What factors should be considered when evaluating a coaches performance?
1. Record over a period of time
Certainly coach K evaluates highly on this one.
2. Success at recruiting in a highly competitive atmosphere
Again, coach K has the knack of bringing in great candidates who fit the program, especially when one considered the high academic standards required
3. Maintaining a clean and respected program
Coach K may be the gold standard of ethical behavior and the program has been clean unlike many direct competitors.
4. Ability to adapt to changes in basketball, including rules, trends like OAD and general successful approaches
Coach K has shown himself to adapt to OAD, zone approaches, and sets his approach to the reality to the skills of his players
5. Advancing the prestige of the university
Coach K's work with charities, his national and Olympic team successes have placed Duke in the spotlight and all of it has been good
6. Development and retention of support staff
Many of coach K's supporting staff have been given roles as head coaches and the ones currently within the program are home grown.
7. Avoiding complacency and self satisfaction at the expense of the program
One with great success faces this danger, especially one whose success is unsurpassed. Age can also factor into a tendency to harden ones approach. So far so good with coach K on this one.
