Based on twitter reports, it was very much a celebration of Marshall and his family.

Derryck attended. Good for him.

I'm sure there are DBR posters who were there who will want to write things up in a post, all nice and orderly.

For those who are impatient, I would check out the twitter feeds of beat reporters:

Laura Keeley (https://twitter.com/laurakeeley)

Stephen Schramm (https://twitter.com/stephenschramm)

Steve Wiseman (https://twitter.com/stevewisemannc)

A bit surprised. Wonder what the reaction was. Strange.

Why is it strange? He was part of the team and from what I've read he enjoyed being part of it.

And he's leaving...not putting him down, but must have been strange for all involved. Especially after his "uncle's" comments. Just my opinion.

I think most people around the team can understand the position that Derryck is in. He is still attending classes and finishing the semester. I like the fact that he wanted to attend.

Note, however, that only his mother and not his father attended.

Yeah, I agree. I also appreciate that Derryck is finishing the semester and got a kick out of Bill Self needing to come to Durham in order to meet with him.

According to the tweets he got lots of hugs and received some praise from the coaching staff. Sounds like a nice evening all around.

Just confirming my love for this team:

"And it was at that moment that Justin Robinson—J-Rob swag—walked into my room. And this son of a gun, for lack of a better word—I had to write son of a gun so I didn’t use the expletive I wanted to use. This son of a gun—I shot him the meanest look. Every part of my body language was saying get the hell out of my room. A blind person could have seen that I didn’t want anyone in the room. But this guy ignored it all and came and sat next to me and watched TV for hours.

"He didn’t want me to be alone," Plumlee said, choking back tears. "He didn’t want me to wallow in my self-pity. He cared enough to not do what I wanted, but to do what I needed."

Very touching story. The banquet photo seems to show evidence of Justin's growth since the end of the season. Where are the cinder blocks when you really need them?

This is a great look! Handsome is as handsome does.

Question for attendees, how did K look as he walked? Good knee progress?

Coach K walked well. He didn't use a cane or walker. He limped slightly. He had to be slow and careful going up the steps to the dais. He stood at the podium to speak for several minutes at a time. There were a couple of chairs on the dais, put there in case he needed to sit down, but he didn't. I think we can say he's recovering well.

Are these our new road unis? Don't see the Nike swoosh anywhere.

The NCAA was worried about bagels with peanut butter for athletes, don't matching suits raise an eyebrow?

I'm shocked that Thornton attended the banquet, honestly. I don't recall in prior years hearing that guys who are about to transfer choose to go through with that.

I admire the young man for his choice to attend. The banquet is a celebration of the team and year and he was a big part of that team and year. The future will take care of itself. Accept and enjoy what is now before you and then move on. As Clark would say" Well done, young man.

That Thornton and his mom attended the banquet showed a lot of class and courage, I think. Perhaps they wanted to show that the uncle's remarks did not reflect their feelings toward Coach K and Duke. How sad would it be if Derryck didn't want to leave at all?

Well that is pretty much the unofficial word on the street. Derryck doesn't want to leave but his dad wants him to leave.

Hmmm,. Wild thought. Are all bridges burned...blown up...gone? This seems like a silly situation for him...that he doesn't want to happen...just being forced down the path...

Not going to happen now. But these 3 three tweets from Adam Rowe on the day Thornton's transfer was officially announced suggest that the Duke coaches had been trying to get Derryck to stay ever since January when relationships between Duke and Derryck's camp began to go south.

I'm still holding out hope that he'll change his mind. Phil Henderson came back. Apparently no one would take him as a transfer given prior academic probation but he still came back.

Why don't I remember that about Phil? can you remind me of the story there?

it never occurred to me that Derryck might stay. now you've got my hopes up!

Sumner can probably fill in the finer points about the reasons for the transfer and why he asked to return, as I don't want to misrepresent Phil's motives nor his academic record. I'm confident of the basic facts. Phil was going to transfer. I don't know if he officially announced it but it was common knowledge. When he asked Coach K to return, K instead deferred to the team who voted Phil back onto the island.

thanks CameronBlue. that second article was interesting to read. So sad he died so young. As coach K said, he was a gentle soul.

I was surprised as well, but super happy he and his mom both attended. I think that was a very loud statement directly conflicting with the noise uncle bipolar trainor had been spouting off on social media..

Exactly. Well said. That is character in my book. I will forever admire the young man for this move. I hate we are losing him. I felt from Day 1 after seeing him play, Derryck would develop into a very solid 4yr PG for Duke who would do great things by the time he was a Senior much like Quinn. I wish he would have chosen to stay no matter what his dad and uncl "I'm an idiot an don't even know it" trainor, wanted him to do. It's his college career not theirs.

I agree killerleft. Good Post.

I coached youth league basketball for 20 years, some high school, & at some point you would think parents/relatives would not be a problem (especially by college when you are playing for the all time winning coach in NCAA Basketball history) but sadly that is not the case.

Wow.....how could DT and his mom listen to that speech and not realize the opportunity that young man is throwing away?
