Haven't been to Asheville in a long time (what's wrong with me???) but taking the family in October and would love suggestions on great things to do (in addition to Biltmore). We have two kids in elementary school, so looking for good family fun... outdoors, best family hiking spots, etc. And any good family restaurant recommendations would be awesome. I'm pretty sure we're have to hit Hi-Wire brewery at some point!

Thanks in advance everyone!

I'm sure you'll get lots of good suggestions from the locals on DBR. Vortex Doughnuts and Burial Beer are an awesome combo, IMO. And Grove Park Inn is worth a visit, too.

Holy Shamoly, how much time do you have? Myself and others here could fill about three weeks of activities for you. As far as "outdoors" goes, well, I run a little camping store in town. Drop me a PM and I will be happy to offer your lengthy advice. Here's a list (http://www.crazyfamilyadventure.com/kid-friendly-breweries-in-asheville-north-carolina/) of kid friendly breweries in town, and if you are beercentric there's no shortage of places to visit.

October should be a great time to visit. If your trip doesn't overlap with my Ocracoke trip, I'd be happy to offer you advice in person and perhaps raise a glass.

Drink lots of local beer, there is plenty of it.

Cruise up the Blue Ridge Parkway to Craggy Gardens (https://www.romanticasheville.com/Craggy.htm) and Mount Mitchell (http://www.ncparks.gov/mount-mitchell-state-park) (about 30 and 45 minutes from downtown Asheville). Craggy is a great place for a picnic and easy hike. Mitchell is the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. Excellent views!

Downtown is always fun. Lots of buskers and museums.

Lots of great breakfast places. Skip Tupelo Honey - it isn't what it once was. Instead, try Sunny Point (https://www.yelp.com/biz/sunny-point-caf%C3%A9-asheville) (prepare to have a long wait), Biscuit Head (https://www.yelp.com/biz/biscuit-head-asheville-2), or Homegrown (https://www.yelp.com/biz/homegrown-asheville). King Daddy's (https://www.yelp.com/biz/king-daddys-chicken-and-waffles-asheville) and Early Girl (https://www.yelp.com/biz/early-girl-eatery-asheville) are also nice options. If you like doughnuts, you HAVE to check out Hole (https://www.yelp.com/biz/hole-hot-doughnuts-and-fresh-coffee-asheville). Best doughnuts I have ever had. Just trust me.

Hope this helps. Feel free to PM me if you need more suggestions!

I was there for the Beer City Cup soccer tourney last week. We rented a house in the local hills with wonderful views. Fantastic sunrises and sunsets. Very relaxing!

Your first stop should be ricks68's beer fridge. He needs a lot of help there. ;)

I'll let the locals offer much better suggestions than I ever could but you'll run out of time before you run out of breweries in downtown Asheville. :o

Besides enjoying an all day drive on the parkway, my girlfriend and my favorite time we had we went over Memorial Day was taking in a movie at Asheville Brewing's theater. (Only one movie to choose from, we got Batman Vs. Superman). Great way to spend a night together, with kids too.

Depending on your family's wishes, I might suggest going SOUTH on the BRP. The hike to the top of Mt Pisgah is reasonably easy, with great views, and there is a restaurant nearby at the Pisgah Inn. A bit further south is Devil's Courthouse, which has some spectacular views for a short, but steep, hike to the top.

If you go north, Crabtree Meadows has a nice waterfall ( = lunch spot?) to hike to and Linville Falls is nice (except for the crowds!). I might skip Craggy as it is primarily a late spring (rhodo-) stop. Mt. Mitchell is so-so but a separate drive from the BRP. The views can be good, and the major trails are. . .paved! Also may be crowded.

One caveat: Remember the maximum speed limit on the BRP is 45 mph, and with (weekend/fall) traffic you won't even approach that. Getting from point A to point B can take some time!

I can't offer any comments on watering holes in the area. . .it's been several years since I was there. If you decide to visit the Biltmore House and/or the Grove Park Inn. . .bring plenty of coinage!

Enjoy your trip!

Ok guys. You are all correct.😊
Still don't have time to put in my 2 cents worth, but all the suggestions have been good, including the pinball museum. (It is now booked well in advance and has expanded, so check on availability now if you want to go.) Later.

I have a related question. My 12 year old daughter and I will be making our yearly trip to Camp Rockmont (just outside of Asheville). The rest of our Y-Guides tribe won't be joining us this year so on Friday night (after rafting during the day), we'll be on our own for dinner. Anyone have a good dinner suggestion? We usually eat downtown and walk around a bit (although we aren't usually by ourselves).

Hiking? Several options. Bent Creek (http://srs.fs.usda.gov/bentcreek/) and The Arboretum right next to it. Bent Creek Experimental Forest (http://www.hikewnc.info/trailheads/bent-creek/) has a parking fee but you can park outside the park and walk in. Watch out for bikers. They tend to fly through some of the trails and the little ones could get run over.

The Arboretum (http://www.ncarboretum.org/) charges by the vehicle iirc. http://www.ncarboretum.org/ Many things for the children and you to explore. Right off of the parkway too!

