Thank you, Wheat, that's a great article. Contrasting metrics to the NBA really drives home areas where college hoops would be better entertainment - especially if free throws per possession could be lower: it's almost 50% higher than the NBA. Nice to see SI mention Duke a couple times without going negative!

I found this comment particularly interesting...

" But the pick-and-roll boom in the NBA—as well as the realization that iso possessions tend to be inefficient—has led to a decline in iso popularity"

My first thought was, good. I've never been a fan of iso stuff, takes away the team aspect of the game I like.

Thanks, Wheat.

Like Luke, I was a skeptic of the shorter shot clock. It worked out well though, no complaints.

Re: Duke going from strict m-2-m to more zone: it has a lot more to do with the trend towards ones and dones than the shot clock. You just don't have as many folks around long enough these days to truly develop consistent seemless m-2-m.

The test will be whether pace and efficiency can stay up even as free throws/fouls called per possession come down -- i.e., as Winn notes, whether teams really are fouling less b/c of the FOM rules changes or the officials are just dropping back to calling the same fouls they've always called (and not calling the ones the FOM focus was aimed at cutting down on).

From my own very 35,000 foot, gross observational, level, it looked to me last year like the officials were continuing to enforce the FOM initiatives on hand-checking on the perimeter and contact on post players with the ball, and that defensive players have started to adjust in those situations by fouling less.

What I'm not a keen enough observer to notice is whether the officials have continued to police things as diligently for guys moving without the ball (e.g., chucking and bumping cutters).

If the refs are true to this video, physical post play and rebounding that are against the rules will get cleaned up finally.

Is tripping still frowned upon? Asking for a friend.

This was extremely helpful Trouble! Many sporks for you! I actually agreed with all of the rules changes and points of emphasis. Very informative. Let's hope officials are consistent in calling the new rules!

One that jumped out at me was the secondary defender defending inside the charge/block arc. If they stay vertical and jump in an attempt to block the shot, it will not be a defensive foul no matter how much contact there is. However, if they stand there and do not jump, even if they remain vertical it will be a defensive foul if there is contact with the offensive player. Love it. As much as I love K and Duke I have always hated watching a 7'0 footer secondary defender trying to "draw a charge" on a fricking peep squeak guard driving to the hoop. Rise up, be a man, and block the dang shot. If a 6'11/7'0 footer cant block the shot of a 6'1 guy driving to the hoop then he should lose his manhood credentials. It has always driven me nuts even though our bigs over the years were following K's instruction to a T. I watched K coach it in one of the open practices long ago. But those were the days when charges were called a lot and officials would call a foul almost every time if the big tried the block the shot and there was any contact.

On a silly note, I could not help but laugh that the two times they used one of the uncCheats game plays, in both cases it was a case where the foul should have been or was called against their opponent. Really NCAA? Why are they even in the stinking video at all? geez wheeze louise!
