I was going to post something about UNC being both losers AND cheaters and how it must feel for UNC to suck at life....but you know, that was a helluva ending and credit to both teams.

But a sweet, sweet ending nonetheless.

The best possible consolation for the Cheaters making the final is an overtime forcing, epic heave three by legend Marcus Paige only to be outdone on the very next and final possession by an even more epic, history-writing, soul-crushing three that will be replayed over and over and over every single year for the rest of my life and well beyond. The legend that was to be Marcus Paige's shot to force overtime and perhaps a UNC rout lasted for 4.7 seconds before it was all but erased, forever to live as an asterisk next to a national championship loss.

What an incredible game. What an incredible ending. Wow.

Believe me, I'm not trying to claim any of Nova's glory here with this post.

But I do wonder if this loss was just a tad bit extra distasteful to UNC fans because of some similarities of Nova's style with Duke.

All that switching on defense, all that fronting of the post and effectively denying Brice the ball (very reminiscent of the second half in Chapel Hill, no?), 4-out offense. Both private universities.

Obviously Duke didn't win (or did we?). Nova won. But you could make the case that Nova did some Duke things (at an exceptional level that we didn't reach this season) to win it.

An absolutely epic title game, one of the best ever no doubt. For Heel fans to see the team mount the epic 10 point comeback with Marcus Paige, the most likable kid to wear that uniform maybe ever making championship play after championship play including the final 8 points on a closely guarded corner 3, a bare knuckle brawl 2 under the hoop and then a double clutch miracle 3 to tie, only to lose the title on a flawlessly executed buzzer beater - that is just a cruel brutal stomach punch. What a night.

The North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball program is the intercollegiate men's basketball team of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels have won five(almost 6 until Jenkins killed the dream) NCAA Tournament Championships (1957, 1982, 1993, 2005 and 2009)[1] and were retroactively named the national champions by the Helms Athletic Foundation and the Premo-Porretta Power Poll for their undefeated season in 1924.[2] North Carolina's five NCAA Tournament Championships are tied for third-most all-time.

1. The cheaters did not prosper.

2. Dad gum it, Carolina will have to live without Johnson and Paige next year. Is it too early to start looking that far ahead?

3. We won last year playing four freshmen. UNC lost this year without having to play any freshmen. I guess solid recruiting pays off.

It couldn't happen to a more deserving team. They used shennanigans to delay punishment long enough to give themselves a chance to win a title. I will say, I'm impressed with Paige, he's been one helluva competitor his entire career and he played his butt off in that game. The shot to tie the game was insane. The heartbreak that followed it was poetic justice served on a platter for UNC CHeater nation. I'll sleep with a big smile on my face, that's for sure!

Having said that, does anyone think 'Nova's shot will eclipse that of Laettner's?

Not for me, but it is close.

Tonight's shot counted for a lot more. No one can deny that, and that factors big into making it close. But not enough, because:

Laettner's shot still counted for something important (a final four berth)
The Hill-to-Laettner shot required full-court travel with much less time
Hill-to-Laettner shot was for either win or lose. This one would just be to send it to OT if it missed.
IMO the Hill-to-Laettner game cannot be topped for a thrilling, back and forth, high-performance offensive game in the face of real defensive effort (i.e., high scoring without NBA All-Star game caliber of play).

All the Nova shot had was - it was for a national championship. NC game is a big stage. But the shot was for an NC vs overtime, not NC vs. runner-up.

Blaming the refs was to be expected. What continues to amaze me is the lack of awareness unc fans have always had and continue to have. There are two threads condoning about one and done players not attending enough classes. Really??? One of them is a Brandon ingram thread where they discuss how they didn't need him this year with no regard for the coming years. Seriously??? One poster actually said and I'm not making this up, with regards to the ncaa and the refs that "God was watching tonight." Well if God cares about the outcone of a game you darn right He was watching, that's why you lost.

I mean i know it's their way, grew up around them. I'm just amazed at how strong their ignorance is.

