- if's more Texas style ... Backyard BBQ offers the snob appeal of a hole-in-wall place, but the BBQ is fairly mediocre. I think snob appeal also has to do with the negative reviews of Bullocks -- it's THE barbeque establishment in Durham, hence a lot of people get satisfaction for putting it down (if you go, get the sliced barbeque).

Hold me back, I oughta...

The Hursey's sandos are better than the Bullock's sandos at CIS.

Hey everyone!
I'm a life long Duke fan from South Dakota. I have been to a couple road games that were in the midwest, but never down to Durham...until next week!!!

Thanks!

My wife and I have stayed at a number of locations in the Durham area on our trips to and from South Carolina and Florida. Over the last few years it's been clear that there's no reason to stay anywhere other than the Duke Washington Inn if there are spaces available. It has great facilities, wonderful rooms, fantastic Internet and it's right off the campus. ( no this is not an ad, I get no kickback from the Inn Nor am I related ) I guess I should note that coming from the New York metropolitan area, the prices don't scare us off. The only reason to stay elsewhere is if it's not available

I hope you have a wonderful stay and see all the fantastic facilities that are part of the new (well relative to 74) campus.

have you by chance stayed at the new residence inn just off east campus on main street?

Let's Go Duke!

Saturday was my first trip to Cameron as well and my sister and I enjoyed it as much as you did, although I am jealous of your Nolan sightings. Sure a 39 point blow out of Maine may not have the same energy as a wire to wire conference game but the building itself has a magic air to it. I loved getting to see so many of the things I've read about on this board that don't show up on TV, like the crazies greeting the visiting starters.

Also many thanks/sporks (if I could, is there some sort of time limit on when posts can be sporked?) to all who recommended Bull City Burger. Both I and my vegan eating sister were thoroughly impressed. She lives in Richmond, the foodie capital of Virginia, and we love Burger Bach but Bull City Burger might have them beat.

Stopped by the JB Duke for a few pops after the NCSU game. Don't know about the rooms, but interior is a huge upgrade over the Thomas Center. Two bars, but drafts not available on the first floor. Has only been open a week.
