At unc, schadenfreude is a model of Porsche that Fats Thomas lets certain people drive.

Here, it is a beautiful thing.

Fun fact: unc has not defeated a team seeded better than 5 in the NCAA Tournament since 2009. During that time, Duke is 6-2 against teams seeded 4 or better, with 2 championships.

The list of teams who have won at least 1 game over a team seeded 4 or better since 2009 is as follows:

Arizona
Baylor
Butler
Cincinnati
Cornell
Dayton
Duke
Florida
Florida State
Florida-Gulf Coast
Georgia State
Gonzaga
Harvard
Hawaii
Indiana
Kansas
Kentucky
LaSalle
Lehigh
Louisville
Marquette
Mercer
Michigan
Michigan State
Middle Tennessee State
Murray State
NC State
Norfolk State
Ohio
Ohio State
Oklahoma
Oregon
Saint Mary’s
Stanford
Stephen F. Austin
Syracuse
UAB
UConn
Utah
VCU
Villanova
Virginia
Washington
West Virginia
Wisconsin
Xavier

That's 46 teams, in case you're keeping score at home.

Yup. The inbounding player is frequently the most dangerous player on the floor.

If only there were some play Roy could have watched over and over and over for 24 years that would have reminded him kf this.

I didn't watch it, I don't sleep well under optimal circumstances. If I'd stayed up to watch that, I'd still be awake and in no condition for work. I don't regret not staying up. But when my clock radio went off at 6:00 this morning, the first thing I heard was some announcer scream "first time since 1985" and I new UNC lost. I was wide awake and in a good mood, I'll feel that way all day.

Not because I hate Roy Williams, not even because they've committed academic fraud. But because they have the worst fans who have ever lived and will ever live.

I felt this way for a long time, my feelings were confirmed when UNC won the 2005 title. I worked with a bunch of UNC grads, we got along fine if we didn't talk basketball (they knew I rooted for Duke, I told them early on because I prefer honesty). The day after the '05 title game, they celebrated for 2 minutes, then one said "we're gonna suck next year." When Duke has won titles, I have celebrated for days if not months, putting up "2010 national champions" posters in my cubicle, buying commemorative magazines, championship hats, t-shirts, etc.

Heels fans win and they whine less than 24 hours after the fact. They whine when they lose, they whine when they win.

I'm going to watch video of their fans sobbing all day and I'll never tire watching it.

.

In Roy's defense, the inbounding player was Villanova's most prolific 3 point shooter with a history of making some very deep three's as well, so there is really no reason to believe he might be a legitimate option to shoot with the clock running out.

So question - what's the worst way to lose a championship game - getting blown out (like Duke in 1990) or losing on a last second shot (like UNC 2016)?

IMO, I think losing on a buzzer beater is worse because it was a game that you could have won, but didn't. You constantly go over every play in your head wondering "What if?" And bad officiating becomes a factor because it's a one possession game, and any one of us can find at least one questionable call that went against your team.

Therefore, I contend this was the worst possible way for a team to lose a championship game. And it happened to UNC. :)

The only thing that would have made it worse would be if Duke had beaten them.

Buzzer beater is WAY worse. Especially this one.

I think of it like this - as a Duke fan wanting UNC to lose, I was practically rooting for Villanova as if they were Duke. And that game was an emotional roller coaster. When Nova got up by 10, I thought I could relax a little. But then I watched their offense start to crumble and Marcus Paige hitting HUGE clutch shot after clutch shot. Then came the missed FTs. And the double clutch 3 pointer with 4.7 seconds left that tied the game.

I though "crap. This is it. Nova will miss the shot and we'll go into OT, where UNC's depth and lack of foul trouble will wear Nova down."

Then Jenkins drains the dagger and I am elated.

Just imagine reversing that feeling and multiplying it by 20, and adding on the impending NCAA doom.

