I figure we can keep the Olympic/Team USA stuff in that thread and cover everything else here.

Duke commit Mikayla Boykin was invited to the U17 tryouts:
http://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2016/04/35-accept-invitation-to-usa-womens-u17-trials.aspx

She had to miss the U16s last summer so hopefully she gets to show what she can do and make the team.

The draws for the two U17 World Championships can be found here:
http://www.fiba.com/world/u17/2016/news/draw-results-in-for-fiba-u17-world-championships

Since everyone always likes to hear about which college coaches get recruiting advantages with the U18s/U19s:

Men: Shaka Smart assisted by Kevin Ollie and Mark Turgeon
Women: Suzie McConnell-Serio (Pitt) assisted by Kamie Etheridge (UNC-West) and Charlotte Smith (ex of the other UNC, now head coach at Elon)

The tryouts roster has been named for the USA U18 Girls team:
http://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2016/05/wu18-trials-roster.aspx

For right now, there are no Duke connections.

Plenty of Duke targets for the U17 Boy's tryouts as Don Showalter tries to keep his perfect record in the upcoming World Championships.

In the category of other countries playing more international basketball than the United States, the South American Championship for Women started on Friday on the road to 2018 World Championship for Women qualification. Both this and the men's tournament are being held in Venezuela, which seems like a bad choice in retrospect.

Day 3 recap:
http://www.womensbasketball247.com/2016/05/south-american-championship-day-3-may-22nd/

Three teams have qualified for the 2017 FIBA Americas Championship for Women as Brazil, Argentina, and Venezuela punched tickets. Argentina did so by beating Peru 89-15. Not a misprint. Canada will presumably also take their invitation while the United States will only do so if they do not win Olympic gold.

It is interesting to see the difference in approach by USA Basketball betwen the boys and girls teams at the youngest age group. For the U17 Girl's team, they are again allowing players to apply for open tryouts and they have accepted enough players to make a 150 player group for the initial pool:
http://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2016/05/complete-roster-announced-for-womens-u17-trials.aspx
Roster:
http://www.usab.com/basketball/media/pdfs/2016/2016-rosters/16-wu17-trials-roster---all-alphapdf.aspx

They also do the skills work and provide additional coaching at these tryouts, while the boys' side of things usually does that with an extra camp in the fall:
http://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2016/05/wu17-lead-clinician-and-court-coaches.aspx

The USA U18 Girls were a few players short for tryouts so three more were added:
http://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2016/05/womens-u18-trials-to-feature-30.aspx

They also announced the coaches helping out on the court during that process:
http://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2016/05/wu18-court-coaches.aspx

Coaching willingness to help at the level can lead to a chance to be one of the assistant coaches later.

At the South American Championship for Women, the semifinals are set with Brazil-Argentina and Venezuela-Colombia for some neighbor rivalries. Ecuador-Paraguay is the important game on Wednesday as the winner still has a chance at joining the other four teams for the Americas-wide tournament next year.

Javin already revealed that he would try out for the U18 team when he was invited, but the whole list was made official today:
http://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2016/05/mu18-training-camp-athletes.aspx
http://www.usab.com/mens/u18/roster.aspx

Of course there are also some recruiting targets on there. This team will compete in the FIBA Americas Championship to qualify for next summer's U19 World Championship.

At the South American Championship for Women, Paraguay beats Ecuador to give themselves a chance to qualify for next summer. Brazil and Venezuela won their semifinals.

Mikayla Boykin is now at the tryouts. Best of luck to her as 143 players need to be cut to 12 over the course of the weekend.

In South America, the final ranking of the four teams has been determined as it was no surprise that Brazil won the women's championship again. Venezuela was second and Colombia beat Argentina for third place.

Mikayla survives the first cut down to 101 players.

According to a member of the media attending, the roster might not be fully set at the conclusion of tryouts on Monday morning and will instead be set closer to the tournament.

05-29-2016, 12:43 AM
Mikayla also makes the next cut down to 73:

Mikayla did not make the cut down to 18 for the U17 team:
http://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2016/05/u17-finalists-announced.aspx

They will keep all 18 for a little while before making the final decision.

There will be no Duke representation on the U18 Girls team either as they have settled on a roster:

The long process to decide the U17 Girl's team is finally over:
http://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2016/06/womens-u17-team-named.aspx

A lot of uncommitted players are involved, so who knows if there will be a future Blue Devil?

06-11-2016, 12:40 AM
It is always good to take a look at the court coaches for the youth national teams. That's often a stepping stone to one of the assistant coaching positions and so on up the ladder. It is also a way of seeing some under the radar coaches that may be perceived to be future names by other coaches. The U17 team has an NAIA head coach. Chris Mack is the big name of the U18 bunch with NAIA and JC head coaches also involved.

