The coaching carousel is spinning. The big news of course is that Brown's Lars Tiffany is the new head coach at UVa. Loyola assistant Ryan Moran is taking over at UMBC. Former Duke assistant John Galloway has been named head coach at Jacksonville.

Haven't seen confirmation anywhere else, but collegecrosse.com reported this morning that Villanova midfielder Sean Cerrone is transferring to Duke. The rising junior from Huntington, NY had a superb freshman season in 2015, scoring 24 goals, adding 12 assists, and being named second-team all-Big East. His playing time diminished in 2016, but he still managed to put up seven and 14. Barring injury or loss of form, he will be a welcome addition to a unit that was decimated by graduation; his 57 career points are more than all of Duke's returning mids combined. Welcome to Duke, Sean.

Interesting--can he play right away, or does lacrosse have a sit-out-a-year rule?

Yes as long as the old school agrees.

One-Time Transfer Exception

The most common transfer exception available to student-athletes is the one-time transfer exception, which applies to NCAA Divisions I and II. The one-time transfer exception has a number of requirements, but one of the most important is getting a release from an athlete’s current school.

The one-time transfer exception is available to all student-athletes in Division II and all student-athletes in Division I except for athletes in football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, and men’s ice hockey. Once a student-athlete graduates in those sports however, they are allowed to use the one-time transfer exception.

The exception requires that the current school state in writing that it has no objection to the student-athlete using the exception. The way this normally takes place is that after a student-athlete has selected a transfer destination, the compliance office at the new school will send a form commonly called a tracer to the old school. Included on that form will be a space where the old school indicates whether it has an objection.

With the world championship just over a year away, five current and former Duke players have been invited to the first stage of the selection process for the 2016-17 women's national team.

Congrats to Sarah Bullard '11, who will be trying to make it to her third WC, and current Blue Devils Maddie Crutchfield, Kyra Harney, Maura Schwitter, and Olivia Jenner.

Duke continues to help other schools in the state start lacrosse programs. Amanda Barnes will be the first coach at East Carolina. Let's try not to lose to them in a few years though.

Mike Daly, who lead Tufts to three NCAA division 3 championships in recent years, is the new head coach at Brown.

Seven Duke incoming freshmen will be on display in today's Under Armour All-American games. For the first time, ESPNU will show both the boys' and girls' games, starting with the girls at 5:30 p.m. Eastern; the boys will face off at 8:00 p.m.

Attackman Reilly Walsh (Bronxville, NY/Brunswick School), midfielder Brian Smyth (West Hartford, CT/Westminster), and defenseman/LSM J.T. Giles-Harris (Nyack, NY/St. Joseph Regional) will play for the North boys, while midfielder Kevin Quigley (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) will go for the South. Midefielder Terry Lindsey (Chevy Chase, MD/Georgetown Prep) is one of several players who will not be playing because of U-19 national team commitments.

On the girls side, attacker Sam DeBellis (Cold Spring Harbor, NY/Cold Spring Harbor) suits up for the North; midfielder Catherine Cordrey (Summit, NJ/Summit) and goaltender Gabbe Cadoux (Ellicott City, MD/McDonough) will play for the South.

The men's U-19 world championships open tonight in Coquitlam, BC, with the US playing Canada at 10:30 p.m. Eastern.

The US team has never failed to bring home gold, but they are likely to be severely challenged by Canada and the Iroquois.

Duke sophomore Brad Smith and incoming freshman Terry Lindsey will run on the midfield for the US team.

Preview, schedule, and link to streaming video (alas, not free) here.

The USA has looked good in its first two pool games at the U-19 world championships, beating Canada 12-5 and Australia 13-4. The close D, led by Hugh Crance of ND and Jack Rowlett of UNC, has been superb.

