I got an email this morning from the Alumni Association inviting me to a pre-game brunch before the UNLV game December 10. So far, so good. But it included the following pitch.

"It should be a fun game for both Chase Jeter, who is from Las Vegas, and Derryck Thornton, who went to Findlay Prep, in Henderson!"

The online version is here (http://app.bronto.com/public/viewmessage/html/47/8lg2a41fxxneudgv2a46o3vgl657e). Oh my.

Yowzah! That is embarrassing. What are they smoking out there in Las Vegas that they missed the last 6 months?

Some amateur forensic analysis:

The Chronicle reported (http://www.dukechronicle.com/blog/blue-zone/2016/04/duke-basketball-to-play-unlv-at-new-las-vegas-arena-in-december) the Duke-UNLV game on April 2. GoDuke announced (http://www.goduke.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_LANG=C&ATCLID=210879589&DB_OEM_ID=4200) Derryck Thornton's transfer on April 10.

This means that the Alumni Association drafted that e-mail sometime in those intervening 8 days, and failed to edit it in the 7 months thereafter. Note the similarity to the Chronicle article.

A game in Las Vegas would be a homecoming for rising sophomore Chase Jeter—who attended Bishop Gorman High School—and a homecoming of sorts for rising sophomore Derryck Thornton, who grew up in Chatsworth, Calif., but attended Findlay Prep just outside of Las Vegas.

It should be a fun game for both Chase Jeter, who is from Las Vegas, and Derryck Thornton, who went to Findlay Prep, in Henderson!

Alternate theory: maybe it's not a mistake. Maybe Thornton will find it a fun game (to watch on TV), or maybe he'll share that #12 jersey (https://twitter.com/SportsChannel8/status/792175326877081600?lang=en) with DeLaurier and play after all.

Any smoking was undertaken in Durham. It's a Duke Alumni Association email.

That's probably close to accurate. I'd like to think that a casual read would have brought about a fix. Whatever the details, it's really embarrassing.

I like it.
