I always hate starting this thread, but the regular season tips off on Friday.

Right now, Quinn is returning to Canton and Andre is returning to Canton.

Ryan was technically the first NBA call-up of the season because he was already under D League contract when the Hawks signed him.

Marshall was recently assigned for the first time, heading to Westchester for practice on Saturday and then quickly being recalled. The Knicks are one of the more progressive teams in utilizing their D League affiliate, so expect him to be assigned frequently when schedules align and when they do not need him for their active roster. He may be able to even repeat the special day that Cleanthony Early had last season of being one of the rare players to appear in a D League game and and NBA game in the same day.

Thanks for sharing this. Agree with the use of the Westchester D league team by the Knicks. Hopefully he won't share Cle's accomplishment of being shot in the knee. (Although somehow I don't think Marshall would be hanging around a strip club in the early morning hours.)

Marshall got the assign-and-recall treatment again on Monday and then got assigned again today. This one is actually expected to last more than a day as he will likely play in their exhibition game on Wednesday, which is the first battle with the Nets D League team. Since the D League version of the Nets are playing in Barclay Center until their home is finished, I wonder if any enterprising scalpers will be able to trick people into thinking that they are buying NBA tickets.

Marshall had 10 points and 10 rebounds in 36 minutes as the D League Knicks matched the NBA Knicks with a 107-103 exhibition win over the D League Nets. Carrick Felix had 13 points and 8 rebounds in 28 minutes in the loss.

Quinn starts his season at 7pm ET on Friday. It looks like the D League has switched broadcast platforms from YouTube to Facebook Live, so I think you will need to check there if you want to watch. I have no idea what this means for replays and highlights, which the league has done well in recent seasons.

Quinn led all scorers with 27 points and added 7 rebounds in 36 minutes, but Canton lost 134-111 to Grand Rapids. In the win, Michael Gbinije had 8 points in 32 minutes on assignment from the Pistons.

It looks like YouTube will still have some highlights:

As of right now, Marshall is still assigned to Westchester so I will operate under the assumption that he will play in their opener on Saturday at 7:00pm ET. Quinn also plays at that time and Andre starts his season at 8:30pm ET. Again, the games are on Facebook live. The links do pop up some time before the game so you can check the D League schedule for specific events if you want to watch.

Marshall did not end up playing. He and some other Knicks are still listed as being assigned and not recalled and none of them played so who knows what the story is there.

Quinn led all scorers with 29 points in 41 minutes, but Canton lost 120-118 to Long Island. Carrick Felix had 15 points in 27 minutes.

Quinn plays on Friday at 7pm ET. Again, these games are on Facebook Live, which usually means that links are not available this far in advance. As with other seasons, the league website is running a weekly prospect watch poll voted on by people who follow the league. Quinn was 7th in the preseason poll and then moved up to 5th after his scoring exploits in the opening weekend:

Quinn had 31 points in 38 minutes in a 103-96 loss. Marshall was of course preoccupied with playing in another game earlier in the day and was not needed for double duty. I suspect that is more commonly the result of playing a D League game earlier in the day then suiting up for the NBA game later and not the other way around.

Quinn's numbers are at least as good, if not better, than Seth's when he was in the D-League. Seth hasn't played quite as well in Dallas this year as he played last year, but his numbers are respectable (although the Mavs are terrible). Quinn was a superior defender when compared to Seth, at least while at Duke. Seems that Quinn ought to be getting a call from some NBA teams at some point.

But, like, how? Vander Blue is listed as #1. Quinn is listed at #10.

OK.

Vander Blue: 22.8 pts, 4.7 rebs, 2.6 asts, 1.3 stls
Quinn: 24.4, 5.3, 5.6, 1.7

Averages don't tell the whole story, I get it. But #1 vs #10?

Additionally, Quinn is killing it.

How does a performance like that not garner more attention? like a call-up....

How does a performance like that not garner more attention? like a call-up...

Generally, December call-ups are rare, as teams can't sign players to 10 day contracts until January. November call-ups happen, but those are often guys who just missed 15 man rosters and fill an early need, like Ryan Kelly was technically the first call up of the year this year. Out of 105 call ups in 2014-15 and 2015-16, only 4 were in December.

Marshall is looking good. Although Mason and Miles are better athletes; Marshall is no Geoff Crompton or Warren Martin. I have always thought that Marshall had better basketball instincts. His ability to consistently be in the right place at the right time is superior to his brothers. I am not saying he is, or ever will be a better player than them; just that he see's the game better. Especially when it comes to defense and "garbage" plays.

His greatest attribute is his willingness and enthusiasm to follow his leader, while leading himself. In my opinion; this will keep him playing basketball while getting paid for a long time.

Many years ago I took a biology lab for comparative vertebrate anatomy at UNC that met in the evenings. Steve Hale was also taking the lab. (we were both premeds with scheduling issues) He was a nice guy, very unassuming, but was really interesting was how not-large he was in person. I don't know what he was listed as on the UNC rosters, but in person he was maybe 5'10'' 170. You'd never have guessed from looking at him, if you didn't know who he was, that he was a basketball player on a major NCAA team.

I think some of the inflation may due to a slightly faster pace than the NBA. No team has an offensive rating as high as the Warriors for example.

There is also the issue that talent tends to drop off severely after the first seven or so players in each rotation and when a legitimate NBA player is playing on assignment, they can easily put up pretty big numbers.

It's hard to see how Quinn doesn't deserve a shot (ba-duh tching!) on an NBA roster. He's been playing as good or better than Seth played and Seth is now commanding a solid role on an NBA team. I get the feeling Quinn will get an open look (ba-duh tching!) this season when an injury happens or roster rules open up. If i'm not mistaken if he were to get called up now the NBA team would be on the hook for more contract liability than if they call him up later.