Lindsey had a big game for Belarus with game highs of 22 points and 6 assists, but they lost 84-70 and missed the chance at quick qualification. Yelena Leuchanka had 19 points and 9 rebounds while ex-WNBA player Chen Nan had 15 points and 7 rebounds in the win. Now they have to win two games in a row, starting with beating Argentina on Saturday to make it to Rio.

The final groups for the Olympics were decided in the women's tournament once the five qualifying tournament teams were drawn into the five vacant spots. Group A has France, Japan, Brazil, Australia, Belarus, and Turkey. Group B is the Canada, Spain, the United States, Senegal, Serbia, and China.

As I always point out, every other country has far more international basketball to contend with just to get to the big tournaments. Today was the first day of the Centrobasket tournament in Panama City, which will help determine the teams in next year's FIBA Americas tournament and more. Mexico and Puerto Rico are in preparation for their Olympic Qualifying Tournaments, so they both brought strong teams as they both play their first games on Saturday.

The tournament started in Group A, as Cuba eased past Nicaragua 96-50. The day closed with the hosts welcoming Antigua and Barbuda, rolling to a 103-48 win. In the win, ex-Texas State player Tony Bishop had 17 points, ex-North Carolina A&T player Ed Jones had 13 points, and ex-Abilene Christian player Jonathan King had 10 points. In the loss, ex-DIII player Joel McIntosh had 11 points.
Boxscores:

http://www.fiba.com/centrobasket/2016/1906/Panama-Antigua#|tab=boxscore_statistics

Group B play started with the second game of the day as both teams were weakened. The US Virgin Islands could only fill nine out of twelve available roster spots, although they were able to call on a roster of current and former collegians. The Bahamas managed to bring in DeAndre Ayton, although the rest of the team was far weaker than usual standards with their most famous player with experience on the team preparing for the draft. They nearly completed a comeback against the more depleted team, but lost 82-74. Ayton had 16 points and 11 rebounds, ex-Stetson player Kentwan Smith had 13 points and 6 rebounds, and Wagner's Michael Carey had 12 points and 8 rebounds. In the win, Khallid Hart of Marist had 18 points, ex-Cornell player Johnathan Gray had 16 points, ex-DII player Georgio Milligan had 12 points and 7 rebounds, and ex-Murray State player Ivan Aska had 11 points and 8 rebounds. In the next game, the Dominican Republic jumped out to a big lead on Costa Rica, winning 80-58. In the win, ex-Kentucky player Eloy Vargas had 15 points and 9 rebounds and ex-DII player Marcos Castrillo had 15 points and 6 rebounds in the loss.

Centrobasket raged on in Panama City. The first game of the day was in Group B as the Bahamas jumped out to a huge lead on Costa Rica and coasted to an 82-58 win. DeAndre Ayton continued to show what he can do with 18 points and 9 rebounds as their fans hope they can put together a full strength team in the future. In the loss, the usual Costa Rican star, ex-Jackson State player Kay Martinez, had 13 points. Mexico made their debut in the third game of the day and got everything that they could handle from the US Virgin Islands, finally prevailing 91-83 in overtime. They were missing their star, but have still have a strong team in advance of Olympic qualifiers and were not as hurt by absences as their opponents, but it was still a shaky start. In the win, ex-Wyoming player Francisco Cruz had 27 points, ex-Fresno State player Hector Hernandez had 23 points and 14 rebounds, and their NBA player, ex-Cal star Jorge Gutierrez, had 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 8 assists. In the loss, ex-Murray State player Ivan Aska had 22 points and ex-DII player Georgio Milligan, ex-Florida player Walter Hodge, and Marist's Khallid Hart had 13 points each.

The hosts were back in action to close the day as Puerto Rico finally got to make their debut, but Panama was too strong for them even as they hold Olympic hopes, building a second half lead to roll 87-64. In the win, ex-Texas State player Tony Bishop had 18 points and 8 rebounds, ex-Texas A&M Corpus Christi player Michael Hicks had 17 points, ex-South Carolina player Chris Warren had 12 points, and ex-LSU player Jaime Lloreda had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Both U17 World Championships will be played in Spain at the same time. The Girl's tournament starts first on Wednesday and the United States faces South Korea at 2:30pm ET. The first round of games for all teams will be on FIBA's YouTube channel.