This was the national title game. 99% of the time UNC wins in OT after Paige's unbelievable pump 3 from way out. Marcus Paige will go down in history ... with Sean Woods

Incredible game, well played on both sides (poorly officiated on both sides) and the best possible ending!! Even better if they have to stew over this for a year or two of probation before they can even play another NCAA game :D

Wow.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICZ8HO8c9bwI wasn't alive then, but it's a little harder for me to be emotionally invested in NCST basketball. Heck, I find myself pulling for non-UNC ACC teams in the tourney, but I'm rooting a million times harder for a UNC loss in the title game.

And what this game brings to the table is not one but TWO amazing shots. The world was a crazy place when Paige hit an amazing 3 with 4 seconds left. To have that followed up by another amazing game winner was incredible. It was like being at basketball's summit two times in a matter of 1 minute. I certainly couldn't ask for more and pray that I'm alive to see another title game like this.

I have to agree with Indoor66 here. Sure, Paige seems like a class act. But increasingly, it appears that the fake classes gambit has been supplanted by the fake learning disability gambit. If reports are right, evidence supports the notion that UNC is still trying to cheat the system, so they are still deserving of obloquy.

If I were the COI I would feel they deserve a 5 year ban on competition in revenue sports. As a Duke fan the only hesitation I have with this is that IF their academic reputation outside of "student athletes" survives intact (say, because "impermissible benefits were not available to the general student population", so the perception of a non-athlete's UNC degree is untarnished), this could turn them into the southern University of Chicago. I have this "If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine" worry in the back of my head.

But there's no doubt they would re-emphasize athletics as soon as the ban was over, however. Too many sports-crazy alums and ordinary people who live vicariously through them.

unc has announced that due to years of cheating, they self imposed a post season ban for this years basketball team with 4.7 seconds remaining in the championship game. Hence they are declaring themselves co-champions, and will hang a banner.

In response, the NCAA has issued a statement: "The unc system has made this announcement willingly, and we accept their self imposed penalty and consider our investigation complete. Due to unc's integrity and rapid response in this matter, and their willingness to set an example for the rest of our member schools, we are awarding them an automatic berth in the 2016-2017 Championship game. Furthermore, we are moving the venue to the Dean E. Smith Center, with the starting time for tip-off to be determined by unc, with a 2 minute warning to be given to the opposing team. Referees will be selected from the seniors on the unc cheerleader squad."

This this this this this. If UNC had won it all as a result of the delay, I would have hated it, because it was such a stupid obvious tactic. Worse the NCAA indirectly COMPLIED WITH THE DELAY understanding why they did it. The NCAA should be FURIOUS with UNC for trying to pull some ish. Letting UNC get this far shows just how big a sham the NCAA is.

If UNC was really a class program, their winning would have been stung, but not enfuriated me as much.

He was very cool, in stark contrast to his behavior in the final 3 minutes when he was increasingly losing his mind. Raf said, "I have never seen Jay Wright yell at Arch like that..." and I thought to myself - this dude is losing it when he needs to be a calming influence. It ultimately didn't matter, but I think Wright was simply exhausted and relieved. The next time he wins one, he can be euphoric.

I watched the pro-Villanova broadcast but who prefers listening to commentary that is intentionally skewed? If these announcers provide some expertise then let's hear their impartial evaluation. I especially don't want to hear commentary from someone who is intentionally biased toward one side, and who was hired in order to slant the commentary. Even a hard-core fan will usually not give you commentary that is intentionally biased. Next time I think I'll turn off the TV commentary and turn on a radio show that at least purports to be neutral.

Marcus Paige is an EXTREMELY nice kid. Would love to have him in a Duke jersey.

Brice Johnson is equally respectable.

Paige, chose to go to UNCheat. That says a lot about him and none of it's good. Brice "hang on the rim and scream 8 times a game" Johnson, it not respectable. Kid had a good year...let everyone know it 10 times a game (oh and he underachieved for a few years too). Buh-bye

Guys I know a lot of Hole fans in NC and I sort of feel bad for them. I think this is definitely one of those that we say "no team lost tonight" - for what it's worth.

I live in NC. I know lots of cheater fans too. In fact, when UNCheat beat us in CIS a few weeks ago quite a few of them found me in person, on Facebook, text, etc. (I politely congratulated them on their big win). I don't feel bad for them at all and I think this is definitely one of those that we say "UNC lost tonight" and we celebrate that. I'm not searching them out and rubbing it in one on one they way they did to me and I won't hear from ANY of them today but I'm just happy. 9F

This is awesome footage. Something worth watching over and over again. I just watched it 2 more times just now. Beautiful.