I heard the commentator mention Singler and for a second I was concerned that Kyle had been sent to the D league....

Yeah, Quinn is looking really good and putting up excellent count stats. I am guessing that teams don't have an immediate need and so want him to stay sharp as opposed to picking him up to be the 12th (or 13th or whatever) man and getting no burn.

But he certainly looks ready - which is a very strong testament to Quinn because there were definitely questions about his ability to translate even after his senior year.

I don't think it's quite that simple necessarily. There is some demand for point guards right now. There is just a ton of supply. The sixers just signed Chasson Randle to a 10-day after working out Randle, Cat Barber (who's on the sixers D-Leagie team), Briante Weber, and Yogi Ferrell. I was a bit dissapointed not to see Quinn at least get an invite. Of course, that doesn't even count contending teams like Cleveland, who are likely to be more interested in veteran free agents like Mario Chalmers or Jarrett Jack.

Again, these games are part of the D League Showcase, so they are all held in one location, this year in Mississauga. Front office personnel from all the NBA teams will be at the event as well as scouts from a number of international leagues, so expect to see some of the bigs disappear and head to the Philippines later in the season and players of all positions looking for summer jobs in Puerto Rico. The single location makes it easier to broadcast all of the games, so Andre's game at 12:30pm ET tomorrow will be ESPNU. Unfortunately, the possible matchup of Quinn and Ryan at 6:00pm ET is only on Facebook Live.

Quinn's work is not going unnoticed by people who follow the league as he sits in 7th in the league website's prospect rankings and 10th in the D League Digest rankings. There were also rumors of NBA teams who liked what they saw at the showcase. Now we just need one to take the plunge.

While we all hope Quinn finds a spot for a 10-day, Cleveland likely won't be the spot. They already have a rookie point guard they like in Kay Felder, but want a more reliable vet for the playoff push. Now it's certainly possible that they could call Quinn up as a stop gap if they feel like they have a vet signing in the works, but aren't ready to pull the trigger for whatever reason. I just don't see that as the most likely scenario.

Outside of Cleveland, there have only been two point guards who have earned 10-days so far this year, Chasson Randle (who almost earned a full time slot out of camp if not for an injury) and 32 year old vet Ronnie Price (who hasn't officially signed his yet). Beyond this, even with Quinn at #7 in the prospect watch, it should be noted that 1, 2, and 8 on that list are all point guards, and those other three have all suited up for NBA teams before. That's not even accounting for veteran free agents still out there or guys on the trade block. All this is to say that while teams might be noticing what Quinn is doing, there is so much depth in point guard availability that it won't take a conspiracy for him not to get signed in the near future. There's just lots of deserving point guards out there.

One game, some guy named Xavier Mumford dropped over 30-points and another night, somebody else, (Shawn Long anyone? Bueller?) dropped 45! Munford did get bought out and signed by Barcelona this week so maybe he's secretly Lionel Messi. He is also a guard who got a brief chance to make an impression on the NBA last season. Hopefully Quinn gets one of those soon.

Watching Ryan playing in the D League is good fun. He seems to be playing at a different speed than everyone else, but his variety of fakes, spins, and other crafty moves seem to lead to him putting up enormous numbers everytime he plays there. It was good work by the Celtics and Red Claws to get him there essentially stealing a free lottery pick in the draft.

I know there has been talk of the AAU-level defense in the D-League, but, with the caveat that this is a highlight video just as much as high school prospect mixtapes are, Marshall looked good! Drive and slam from the 3 pt line, plus a 22 footer and an 18 footer. He is putting in work and building a respectable skill set that extends beyond screen and rebound - keep it up, MP3!

Patience is still required. I've said it before, but breaking into the league for the first time as a point guard is tough. Unless I missed someone this past week, out of the half-dozen or so point guards to sign 10-day deals this year, all but one had previous NBA experience. The one guy who didn't, Chasson Randle, only missed out on winning a spot with the Knicks out of camp due to injury.

That being said, the patience may pay off sooner rather than later. The Cousins trade last night saw New Orleans send out 3 guards while taking back two big men. That leaves them with huge holes in the back court and an open roster spot. There have already been some rumors that they are considering Quinn, who was in camp with the team, for a 10-day. Now it's certainly not a lock, as they are also looking to trade some of their now expendable front court pieces and could bring in a guard via trade quickly which would diminish the need, but this is by far the most promising opening for Quinn yet this season.

The New Orleans Pelicans are expected to extend guard Quinn Cook to a 10-day contract, a league source confirmed on Saturday afternoon.

ESPN's Marc Stein was the first to report that Cook was signing with the Pelicans.

Cook, a 6-foot-2 point guard, will fill the roster spot left vacant by shooting guard Wayne Selden Jr., who left the Pelicans after the completion of his 10-day contract and agreed to a contract deal with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Cook, 23, was on the Pelicans' preseason roster before he was one of the final cuts before the regular season began in October. He performed well in the preseason, averaging 8.3 points and 2.7 assists in three games.

Last month, Cook was extended two 10-day contracts with the Dallas Mavericks before he was waived and went back to the NBA Development League with the Canton Charge.

In five games with the Mavericks, Cook averaged 5.4 points and 2.4 assists in 15.4 minutes per game.

Cook was a four-year player at Duke, helping the Blue Devils win the national championship in 2015. Cook went undrafted in the 2015 NBA Draft but emerged in the NBA Development Laague, earning the 2016 rookie of the year award.

I guess they let him take jump shots there! His toe was on the line, so he didn't threaten his perfect 100% 3 point shooting record. And yes, I'm talking about the shorter, inner college line, not the pro line.

Plumlee appears to have become much more fluid on both the offensive and defensive ends... he just needs court time and a faster reaction time to become a full time NBA player.
