ESPN has a cool documentary out on the Bennett brothers, Michael and Martellus who are both in the NFL. The Duke connection: apparently Martellus was quite the HS baller and was thinking of jumping straight to the NBA from HS. In this clip (http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=17781726)they briefly mention the other brother, Michael, hanging up on Coach K b/c he didn't believe it was actually him calling to recruit Martellus. Cool story.

I dug around and Bennett was a top 100 project, arguably higher, in the 2005 class (McBob's). He was 81 in the RSC (https://sites.google.com/site/rscihoops/home/2005-final)I, although most services didn't rank him, probably b/c he was thought of as a football prospect. One site had him as high as 21, and scout.com has him oddly listed in their 2005 rankings page in the 20s (http://www.scout.com/college/basketball/recruiting/2005-basketball-prospects), although his offical number is "not ranked." Jimmy Graham is also in the #2 spot, despite being ranked in the 90s, so I'm not sure how to read that page...either way, it appears he was a very good HS bball prospect.

I've only seen about 10-15 mins worth of the whole 60 min piece, but it was pretty entertaining. They are unfiltered, speak their mind, and are candid about a number of subjects. I found it pretty interesting...

I remember when Duke was recruiting Martellus Bennett. It was presumed that if he wanted to play basketball, he would likely come here (and perhaps play some football on the side). But, he chose football and went to Texas A&M instead.

Actually, what happened is that Ted Roof, who was hitting Texas hard that year, really, REALLY wanted Bennett bad. He was having his greatest recruiting year and had already gotten one five-star prospect out of Texas ... and Vince Oghobaase was trying to help recruit Bennett. Roof knew that Bennett was also interested in basketball, so he tried to get Coach K to help him. The idea is that Duke would recruit Bennett with the idea that he could play football and basketball at Duke (as D Bryant did ... and Reggie Love did ... both in that era).

For K, it was a free prospect -- a player who signs a scholarship and plays football and something else counts only against the football limit (if he plays basketball and anything other than football, he counts against the basketball limit).

I had not heard the hang-up story in this case, but I've heard it happen in several other instances. Apparently more than a few young guys can't believe K is calling them.

Every time I see a 919 area code I figure Coach K is finally calling to ask me how to handle a situation with the team.

If he's reading this, call me!:p