My favorite picture I've seen so far shows UNCheat students holding up two signs: "Where's D**k" and "Duke Couldn't make the TRIP" (with a picture of Grayson). Then the bottom half shows Grayson in National Championship gear and caption that read something like "I'm in Durham, stop by an your way back and I'll show you my ring". Classic.

Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl
Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl.

I hope that symbolically means the NOA and the COI...

The hysterical coach in the March arcade
Screaming he moans, “I’ve just been made”
Then sends out for the doctor who pulls down the shade
Says, “My advice is to not let the boys in”

The big divider for me was that this was a national title game. One of those teams was walking out as a national champion. Very few title games have ended so dramatically.

Just 8 years ago, in 2008, Kansas came back from 9 down with two minutes left against Memphis and tied the game on a Mario Chalmers 3-pointer with 2 seconds left, finally winning the game in OT.

Not to take anything away from last night's amazing finish, with the dueling three-pointers to end the game, but that 2008 game was just as dramatic, imo. There have been lots of other incredible championship games as well. Though I'm not sure UNC lost any of them, so maybe this one is better.

Those Memphis and Kansas teams also had a chance to beat national champions from other years.

This UNC Team wasn't beating anybody. (2014/2011 UConn excluded)

2015 Duke beats this Carolina team. Oh wait, we did that twice.

It's more relief with me. I don't think I've felt relief this intense at another team losing since the 2007 Patriots in the Super Bowl.

I'm really happy today (as I wear my 2015 National Championship shirt). I feel as though a weight has been lifted. What a beautiful thing it was to see the cheaters lose that game that way.

I hope Paige misses every shot he ever takes. He chose to go to UNCheat. Might have been an nice kid once upon a time but once he chose to go cheater blue, he can miss every shot, lose every game.

I've probably watched this one 10 times already today. It never gets old.

Everybody there is so devastated. The dark haired girl in the foreground may be traumatized for life. But if you look closely for the first 20 seconds, there is a short girl with dark hair in the center of the picture who is laughing her butt off (behind the dark haired girl in the foreground). I'm thinking she is either totally clueless or a Duke fan that went to watch with her Tar Heel friends. Either way, she couldn't be happier.

Cheater fans are horrible winners - much better losers. When they won in 05 and 09, we had to endure a year of woofing, chest pounding and tired, old Duke bashing, e.g. Coach K has a rat face, Duke gets all the calls, etc. When they lose, we only hear the whining along with the never-ending, irrational Duke bashing. Much, much easier to deal with.

If we're discussing the best post-season game of all tine, the 1974 NC State-Maryland game in the ACC Tournament has to be on the short list.

Technically, not an NCAA Tournament game. But ii was an elimination game involving two of the nation's three best teams. So, a de facto NCAA game.

And, yes, I do feel sorry for Marcus Paige. A class act all the way.

And showing my you-kids-get-off-my-lawn credentials, it boggles my mind that the 1963 title game is so little remembered. Cincinnati, trying for its third straight title, has a double-digit lead in the second half. Loyola claws back, ties it at the buzzer and wins in OT at the buzzer.

Two buzzer-beaters.

As an aside, seven of the 10 starters in that 1963 game were African American, which is a milestone in the game's history, little remarked on.

From today's Boswell chat at the Washington Post:

A huge percentage of people played some sport for some coach at some time and we all know that as a player you "read the coach." You see his/her face. You take a message from it, in addition to whatever words are said. It's universal. And your face in crisis is part of your skill set as a coach. And Roy gets a "D" in Face In A Crisis. It matters. He fumed at the Final Four about know-nothing critics who dare to second guess him. He came right out and said: I know more than all of 'em.

He's probably right. But we can see his face. Maybe Roy's brain can coach, but, far too often, his face can't. And that counts as part of the package, too.

"But I take the "fake classes" charges very seriously. We'll see how it works out. But as Charles Barkley said if a college coach can't take responsibility for all aspects of the campus life of 15-or-less players, including the quality of their academics, then is he really doing his WHOLE job?"

