Sad news from the Cuse: Dwayne "Pearl" Washington has succumbed to his bout with cancer (http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/15277787/former-syracuse-great-dwayne-pearl-washington-dies) (a brain tumor). He was only 52 years old.

I despise this damn disease.

You are not alone in the despising department.

Condolences to his family and friends and the Syracuse community. The world lost a gem in Pearl. http://nypost.com/2016/03/20/the-kind-soul-of-pearl-washington-in-one-hs-story/

RIP indeed. I was fortunate enough to be at the 1984 Big East Final to see Pearl and Syracuse play Patrick Ewing and Georgetown. Pearl put on an unbelievable show that night. An amazing college talent. So much fun to watch.

When I was in Jr HS I remember going to the Carrier Dome with my dad to watch Pearl.
He put Cuse and the Big East on the college basketball map.
RIP Pearl.

Yup. The Big East was a lot of fun to watch in those days, and Pearl was one of its best. He was really something else back then. RIP.

[As an aside, when I first heard the news, I was remembering back to his pro career, and thinking that drugs had really derailed him. But then I couldn't actually find anything that referred to his drug problems. Until this line from an old NYT article -

"In 1988, a Nets player named Duane Washington was suspended from the N.B.A. for cocaine use, and many have mistakenly believed it was Pearl Washington. But his career ended for other reasons."

So apologies Pearl, for mistakenly attributing that to you.]