If it had been a blow out, you are resigned to the loss and you might even turn the TV off instead of hanging around at the edge of your seat way past your bedtime.

This was the perfect ending.

PackMan97

I'd have preferred 'Nova to lay down a 44 point drubbing on the Heels like they did against OK. Now that would have been epic. This is a good consolation prize if I can't get my historic beatdown.

Although I am quite happy with the ending, I agree. UNC lost, but went out in a blaze of glory, so to speak. It's true that the loss probably feels worse to them in the moment, but I would have preferred Villanova to crush them to dust, nuke the dust pile from orbit, and once the glowing goop had cooled a bit, piss on the ashes. The whole athletics scandal has really changed how I look at them. I can't turn the hate knob off 11.

Yea, but if that happens:

- UNC fans turn the game off and start looking forward to baseball season
- We don't get all the reaction videos of the final shot

Not a bad thought. I'd have been happy with a 31 point unc loss, eclipsing the largest prior margin of defeat in a MBB NCAAT championship game, IIRC.

I guess there's room on the Mount for a guest...

While tarheel tears are delicous, I'd much rather have them apathetic and distrested that a blowout loss would provide.

I'm not one that wants to play with my victim, I want the end to be swift and decisive. Instead, this is a game that will go down in NCAA lore as one of the best ever. Regardless of what happens as a result of NCAA sanctions, 30 years from now folks will still be talking about 'Nova v UNC like they do State v. Houston. I don't want them to have that important a place in NCAA history. I'd much rather they be a footnote for worst loss ever in a title game.

Oh well. We can't always get what I want. I'll "settle" for the tears of tarheel nation. I've always wanted to switch my pool to saltwater. It will be nice to swim in them all summer long.

Losing by 40 points stinks, but it doesn't hurt. You just know you weren't the better team.

Losing on a buzzer beater after leading by 5 at the half, leading by as much as 9, and overcoming a 10 point lead late in the 2nd half? In a game you know in your heart was officiated terribly?

Excruciating. And beautiful.

Oh, that would hurt them. To know they weren't even competitive. Not for one second out of two thousand four hundred. It would hurt them.

Then to know the NCAA hammer is going to drop and they'll remember their last moment of glory was just a prelude to 40 point beat down after 40 point beatdown. Except instead of losing to 40 to the NCAA champion, they'll be losing by 40 to BC. To UNC-W. To ECU. To Prarie View A&M. I want their entire future laid out before them as the wasteland it ought to become. I want them to think they never deserve to win another game let alone another NCAA title.

Regarding UNC-CH and this little problem of theirs, I'm good with hurting them as a metric. More equals better, as usual in life. Humiliation has a lot of hurt. More than losing by a squeak.

The only thing that would have made it better would be if Duke had beaten them.

Fixed it for you. It's all in the perspective. :D

As far as the best way for the Heels to lose, that game was the second-best way, in my opinion. I actually laid it all out with my 18-year-old son before the game.

Scenario number one was Villanova beating them by 30.

Scenario number two was what ended up happening: Villanova winning on a buzzer beater.

Scenario number three, which, in my humble opinion, would have been the BEST of all possible scenarios, goes like this: The Heels are down by two points with about 7 seconds left. They advance the ball up the court and get it to Paige on the left wing in his favorite spot. He launches the three right at the buzzer, which goes in. Points are put on the board, the confetti comes down, everybody collapses in a happy hug around Paige. It's celebration pandemonium. Heels win! Heels win!!

But then, the refs go to the monitor. And on the monitor they find that there are like 5 molecules of connection between the very tip of the third finger of Paige's hand and the ball at the time the clock reads double zero and the red light is glowing around the backboard. Therefore, the points are taken OFF the board, and Villanova is declared the victor.

THAT would've been the absolute best way for them to have lost. The entire internet would've been riddled with photos of the ball just BARELY touching his outstretched finger, with the glorious double zero/red light in the background.

Just my opinion.