Maybe it's just me but tying a game and pulling away in OT just isn't the same as what transpired in ~5 seconds last night. Heck, as a Duke fan, Kansas and Memphis just aren't as important as seeing the Heels crushed in dramatic fashion. And to top it off - MJ is in attendance, Hubert Davis is crying and UNC fans go from cocky to suicidal in front of our eyes. Yeah, Kansas/Memphis isn't comparable.

Sorry, I thought we were talking objectively about the best finish.

Also, down three and hitting a three-pointer at the buzzer is a much more difficult and dramatic endeavor, exceeded only by down 2 and hitting a three-pointer at the buzzer (a la Austin Rivers). Tied up and hitting a three-pointer at the buzzer is amazing, but there's much less pressure on the shot. Objectively, I mean, taking the Tar Heel factor out of it. Except for the Austin Rivers game I referred to parenthetically, that had the Tar Heel factor as well, even if it did lack the NCAA championship game angle. But it was Duke beating UNC on that shot, so using your subjective test, wasn't that better?

Or, if we're being Duke-fan-subjective, wasn't 2010 better? It featured a Cinderella underdog launching an improbable would-be-game-winning halfcourt shot that missed by maybe an inch? And Duke won the natty. Just that last bit makes it better than this year.

Jim, I posted this a few years ago apropos to your discussion of the State-Maryland game. Here's the first half of the post:

I don’t live next door to Verne but I do see him often in our small town of Steamboat Springs. A few weeks ago [actually, way back in 2011], I spoke with Verne Lundquist about “The Shot,” which he called for CBS. Until I saw a recent You Tube clip, I hadn’t even realized that he was the game announcer. I was with another neighbor, former Duke hurler Larry Harrison. “What did you think,” I asked Verne, “when it happened?”

“Well,” he said, “there was total silence [at the mike] for a few minutes and the camera just panned the court and all the celebrations going on. Then Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe came over and asked Len Elmore [Verne’s partner that day – who knew?], ‘Until today I thought the ACC final you played against North Carolina State in 1974 was the best college basketball game I had ever seen. Which game do you think was better?’ Len hesitated for a long minute and finally said, ‘I think this game may have been better.’”

This might be a new low. Today at work, a diehard Tar Heel--a nice, quiet and reserved guy--who for the most part has been good-natured about things (though he did get in a few jabs over the last two weeks) was literally weeping because of the reffing last night. He seems to honestly believe the refs were both paid off and part of an NCAA conspiracy (why does it have to be both?? I don't know!).

The whole fanbase is freaking delusional...

He actually didn't know if the game was over yet. He was concerned that upon review, the heels would have .x remaining on the clock.

I think UNC's misdeeds off the court make them disliked by more than only Duke fans. There's also something to be said about jubilation and despair both being crammed into 5 seconds on the biggest stage. I'm sure 99.9999% of the population was certain UNC did enough to fight in OT and probably win it.

Paige's career, legacy, story for the grandkids, etc were all on the line in the NATIONAL championship. Every kid that has ever picked up a basketball has dreamed of making the shot he made...and the one Villanova made right after Paige. TWO of the tourney's best shots back-to-back in a matter of 5 seconds.

I think the amount of pressure between Austin's shot and those made last night is debatable. Paige's shot was certainly as intense - if he misses everything UNC worked for in down the drain (and at that angle I'm sure "Oh SH**" entered his mind). There will always be more UNC vs Duke games and those games don't define a season as successful or not.

As much as I love Duke/UNC games, subjectively, I'll take the dramatic sequence of events that results in UNC having a natty snatched away. That season ended up being a dud for Duke whereas UNC almost had the biggest prize. Nattys don't just grown on trees.

Now we know why Ochefu grabbed the mop:

Before that last push for a basket, Ochefu grabbed the floor mop from the boy who had been using it and vigorously -- and, at the time, inexplicably -- began to wipe the sweat off the floor, at about midcourt. He knew that he had to set a pick there for Arcidiacono, and that Arcidiacono was supposed to head to the basket from there. Ochefu wanted that area to be very dry, so Arcidiacono wouldn’t slip. After all, he was expecting Arcidiacono to take that final shot. In fact, he had kind of demanded him to take it.

