Because it worked so well the last time they tried this...

If there is any blight to the 2010 title team (and it's only the most infinitesimal of blights) it's that they got the bad idea version of OSM.

Well, the worst part of 2010 was that they spent so much time showing the singer's face instead of basketball highlights. I don't think a new artist is in and of itself a horrible sin.

The original One Shining Moment (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OuJAxXWrno) from 1987. Lots of familiar faces in there.

Yes, I always thought Jennifer Hudson took a lot of unfair criticism over that--there was nothing wrong with her version of the song, it was the video editing that was the real problem.

Curious who they might get this time--presumably the singer is a big deal or they wouldn't change it up. John Legend? Doesn't seem like a good song for a rap version, but who knows?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. CBS has been using the same music for college basketball for years (best accompanied by footage of the Laettner shot), people positively associate it with the NCAA tournament, and it works. Same with OSM - leave it alone.

Watching this again, what is interesting is how much focus there is on the coaches. We see a lot of Tarkanian, Knight, Boeheim, and some others as well. Could be wrong but I feel like more recent versions have shown more players and fewer coaches (other than, say, the winning coach and people like the Ga. State coach who fell off his stool).

This is MY favorite version......the late Teddy Pendergast (IMO, he was born to sing THIS song!!).

(I still get nervous watching that last second shot by Butler. Truly did NOT miss by much !!)

Also Bobby Cremins, Pete Gillen (who coached Xavier at the time, and was eliminated from the 1987 Tournament by....Duke), Dean Smith, and Rick Pitino. And future coaches Steve Alford and Billy Donovan (he's the Providence player who hugs Pitino at the 1:27 mark).

If I'm counting right, and per Wikipedia, the Dave Barrett version has been used 10x, the Teddy Pendergrass version 6x, the Luther Vandross version 12x, and we have Jennifer Hudson all to ourselves with 2010.

The other worst part of 2010 is that they showed precisely zero Duke basketball highlights. Seriously. The only Duke game action is Singler being guarded by a Purdue player, Lance Thomas fouling Gordon Hayward, Matt Howard making a layup around Singler, and Hayward's missed three (with Singler being tossed out of the way like a rag doll). Otherwise it's a few celebration shots. Contrast to 2015, where we had the fast break passing that lead to Okafor's dunk against SDSU, Justise's 3 against the Zags, Grayson dunking against MSU, Grayson drive+1 against Wisconsin, and, of course, Tyus Stones. You could tell that Duke actually played games in the 2015 video; in 2010, the appearance is that others played games but somehow we won. I realize that there were fewer memorable game moments by Duke players that tournament (the most memorable to me off the top of my head are Andre's 3s against Baylor, Jordan Davidson in Final Four garbage time against W.Va., Lance's offensive rebound against Baylor, and Zoubek's block on Hayward), but still - not having a single shot of us the national champion executing a successful basketball play was, to me, poor form.

These are, of course, minor details that do not in any way diminish my enjoyment of the championship (and the amount that I've written about it already is disproportionate to how much I actually care about it). But it would have been materially better had the headshots of Jennifer Hudson (who, I agree, did a lovely job singing the song) been swapped out with basketball.

Don't forget Singler and Plumlee both somehow dunking at the same time on West Virginia!