But still, option number two was pretty danged good, and in every way superior to option number one.

I'm loving it. But you know what's crazy about all this? By any sane measure the tar holes had a spectacular season. They won the ACC regular season, won the ACC tournament, and made it all the way to the national title game, which they almost won. So what makes it fun is chiefly seeing their spoiled fan base cry and whine. (Note to self: don't act like that if Duke ends up in a similar situation some day.)

Good that our win's reaction exceeded the response to their loss. I guess...

Duke didn't win the game Monday night, but Duke won the season vis a vis UNC.

That's a strange thing to say considering UNC obviously had a better team with better results than Duke in the 2015-16 season. But if we adjust the lens and take a multi-season, long-term view of the rivalry, Duke fans feel like winners right now.

The only thing Duke fans NEEDED to have happen this season was for UNC to NOT to win a national title and for Duke to make the tournament. These goals further crystallized when it became clear that Amile would not return from injury this season.

So when Kris Jenkins' shot swished through the net at the buzzer, Duke won the season. Because Duke just won the national title last year. And Duke has won two titles since UNC last "won" one. AND we're going to have a loaded team next season that will be preseason top 3 at worst and likely preseason #1. And UNC now might go several seasons before contending at this level again. AND UNC is facing looming sanctions that might strip away a couple of previous titles!

Monday night came up all roses for Duke vis a vis UNC and the rivalry. We didn't win the game, but we won the season.

It helps when the rival fanbase is psychotic. UNC fans spent three quarters of the season vilifying Marcus Paige and trotting out the old standard that the game has passed Roy by...and of course there's the refs who keep planting chips in our heads. Their response to UNC's outstanding tournament run is to blame the governing body of the sport which, aside from including peer representatives, is so dysfunctional you naturally assume that organizing an air-tight conspiracy is within its grasp. They're nuts but they are entertaining.

As long as were schadenfreuding, here's a little GeDukenexperiment.

You can have any previous title game loss changed to a win, but you have to pay with one of the five existing championships.

Which one do your trade away? Which one do you trade for?

My answers are only my own, but they would go like this

1963: please tell me more, wise elderly person
1978: very tempting
1986: very very tempting
1990: nah somehow i'm over this, might possibly have to do with 1991
1994: would be more tempting if it weren't right next to 1991 and 1992
1999: nope, coz 2001 took care of this

I'm not sure how I would rank them, but at this remove, 1999 is the one I'm probably least regretful about.

I'd take 1964. (We weren't in the title game in 1963.) In fact, I really thought we were gonna win -- we sailed through the Regionals at Reynolds, and UCLA had no one over 6-5.

I dunno which one I would give up. But, if we had actually won in 1964, we might also have won in 1966.

'86 is the right answer as for which one to take. I think '15 is the one to give up. '10 was really important - we had 9 years since a title, 6 since a final four, a sudden rep for underperforming in the tournament, and 2 UNC titles in the prior 5 years. Plus that team was just so wonderful.

And, if '15 doesn't happen, maybe Tyus Jones stays for '16 and the '16 team is that much better.

Makes sense. Still not my choice. We're never getting '86 no matter what deals we make though. Sigh.

'86 for '92. Most of the '92 team already got a championship in '91 (obviously). When Florida repeated in 2007, we could no longer say we were the only repeat champion since Wooden.

Let me add that the decision isn't easy. '92 is Duke's submission for "greatest teams ever" discussions in large part because '92 repeated. It would hurt a lot to have lost that championship, especially if it were lost in the Elite 8 to Kentucky on a lucky Sean Woods bank shot. Ultimately, though, I decided that the '86 for '92 swap is the only swap that would provide a significant net increase in Duke players that have won NCAA titles.

I was in attendance for 2010. A pox on you sir.

I was in attendance in 86 and 2010.

2010 helped ease the pain (and massive hangover) of 86.

Since this is entirely hypothetical I will think outside the box...