Drive north up the parkway to the Folk Arts Center (http://www.southernhighlandguild.org/folk-art-center). Spend about an hour or less checking it out. Drive further north to access many hiking opportunities.

About 30 minute drive to Mt. Mitchell State Park (http://www.ncparks.gov/mount-mitchell-state-park/trails). I'm not sure you'd want to take the kids on some of those trails but there is a nice hike from the store/education center to the top where you can see for miles around and take some cook pics with the kids. Mine loved it.

October is getting to be cool so I'm not sure if you'd want to go rafting. You can rent a kayak or something and float the French Broad. I've used these folks (http://frenchbroadoutfitters.com/) and the cost is very reasonable.

If you venture south to Dupont State Park (http://www.dupontforest.com/). You'll find Hooker falls (http://www.dupontforest.com/explore/hooker-falls/) just a short hike from one of the parking areas. A longer hike will take you to Triple Falls (http://www.dupontforest.com/explore/triple-falls/). You and the kids will really enjoy. Watch your step and the kids while you're up there (or on any hike for that matter). Seriously. Too many folks come here and end up hurt or dead.

The Davidson River is to the west of Dupont. You'll find one of the trout hatcheries (http://www.ncwildlife.org/Fishing/Hatcheries-Stocking/NCWRC-Hatcheries/Coldwater-Hatcheries#pisgah) there along with the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education Center (http://www.ncwildlife.org/Learning/Education-Centers/Pisgah) (with mini-aquariums) and short trail system with lots of educational materials on the trail. There are "animals" throughout the hike that the kids will get to spot. Bring some quarters to buy some trout chow and you can feed the trout. Bring a fly rod (and purchase a license) and fish one of the best Single Hook Artificial / Catch & Release (http://www.ncwildlife.org/Portals/0/Fishing/documents/Trout-Sign-Document.pdf) river sections around. Further down the river there is a no regulations stretch of river with lots of trout, campgrounds, a forestry education center, etc. The Davidson is a great tub river but that time of year would tend to be too cold. There is a trail along (http://www.hikewnc.info/trailheads/davidson-river/) the river that is beautiful, relatively safe and close to amenities.

Dining? Try Chestnut (http://www.chestnutasheville.com/) if you're downtown. Exceptional, made from scratch. You'll pay for it but it is worth it. Try the charcuterie.

Like Barbeque? Try Moe's Original (http://www.moesoriginalbbq.com/lo/asheville/) down in Biltmore Village after you've been to the Estate. Voted Best wings several years running. Just down from my house and I eat there often.

The Lobster Trap has many good reviews but I've not ventured there.

Papas & Beer is an outstanding Mexican restaurant. I've eaten there so many times I can't recall the number but I have never had a bad meal there. Don't be surprised if you have eaten all you can and there is still food left on your plate. It is great!

Are you into sushi? Some of the best around can be found in Asheville.

I'll stop there because I could go on and on about the dining opportunities. One thing you won't hear about is the local food truck scene. Search for Asheville Food Trucks and you'll see a page dedicated to getting the schedule out for where these trucks will be. There is even a FB page for it.

That's a good question. I'm pretty open but she's a little picky. Frankly, even though she's in middle school, she still usually eats off the kids menu. So first, nothing upscale or fancy. We'll we wearing shorts, t-shirts (and/or sweatshirts). I will say that I tend to be more mainstream and meat oriented :-)

I thought about just grabbing pizza at Barley's but it's been so long since I was there that I can't remember if it's appropriate for a 12 year old girl. When I used to visit Asheville more often it was to see a friend who worked/lived at Hannah Flanigans and at the time we were more interested in beer than food.

I think CB&B upthread suggested Asheville Beer (and Pizza) Company. With a $3 movie. They might not have their award-winning Ninjabreadman Porter (or any variants) brewed yet but their regular porter and IPA are mighty tasty, too.

Their location on Merriman Avenue is very kid friendly and has a game room with air hockey, pop a shot, and video games.

As noted, their beer is on point.

Moe's, Pappa's great for kids. IMHO Chestnuts too upscale. I'd add Farmburger, 12 Bones (lunch only), Homegrown, Buxton Hall, Mello Mushroom (really, really cool decor and great pizzas). There are certainly many more that can be added. Also, for Asheville, your clothing description fits right in. Just add a lot of tattoos and everyone will think you are a local. Oh, and definitely do not bother to shave, either.😄 Welcome to Asheville and be what you want to be.

For downtown I would suggest Farmburger (also has incredible ground chicken burgers), Mello Mushroom, and adding Carmel ' s now. Check them out on the net. All 3 wonderful for people watching while eating. You can also add Salsa's next to Farmburger. Do not plan to eat too late, because some restaurants close around 9 even if they publicize later. Really. By the way, ALL breweries allow kids until around 8 or so I'm pretty sure. Check on that. They may or may not have food for them, however. You should stop by the Visitors Center barely north of downtown if you can to pick up a great restaurant guide. It's pretty accurate for food styles. There are dozens and dozens of good restaurants listed. TripAdvisor is not accurate in their listings, IMHO, so I would avoid it. Hope this is also helpful for DrRR. Oh, Barley's still has very good pizza by the slice.

Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions. I think there are enough good ideas here that'll allow me to see what we are feeling like that day and go find something good. I see burgers, pizza, mexican, beer, and more (all good stuff). Asheville is a great place to walk around and people watch, there's just a little bit of everything to see.

I think CB&B upthread suggested Asheville Beer (and Pizza) Company. With a $3 movie. They might not have their award-winning Ninjabreadman Porter (or any variants) brewed yet but their regular porter and IPA are mighty tasty, too.

Although the beer isn't the focus of this trip, I can say that I'm sure to have a pint or two with dinner (and more once I get back to camp because sleeping in a tent without a few pints isn't a good idea).

Sadly, Hannah's is gone. :( was the bestimate place for outdoor drinks downtown

My friend managed, partly owned and sometimes lived at Hannah's (literally, lived in the basement) once upon a time. I had some great times there (or at least I kinda remember some great times...I have some times there that I don't remember)!

I would also double-check on the rafting. Many local guides shut down after Labor Day.

The rafting is a group deal done through the Y-Guides program. This'll be our 4th year going. I know we've done the French Broad river a few times and did something different last year. We have bus loads of dads and kids, etc so I suspect they may just shut down once these trips are through.

Next year, I'd like to bring the family and raft on our own. I suspect I should contact you and ask advice if I can talk the wife into it.

As I said up top, my GF loved Asheville Brewing's "brew n view" experience. The pizza was amazing, the beer (which was for me) was top notch, and while the movie wouldn't have been my first or second choice, it was so fun that I didn't care. The movie itself is like two or three bucks, so you can't top that for a cheap date. Walk in, order your food, and you sit in a very comfy seat with a big table in front of you. They even have candles so you can see what you are eating while you watch. :)

ABC has a number of new different brews on tap that I think are excellent. Saw a great movie there last week for 3 bucks, also. Unfortunately, their pizzas have come down significantly in the past year IMO. Harris Teeter has great inexpensive pizzas now that you can get with lots of different toppings at no extra charge. Great crust, too. Much better than ABC. ABC does have other stuff that is pretty good, however. I Usually get their chicken tenders or other Italian stuff. Also, their tater tots are pretty mushy, however.

As someone who visits that establishment once or twice a week, their food can be hit and miss. Their wings are reliable, and I love the pizza with Gorgonzola and walnuts (I add sausage).

Also, decent burger, good fish and chips.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. We packed in a lot of Asheville in a short time. And wow, I had kinda forgotten how awesome and beautiful it was up there. Highlights included hiking the Linville Gorge trails, hitting up Farm Burger, Corner Kitchen and Hole, and drinking a bunch of great micro brews. And the wife and I added a strong candidate to the "places to live when the kids move out" list.

Hey guys,

Bumping this thread for an upcoming Memorial Day trip. Staying overnight in Asheville on Thursday night and was planning on visiting the Sierra Nevada brewery for dinner, then finding something to do after that. Staying at an air B & B with 4 teenagers and a 10 year old!

We plan to spend the day Friday driving the BRP up to Gatlinburg and we're looking for good/easy waterfalls to stop off and hike, or swimming holes t since it's supposed to be hot that are maybe off the beaten path and not so crowded.

Any suggestions for that and/or breakfast in/near Asheville Friday morning before starting our trek.

As for breakfast, Biscuit Head is always a winner. There are now three locations ( the OG location in West Asheville, Biltmore Ave near downtown and now South Asheville off Hendersonville Rd - close to where I live). Usually a long line at each location, but it moves quickly.

If you want the absolute best, go to Sunny Point, but only if you don't mind waiting 1 hr+. Feel free to PM me if you need more info.

Have fun!

Pisgah Slides, aka Sliding Rock (https://www.pisgahhospitalitypartners.com/sliding-rock/), are fun! Cold and wet, too!

That's on the list of maybes. I was worried about being able to find parking from what I read online.

Best breakfast in town. Pretty dang good lunch too. Sort of "new southern cuisine."

Yep.

The breakfast burrito and huevos rancheros are my favorites. I'm not a shrimp fan, but their shrimp and grits have won several awards.

If you acquire thirst, there *might* be a few breweries on (in?) the South Slope area that could assist with the quenching...

At Sierra Nevada at the moment. Not particularly my cup of tea, but definitely a "destination." Excellent food, and you probably already know their beer. It is awash with tourists, but so are most places downtown. If you've never been to a Serious Brewery, it's worth a stop.

We actually ended up cooking breakfast at our cabin to save time. Had a full day of hiking/waterfalls on the agenda so we decided to eat early and get out there.

We did make it to Seirra Nevada the night before for dinner. The kids loved it, and so did dad. 😁 We spent a few hours there eating, drinking and playing bocci ball with the kids.

I had the hazey little thing ipa. Tasty.

I will be interested. Met some folks who work nationally for that company. Looks rather amazing.

I think we got there too late. We did a self guided tour, but lots of areas weren't accessible. I think they close the tour to degenerates like me. 😁