Centrobasket play started with a game in Group B as Mexico shook off a sluggish start to wallop Costa Rica 78-46 as ex-Montana State player Adrian Zamora led all scorers with 11 points. The third game of the day was expected to be a good one, but the Dominican Republic led wire to wire and beat the Bahamas 87-80 as ex-NAIA player Sadiel Rojas had 11 points. In the loss, ex-NAIA player David Nesbitt had 18 points, ex-NAIA player Leon Cooper had 16 points, and ex-High Point player Tehran Cox had 14 points.

In Group A, Japan recorded the first surprise of the day, building a big halftime lead on Latvia and winning 77-71 as Mai Yamamoto had the performance of the day. Brazil has three players who attend high school and play AAU ball in North Carolina and are all fairly well regarded after beating the United States last year, but they struggled in this game.

Play started in Group D, where South Korea stunned France in overtime 90-84. Jaylen Hoard, who has decided to stop playing in France to attend high school at Wesleyan Christian, had an insane game in the loss, but the trio of Yang Jae-Min, Lee Jung-Hyun, and Shin Min-Suk helped their team over the line as they each played all 45 minutes. The reigning European champions Bosnia and Herzegovina picked up where they left off last summer and jumped on the Dominican Republic early to win 84-59. Hopefully not the swear filter guy. It is not an uncommon last name, but I suppose there are no other words that that one is a part of so I guess it just gets filtered.

I do not follow recruiting that much, but it seems like Carter, Knox, and Trent are the main guys with interest.

The result was not a surprise given the team's loss last summer with a different group of personnel and their general play in the tournament, but the United States U17 Girl's team officially lost their grip on the age group on the world stage with a 73-60 loss to Australia. While they managed to keep the Sapphire's star silent in the second half, they failed to contain Jazmine Shelley and further questions are likely to be raised about the program even though this was considered a fairly deep international pool this year.

Even if there are no global implications, the U20 championships are the most prestigious youth tournaments in Europe and players are always expected to show up. The two women's tournaments started on Saturday. Teams are split into two divisions with the worst teams in Division A getting relegated to next summer's Division B and the top Division B teams getting promoted to next summer's Division A. The lower division is being played in Podgorica, Montenegro while the top teams visit Matosinhos, Portugal. Angela Salvadores is recovering from injury and is not playing for Spain and it looks like they could have used her as they try to defend their title won by a different set of players last year.

The qualification process for the 2018 version of the tournament is well under way as the Caribbean countries determined qualifiers for the 2017 Centrobasket U17 tournaments with their U16 tournaments in Georgetown, Guyana. The Girl's tournament finished on Saturday with the Bahamas beating Suriname. The British Virgin Islands will also join them next summer after beating Antigua and Barbuda 44-38 as players start their dream of perhaps making the 2019 U19 World Championship.

Final Standings:
Bahamas
Suriname
British Virgin Islands
Antigua and Barbuda
Barbados
Trinidad and Tobago
Guyana

The Boy's tournament was played first and the Bahamas beat the hosts 84-57 last Saturday. Jamaica grabbed a spot for next summer as well after beating Barbados 66-58. Both tournaments had their share of countries that have not had much representation at the senior level recently with Dominica being one of the notable teams to put forward a squad at this level.

Jamaica
Barbados
Suriname
Antigua and Barbuda
British Virgin Islands

Another youth championship concluded on Sunday as both divisions of the U20 European Women's Championships finished. The final was quite thrilling as Italy nearly came back to beat Spain before losing to the defending champions and winners of five of the last six tournaments 71-69 in Matosinhos, Portugal. The exciting action was at the bottom of the standings as the last three teams would be sent down to Division B next summer to be replaced by the top three teams in Podgorica, Montenegro. Germany and Slovakia already had their fates sealed with heartbreaking losses on Saturday. Turkey won an emotional 67-65 game over Greece to take the last survival spot with the lucky thirteenth place. The final in Division B was anti-climatic as Slovenia beat Lithuania 62-45 after both teams had done the hard work on Saturday to move up next summer. The game for the last place was also quite intense as Hungary just managed to get past the Czech Republic 50-49. Ireland finished at the bottom, but at least they showed up, which is more than can be said about a number of other countries.

Final Standings:

Division A:
Spain
Italy
Russia
Serbia
Belgium
France
Latvia
Poland
Netherlands
Portugal
Bosnia and Herzegovina
Sweden
Turkey
Greece

While the picture is clearing up for the U19 World Championship next summer with two more continents starting their tournaments on Friday, it became less clear on other fronts. The Division A tournament for Europe was scheduled for Samsun, Turkey in a week, but due to conditions in the country, has been postponed indefinitely. Meanwhile, the Asia U18 tournament started in Tehran, Iran while the Africa U18 tournament started in Kigali, Rwanda.

