No surprise that Duke comes in at No. 1:

http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/rankings

I was a little disappointed to see Kentucky ahead of Kansas for No. 2 (Kansas was No. 2 in the coaches poll) -- I was hoping our early matchup with Kansas would be No. 1 vs. No. 2.

Five ACC teams made the top 25
1. Duke
6. UNC
8. Virginia
13. Louisville
19. Syracuse

Five more ACC teams got votes:
28. FSU
31. Miami
32. NC State
36. Virginia Tech
44. Notre Dame

The difference between the AP and the Coaches' polls are interesting. Both Pitt and Clemson got significant support from the coaches, but no votes from the writers. NC State got strong support from the writers, but no votes from the coaches.

Patience, grasshopper. Allow Kentucky time to under-perform. Go with the flow.

Could still be #1 vs #2, only 3 points separating the two and Kansas could gain votes if they are impressive vs #11 Indiana on the 11th.

Also if Duke doesn't trip up...don't want to be jinxing anything here!

Could we then root for an outcome like Duke vs. Texas a few years ago? That would be fun. :p:cool:

I think ESPN, which will broadcast Duke-KU, uses the coaches poll rankings. So, at least while we're watching the game, there's a good chance it will be #1 vs #2.

A couple of AP Poll notes regarding Duke at #1:

8th time as Pre-Season AP #1 (1978-79, 1988-89, 1991-92, 1998-99, 2001-02, 2005-06, 2010-11, 2016-17)
-- (UNC 9, Duke 8, UCLA 8, Kentucky 4, Arizona 3, Indiana 3, Michigan 3)
-- note: first Pre-Season AP Poll was 1961-62

128th Week as AP #1
-- (UCLA 134 weeks, Duke 128 weeks, Kentucky 122 weeks, UNC 110 weeks, Kansas 63 weeks, Indiana 54 weeks)
-- Possibility of over-taking UCLA this season for most all-time weeks at #1

20th Season ranked as AP #1
-- (Kentucky 22 seasons, Duke 20 seasons, UNC 20 seasons, UCLA 17 seasons, Kansas 14 seasons, Indiana 8 seasons)

The six "Blue Bloods" are all ranked in the 2016-17 Pre-Season AP Top 25 (Duke #1, Kentucky #2, Kansas #3, UNC #6, Indiana #11, UCLA #16)
-- All six have been ranked in the same poll 87 times out of a possible 1127 polls (7.72%)
-- There has only been one AP Poll ever that none of these six schools was ranked: DEC 19, 1961
-- note: from 1/20/1949 through 12/27/1960, the AP ranked a Top 20; from 1/3/1961 through 3/12/1968, a Top 10; from Pre-Season 1968 through 3/14/1989, a Top 20; and from Pre-Season 1990 through Current, a Top 25

KY definitely shouldn't be ahead of Kansas. In fact, an argument should be made depending on voting criteria that they should be ahead of Duke as well (though I think Duke will be significantly better by March, Kansas MAY have the edge out of the gate).

Also - how is NOVA top 3/4? I'm assuming it's 99% based on the fact that they won the title and return some nice perimeter pieces. That said - where is the rebounding and interior D required to be a top 5 team going to come from? They're a "doughnut" team for me - amazing around the outside but totally empty in the middle. I'd compare them to your guys last season, except imagine there's no Plumlee...... yikes. I'm sure they'll beat up on the BE though, and they'll have their chance to show us how good they can be when we face off in Philly in January.

after reading the front page article on the preseason AP poll:

I didn't want to start a new thread, but I think this links to the AP preseason poll.

Sports Illustrated, which claims to have the most accurate preseason poll has its list out:

SI’S MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL SWEET 16 PREDICTIONS:
1. Duke; 2. Kansas; 3. Kentucky; 4. Oregon; 5. Villanova; 6. North Carolina; 7. Virginia; 8. Wisconsin; 9. Gonzaga; 10. Arizona; 11. Purdue; 12. Xavier; 13. Louisville; 14. Indiana; 15. Syracuse; 16. UCLA

Despite their inflated claims, they haven't hit the champions in a while -- they picked UNC last year and Kentucky the year before. Not sure who they picked in 2014 (Kansas?), but it sure wasn't UConn. And I knew they didn't pick Louisville in 2013. They might have gotten Kentucky in 2012, but I know they didn't pick Duke in '10 or UConn in '11.

So -- at best (not sure who they picked in '12) -- they've been right once this decade.

Which article is this? The one that ranks each team from 1-351?

Yes, they're the same rankings. Luke Winn basically is in charge of college basketball content for SI, so his rankings will be the magazine's rankings.

Here's the SI cover:

Is this "THE" SI cover or one of four, which has been its recent pattern for the hoops issue?

SI makes no mention of the cover being regional here (http://www.si.com/college-basketball/2016/11/01/oregon-chris-boucher-sports-illustrated-cover). But maybe they'll roll out the rest of the covers in the coming days.

Just know, if we are on any regional cover -- it's over.

The print issue shows the other covers, if there are any, on the inside in miniature form. I think Grayson deserves a cover.