Brad Smith has been outstanding in a role that can best be described as "Swiss Army knife." He runs on offensive units with just about everybody (but most often with Ryan Conrad and Dox Aitken on what looks like the de facto first unit), plays on the EMO, and takes a wing on faceoffs. He had the goal that effectively put Canada away, opening the fourth quarter with a nasty rip on the run from the right alley.

Terry Lindsey has settled into the SSDM rotation with Austin Sims (Princeton) and Matt Costabile (ND), and looked increasingly confident as the Australia game went on.

The USA can cement its position as the gold medal favorite with a win over Iroquois tonight at 10:30 Eastern. Hopefully the lights will work tonight (lighting issues foreced a long delay and two foeld changes during last night's Canafa - Iroquois game, won by Canada, 12-9).

Could the Utes be the next D1 program? Something is happening, although there has been no announcement yet. College Crosse has the details.

This could be a huge domino-flipper. BYU, Colorado and Colorado State are long-time MCLA powers, and the prospect of a six-team Rocky Mountain league with a AQ could be enough to move them. The huge early success of the USC women (who came within one goal of a Final Four appearance in year four) definitely got the attention of Pac-12 ADs. The prospect of the ACC losing its AQ to the new league will put enormous pressure on BC, GT, and VaTech to step up. And if there are 11 leagues with AQs, a field expansion becomes almost inevitable.

The USA finished pool play unbeaten, beating the Iroquois 17-3 on Monday night and England 19-6 today.

The Iroquois came out strong; they led 2-0 and 3-1 early, and had a chance to do a lot more damage when Jack Rowlett took a three-minute, non-releasable penalty. However, an attemped skip-pass was picked off, the USA was able to kill the penalty, and then a house fell on the Iroqouis, to the tune of 16 unanswered goals over a 62-minute span. The US faceoff unit, led by Maryland's Austin Henningsen, went 20-for-23. Brad Smith had three assists.

The USA started slowly against England; it was 2-2 after one quarter. But once they got rolling, England had no answer. Brad Smith contributed a goal and an assist.

The USA has a bye into the semifinals (and a day off on Wednesday); they will play either the loser of tonight's Iroquois - Australia game or Israel at 4:30 p.m. Pacific on Thursday.

Utah is being coy about the timeline, but the only logical explanation for the moves announced today is that there is a firm commitment to go D1 sometime soon.

UNC assistant Brian Holman is the Utes' new head coach, and he is bringing in son Marcus and fellow MLL all-star Will Manny as co-offensive co-ordinators. A defensive co-ordinator and a S&C coach will be hired in short order.

IL got a copy of the message that was sent to players and parents.

USA cruises into the championship game of the U-19 world championships with a 23-1 demolition of Australia. A goal and an assist for Brad Smith; Terry Lindsey credited with 3 GBs (and a 30 second penalty).

USA will play the winner of tonight's second semi between Canada and Iroquois at 7:00 Eastern on Saturday.

USA comes back from a six-goal halftime deficit to win the U-19 world championship, 13-12 over Canada. Ryan Conrad (UVa) scores the winner with :08 to go. Austin Henningsen (Maryland) fueled the comeback by going 15-for-25 on faceoffs.

Brad Smith finished the tournament with seven points on two goals and five assists. Terry Lindsey got better as the tournament went on; he was arguably the best of the US SSDM crew in the final.

Brad and Terry join Kyle Turri, Kyle Keenan, C.J. Costabile, Matt Danowski, and Kevin Cassese as Duke U-19 gold medalists.

Well done, fellas.

Welcome to Duke, Lars Keil. The Brown men's assistant coach has been named as assistant coach for the Duke women's team, filling the slot vacated by Amanda Barnes.

Congrats to former Duke star attackman Josh Dionne, who moves from Navy to UNC as assistant coach. He replaces Katrina Dowd, who left the Heels to become head coach at Oregon.

The first season of the women's pro league wrapped up last weekend. Long Island, led by national team stalwart Devon Wills, beat Boston for the title. Sarah Bullard and Maddy Acton, both with Boston, were the only Duke alums to see action this season.