Eric Boateng has been named in the preliminary squad as Great Britain prepares for qualifiers to next summer's EuroBasket. Ben Gordon is also on the list, which is a surprise, but of course Luol Deng is not.

EuroBasket qualifiers start tomorrow so there is never too long of a break without high level basketball.

The Centrobasket U15 Men's Championship finished with Puerto Rico beating the Dominican Republic 74-67 at home. Mexico also will play at the U16 FIBA Americas tournament next summer after a 100-46 win over Panama.

COCABA, which is contains Central American basketball federations opted to have their two U16 tournaments at the same time in San Jose, Costa Rica. They started on Monday and will run through Friday as teams look to qualify for the two 2017 U17 Centrobasket tournaments. That tournament qualifies teams for the two 2018 FIBA America U18 Championships. Finally, those two will feed into the two 2019 World U19 Championships. A quirky little tournament began play on Friday. FIBA Asia uses localized qualification tournaments based out of a number of small associations between countries to determine who gets to participate in the federation-wide events. In order to determine exactly how many championship berths each area should get, the FIBA Asia Challenge tournament is contested in the summer preceding the FIBA Asia Championship. As FIBA gains greater control over the continental federations, some of these weird methods will be standardized and hopefully more sensible formats will be adopted. The twelve teams arrived in Tehran, Iran and were divided into four groups of three for the first stage. The hosts were one of the few teams to field a virtually full strength roster.

Group D started the tournament as South Korea fought back in the fourth quarter to beat Japan 80-73. Naturalized ex-Gonzaga player Ira Brown had 14 points and 14 rebounds in the loss.
Boxscore:

The hosts took a big lead to start Group C play and eased past Qatar 81-49. There is only one player who has appeared in the NBA in the field and Iran used him to great effect as Hamed Haddadi had 15 points and 8 rebounds.

Now all of the teams will move on to the next round to play three more games. There had been talk that the groups would be mixed together after the first round, but Groups A and B will combine to form Group E and Groups C and D will combine to form Group F. All results will hold from the last round and teams will face the three teams in the group that they did not face in the first round. Why they did not just start with two groups in the first place is a mystery to all, but hopefully FIBA Asia along with some other organizations, continue to get fixed as part of wider FIBA reform. Here is how the groups stand after being combined:
Group E: China 2-0, Taiwan 2-0, Jordan 1-1, India 1-1, Philippines 0-2, Kazakhstan 0-2
Group F: Iran 2-0, South Korea 2-0, Japan 1-1, Iraq 1-1, Qatar 0-2, Thailand 0-2

In Group C, the only remaining game was completely meaningless, but already-qualified Russia did remain undefeated by beating already-eliminated Sweden 63-59 at home in Krasnodar as ex-NBA player Sergey Karasev had 12 points.

In Group D, Portugal got their first win by eliminating Belarus 77-62 in Sines. Olek Czyz and Poland then took care of business in Tartu, beating Estonia 94-63 to take the top spot. That left the hosts in second place, but in an unfavorable position to grab a runners up place. Olek had 8 points in 14 minutes. Ex-JC player Przemyslaw Zamojski had 15 points, naturalized ex-Western Kentucky player A.J. Slaughter had 12 points and 6 assists, and ex-NBA player Maciej Lampe had 12 points.

Standings: Poland 5-1, Estonia 3-3, Belarus 3-3, Portugal 1-5

In Group E, Slovenia made sure they finished unbeaten by going to Kiev and coming back to beat Ukraine 80-69. That left the hosts waiting on other results to see if they advanced. Goran Dragic had 22 points in the win as he gets ready for his NBA season. Kosovo was hoping to finally get that win in front of the home fans in Mitrovica, but lost 67-62. Naturalized ex-Utah player Jason Washburn had 14 points and 6 rebounds in the win while Kosovo swapped naturalized players for the last game and ex-Weber State player Scott Bamforth had 21 points.

In Group F, Albania picked up their first win in a meaningless game in Tirana as they beat Slovakia 72-65 with naturalized ex-BYU player Rashaun Broadus providing 17 points. The game that actually mattered was in Bar to close the day. Montenegro could have completely conceded the game and let Georgia join them easily, but still fought hard before losing 90-84 and leaving both teams content with the result. In the win, naturalized ex-Memphis player Michael Dixon had 31 points and 6 rebounds, Zaza Pachulia had 21 points and 13 rebounds as he heads back to the NBA, and former draft pick Viktor Sanikidze had 14 points and 7 rebounds. In the loss, Nikola Vucevic had 17 points and 8 rebounds as he heads back to the NBA, former draft pick Bojan Dubljevic had 17 points and 6 rebounds, and ex-Georgia (school not country) player Nemanja Djurisic had 17 points.