I will trade 1993 for 1978
I will trade 2005 for 1986
and I will trade 2009 for 1999
Oh and I will trade the 1924 Helms thingy for 1994

Good news for you - you might get to trade 1993 - 2009 for an angry letter from the NCAA.

My take is that I give up none and Verga not get sick and Givens not get hot. That resolves '66 and '78. '64 was the start of an era and I can live with that.

Truthfully, when I saw that video of Ramses the mascot going down--however it happened--all I could think of was the "adopt a UNC fan" parody that circulated at the end of the season, complete with the Sarah McLauchlin song and opening B&W shot of Ramses with his/its head in its hands.

As a long-time Duke fan, let me say I wouldn't trade any championship for another year.

I will say that of the years when it didn't work, I would rank disappointments this way:

1. 1986 -- the first great K team, a group of guys who built the program from absolutely nothing to the top of the heap. Plus, they were the best team in the country that season ... they just ran out of gas late in the season (both Henderson and Alarie were on fumes in postseason, only Dawkins and Amaker were still fresh).

2. 1999 -- Beat UConn in the title game and THIS would arguably be the greatest Duke and ACC team of all time. Nobody every dominated the ACC like these guys -- 19-0 (counting the tournament) without a close game.

3. 1994 -- a gritty group of overachievers who rode Grant Hill's talent to within a fingernail of the national title.

4. 1978 -- Forever's Team ... a young team in an era when young teams never won. But also a turnaround team -- after four straight years as last in the ACC, they play for the national title. A little easier to take because they did lose to a better team, even if Goose Givens was out of his mind that night in St. Louis.

5. 1966 -- because of Verga's illness. This team did falter in the semifinals. Who knows what happens if they play Texas Western in the finals? It certainly rewrites history either way.

6. 2004 -- Again, a semifinal loss, but they would have beaten Georgia Tech in the finals. It hurts because it was such a poorly officiated game -- note, I'm not claiming Duke got screwed ... UConn got screwed too. It would have been nice to see this game play out with decent refs.

These are the only ones that really bother me. I can live with the other disappointments -- even 1989, when Brickey's injury changed the course of the semifinal game with Seton Hall.

But as much as I wish 1986 could have won a title, I wouldn't give up one of the five championships Duke did win to give them one.

Honestly, those are the only ones

Priceless-a petition to the NCAA to overturn the Villanova victory. Lots of fun comments:

https://www.change.org/p/national-i-want-the-the-unc-villanova-ncaa-championship-game-overturned

This one is my personal favorite, at least for now:

"The refs were very bias. Many times they let Villinova get away with alot of walks. As a basketball player I can tell you that letting a guy travel like that makes him hard to defend. Are guys work very hard on the court and in the classroom. Its not write for them to loose the game because of the refs. This was there championship that the refs stole."

Booooooooo. Well, the "officiating" result is there either way. And the "refs" one is not in my non-incognito suggestions any longer either (it's been replaced by "box score"), but either way I disclaim personal responsibility for that one. It must have been one of my salty UNC colleagues!!! :)

Officiating isn't on mine. I get buzzer beater, parade, basketball, and wildcats.

and villanova mia khalifa.

I don't get that last one.

That last one's a joke, in case anyone is lost.

Easy.

'86 for 2010.

Agreed. In fact, I have always felt that 2010 was the karmic make-up for 1986.

!986 being the year we had the undeniable best TEAM in the country. 2010 being the year we quite clearly didn't have the best team in the country.

As a life long Carolina fan and Duke alum, I was appalled at the officiating Monday night. The game must be replayed.

Completely agree. I was a Duke student in 1986 and IT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE BEST PARTY AND NIGHT OF MY LIFE!!! Instead, it was one of the most depressing. I will never forgive Pervis Ellison for taking that away from me.

2010 was so unexpected, I guess I could give that one up since we have 2015 and 2017! ;)