I don't live in NC, so I don't have to deal with a massive obnoxious fanbase on a daily basis. However, I have been working for 25 years up here in the northeast with my partner who never had any interest whatsoever in college basketball. This year, his daughter became a freshman at UNCheat. All of a sudden, he's the world's biggest college basketball fan, constantly in my office about how good UNCheat is. He hasn't come by today, however. He is just working (or maybe weeping) quietly in his office. For the sake of good work relations, I haven't rubbed it in, but it sure is tempting. And I am sure he has heard the loop that I set up of the final 4 1/2 seconds of the game, if not the first, second or third time, then maybe the 10th, 11th or 12th time (the roar of the crowd can be loud). Oh, the anguish!

He sounds like a true hole. And don't say anything to him. He is waiting for you to do so, and it is KILLING him.

Went to lunch today at Randy's on Miami Blvd in RTP. Pretty busy place and today was no exception. As I sat there and ate my pizza in my Duke National Championship shirt from last year (as opposed to the one from 2010), I looked around and realized that I didn't see any UNCheat shirts or hats. Nothing. Not one shirt not one hat. What a beautiful day this is.

I work at the VA, and I have seen them all over the place today. So they have something to wipe their tears upon . . .

You cannot get more dramatic than a game winning shot that goes through the net with 0.00 on the clock. Sure, it's more dramatic if the winning team was down before the shot was launched, instead of tied, but for drama, the finality of the game winning shot is paramount.

I went home to Durham for Christmas and made a stop by the Duck Shop, picked up a couple of Duke 2015 National Champion decals for the cars. I have other Duke stickers on the cars, so I haven't made it a point to stick the new ones on yet...I think I'll do that today:)...just as a friendly reminder.

I don't know. A game-tying shot that goes in at the buzzer seems about the same to me. But maybe not. I happened to attend the Kansas/Memphis final in 2008 (as well as the Duke/Kentucky quarterfinal in 1992), and I only watched this one on TV, so maybe that's affecting my judgment.

Also, I'm not at all suggesting last night's game wasn't incredible/amazing/dramatic/whatever-adjective-you-choose. I live in Philadelphia (about 15 minute drive from Villanova) and hate UNC so I was doubly invested in the game and I let out a fairly large shout at both teams' last shots. I'm just saying it's not automatically the best game or greatest shot of all time.

National championship or beating UNC twice?

I'll take the natty, please. And I'll totally rub it in UNC's face. Point is, there's still bigger prizes to play for after a UNC/Duke regular season game. Heck hasn't UNC beat us in most of our title runs and vice versa...glad our guys didn't pack it in after those L's.

In Duke's 5 championship season they are 10-3 against the Heels.

6245Another thing that made this sweet for Duke fans. I think they said 50-something former Tarheels there and Roy was letting them pump up the guys whereas Nova didn't talk to outsiders. All those Tarheels with collectively a bunch of wins over Duke, but on this night they had their hearts broken. And they know they're still tied with Duke at 5 while possibly have 3-4 down years to look forward to. They also know that Duke is bringing in studs. :)

Just watched the replay several times and Marcus Paige def double dribbled on his 3 pointer to tie the game.

After reading this I re-watched the replay several times as well, but I didn't see a double dribble. He had the ball in both hands but it was before dribbling, then he dropped it and dribbled twice with one hand before he shot. That's what I saw, anyway.

Agreed. He ripped the ball through with both hands, started the first dribble with both hands (which is fine), and then took the second dribble with one hand. No double dribble.

On the wide shot it is hard to tell, but the slow mo replay starting at 36 seconds shows it pretty clearly.

Would Yesterday be a good song for the heel fans to play today?
The Fred Brown pass has bothered me as much as anything over the years and while not forgotten last night it shifted a little deeper into the past.

He actually didn't know if the game was over yet. He was concerned that upon review, the heels would have .x remaining on the clock.

And what would they have done if the refs decided either time had expired before release or there was still time remaining after going through... All that confetti to clean up!

Was thinking about that today. Hibbett's (a mainly southern sporting goods store) was advertising all day yesterday on local radio that they would have "champions apparel" in the their stores today.