In Group G, Hungary had already qualified, but still came back and provided the home fans in Szolnok with something to cheer as beat Macedonia 63-61. Eric Boateng and Great Britain had a meaningless game in Luxembourg as they knew that they would finish in second place and this game against a last place team would be wiped out when the final comparison was made for the last tournament berths. He had 4 points in 10 minutes in an 82-75 loss. Ex-College of Charleston player Andrew Lawrence had 16 points, ex-Iowa player Gabriel Olaseni had 14 points and 15 rebounds, and ex-LIU player Kyle Johnson had 14 points. Ex-DII player Tom Schumacher had 20 points in the win.

The group winners all qualified. Then the second place teams were grouped together and had their results against the fourth place teams removed in order to create an even comparison across groups of different sizes. The top four teams in those standings advanced with Montenegro and Iceland knowing that they would advance based on record. On the other side of the standings, Estonia knew that they would not be in position to join the massive tiebreaker in the middle due to their poor record. That left four teams for two spots with Great Britain and Ukraine edging out the Netherlands and Bosnia and Herzegovina. They joined the other thirteen teams that already qualified. The four hosts, Finland, Israel, Romania, and Turkey are set. They will also be joined by the teams involved in Olympic play this summer, Spain, Lithuania, France, Serbia, Greece, Italy, the Czech Republic, Latvia, and Croatia.

The first game of the final day of the FIBA Asia Challenge was for 7th place. India concluded a fairly successful tournament with an 80-68 win over Taiwan. In the loss, ex-JC player Chou Yi-Hsiang had 15 points and naturalized ex-Tulane player Quincy Davis had 13 points and 15 rebounds.

In the fifth place game, China beat Japan 75-67. If the two teams had been from different regional federations, this game would have mattered more, but instead was just a game of pride.

In the third place game, Jordan beat Iraq 94-72. In the win, naturalized ex-DePaul player Dar Tucker had 19 points and 7 rebounds and ex-DII player Amin Abuhawwas had 13 points. Naturalized ex-Texas Southern player Kevin Galloway concluded his strong tournament with 12 points and 9 rebounds in the loss.

The final was not particularly surprising as Iran jumped out to a big lead in front of the home fans and beat South Korea 77-47. Hamed Haddadi capped off his tournament with 20 points and 23 rebounds. It will remain to be seen how the berths will finally be allocated for next summer's tournament now that Australia and New Zealand are set to make their appearance within the region. Historically, Iran's win would give them a berth independent of West Asia's bids and the hosts and defending champions China would also qualify.

Lindsey Harding did not play in Belarus's EuroBasket Women 2017 qualifier on Saturday. They lost to Belgium 67-61, leaving their qualification uncertain with no more games to play with a bye on Wednesday. If you want more information on games that were played, I wrote about them here:
http://www.womensbasketball247.com/2016/11/eurobasket-qualifiers-round-5-november-19th/

A couple of other events finished over the weekend.

The FIBA Asia U18 Championship for Women was conducted over the past week in Bangkok. China eased to the championship by beating Japan 78-47 as both teams secured spots for next summer with semifinal wins on Saturday. South Korea grabbed the third spot for next summer's U19 World Championship for Women with a 66-63 win over Taiwan. The tournament has two division with the teams not qualifying for the semifinals having to play teams in one game playoffs for the right to remain in the top division of the next edition of the tournament. Both top division teams were relegated as Indonesia beat India 49-38 and Thailand was not helped by homecourt advantage after losing 50-44 to Malaysia. Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, Singapore, and Sri Lanka did not even get the chance to fight their way out of the bottom division after not finishing high enough in round robin play.

Ecuador was the host of the U15 South American Championship for Women as the top three teams looked to advance to next summer's U16 FIBA Americas tournament. Argentina and the hosts advanced from Group A ahead of Peru while Venezuela and Colombia moved on from Group B in front of Chile and Uruguay. Venezuela and Argentina won their semifinals and qualification on Saturday and then Argentina prevailed 65-54 to leave Ibarra as the champions on Sunday. Colombia left the hosts disappointed 57-44 in the key final day game. Uruguay beat Peru on Saturday and then Chile on Sunday to finish 5th.

Belarus qualifies for EuroBasket Women 2017 thanks to other results. It is unclear if Lindsey Harding will be playing for them again or if she will have other priorities during the European offseason after retiring from the WNBA. Here is a recap I wrote of all of the games played on Wednesday:

The final spot was determined today when Spain beat Bosnia and Herzegovina for 5th place.
