We made it!

Yay! It's a rematch of men's basketball against UNC-Wilmington. In Columbia with South Carolina and Rhode Island on the other side

Interesting that we ended both 55 year futility streaks in same school year. Won a bowl game and made the baseball tourney.

Wow ... this is astonishing stuff. I was told at the ACC Tournament that the ACC and SEC were likely to get nine No. 1 subregional seeds between them -- they got 13 of the 16!

The ACC was hoping for four host sites ... they got six. The SEC was hoping for five ... they got seven.

That bodes well for Duke's chances of making the field (announcement in about 15 minutes from now).

PS And NC State DID get to post, so the fears that they would be sent west or screwed by the HB2 controversy proven groundless.

I was hoping Duke might get shipped to Fullerton ... Oh well. Big West and Pac 12 both way down this season.

Perfect day -- Duke gets in ... and the Cheaters are left out!

10 ACC teams make the field -- it just happened to be the 10 teams that qualified for the ACC Tournament. I noticed that Washington got an at-large bid with an RPI of 55 ... that must kill the Cheats with their No. 20 RPI.

Amazing dominance by the ACC and SEC -- a combined 7 of the top 8 seeds and 13 of the 16 subregional No. 1 seeds.

Duke has a chance, thanks to the NCAA format. The Devils have three solid starting pitchers and you can win a subregional by winning three games. The four teams play a double elimination format ... win three straight games and you win the subregional. Lose one and you have to go to a fourth starter and that could be trouble for Duke.

Duke vs. UNC-Wilmington is likely to be Friday ... Saturday brings either a winner's bracket game with the South Carolina/Rhode Island winner or a loser's bracket game with the SC/RI loser.

Duke got a pretty fair draw. In fact, all the non-hosting ACC schools got decent draws. Both Duke and Wake are three seeds despite having better RPIs than the two seeds.

Selection committee didn't do the Wuffies any favors. Coastal should be hosting (RPI of 12), and Navy can really pitch.

Biggest snubs? Arguably Michigan (RPI of 38) and Oregon State (43).

Well, there is a team at No. 19 in the RPI that was snubbed.

Who could that be?

Also interesting, my neighbor's stepfather is the common demonimator. Don Altman was QB and pitcher 55 years ago.

Raise a glass to him!

Altman was second-team All-ACC in football (second to Roman Gabriel at QB) and second-team All-ACC as a pitcher for the baseball team -- which not only made the NCAA, but reached the College World Series.

Found this story in the SI vault about Altman's role in Duke's 1961 Cotton Bowl victory:

The 1961 Cotton Bowl victory came against Arkansas and Lance Alworth (Bambi), if I remember correctly. Mr. Moorman was a big contributor as was Altman. Going strictly on memory which is what it used to be. GoDuke!

I would argue that that was self-inflicted. No matter how good your overall record and RPI, you can't miss a ten-team conference tournament and expect to get in. And they were 5-10 in the second half of ACC play.

What would Bo Ryan think of Duke's three scheduled starters for this weekend -- two are rent-a-players from Cornell.

11-1 final. Very sad. Anyone know why we started our "Sunday" pitcher. Embarrassing performance today.

At least it's double elimination? Looking for the silver lining. Only counts as one. We'll get 'em tomorrow.

McAfee has been Duke's most effective starter this season. He saved a number of series as a Sunday starter.

He also started an NCAA Tournament game earlier in his career at Cornell.

Obviously, it wasn't his day.

But the decision to start him was sound.

Duke gets the loser of South Carolina-Rhode Island (7 pm start tonight) in Saturday's loser's bracket game at noon.

Win that and the Devils play another game noon Sunday ... lose tomorrow and it's over.

McAfee is technically the second starter after Clark left the rotation. We just decided to slot Urbon into Clark's spot in the rotation for the rest of the regular season.

Interestingly, looking at some draft prospect rankings, he is ahead of Swart. If only Swart and Matuella were healthy in 2015. Trent could be an insightful pick for someone after a nice season.

Remember when certain former coaches always pitched our ace on Saturday to try to steal conference wins? I am glad to see that we have left those days.
