The United States team with Jayson Tatum, Frank Jackson, and Marques Bolden along with honorary membership for Harry Giles has been known for a while, but the world roster was announced today so it seems like a good time to start the thread:
http://www.nikehoopsummit.com/world-select-team-announced-for-2016-nike-hoop-summit/

The game will be on ESPN2 at 3:00pm EDT on April 9th.

The world roster can be a bit hit or miss depending on whether players would have to miss any club games and the usual shoe politics also get in the way. Also, with more players being a part of the American system, the mystery is a bit lessened with Lauri Markkanen probably the only player who I am particularly interested in seeing in this context besides our guys. Speaking of which, putting Wenyen Gabriel on the USA team is a pretty disappointing choice in my opinion. I know that he is a proud American citizen (even if his FIBA eligibility would be a slightly different situation), but this seems like a move to try to prevent the World Team from being too good. Personally I would have gone even further and tried to get Adebayo on the World Team too (he is no longer going to be participating). I realize people might run that to its logical conclusion and suggest that Jabari and Jahlil should have been on the World Team. I am all for spreading the wealth in this situation though and we do seem to be getting reasonably good games every year and this one may be no different.

Sorry, awhom. Markkanen pulled out after being ill recently (http://www.scout.com/college/basketball/recruiting/story/1658055-ayton-froling-show-ability-at-hoop-summit).

Frank Jackson article (http://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2016/03/frank-jackson-to-don-first-usa-basketball-jersey-at-april-9-nike-hoop-summit.aspx):

“Every day, I try to get 600 to 700 shots up, whether that is from a gun or game shots,” he explained. “And with the season ending, I have started to lift again. I’ll lift in the morning, get my shots up after that, and then later that evening, I’ll go to the gym again and do the same thing.”

Beyond the April 9 Nike Hoop Summit, Jackson has just a few months before he heads to Duke University, where he has signed a National Letter of Intent and will start summer school in July.

Marques Bolden article:

His performance in fact was good enough to earn him a spot on the 12-member USA Junior National Select Team for the 2016 Nike Hoop Summit that will be played at the Moda Center, and he thinks he knows what he will bring to the team.

“Just a physical presence inside and also being able to stretch the floor,” Bolden said of his skills. “That’s one thing I’ve been working on lately, is being able to stretch the floor. Also, I want to be able to become one of the leaders on the team, on and off the court. Talking on the court, having my teammates’ back and just being there for my teammates.”

Jayson Tatum article (http://www.usab.com/news-events/news/2016/02/jayson-tatum-on-fourth-usa-roster.aspx):

Tatum attends the same high school that Beal did, Chaminade College Prep in St. Louis, Missouri, and he was a fan of Beal long before the rest of the country became aware of Beal’s talents.

“I’ve been watching Brad since I was in elementary school,” said Tatum. “He is like a big brother/mentor to me. He’s always helped me out, and I’m just excited to see how he has grown over the years, and he looks forward to me becoming a better player and person.”

Yeah, I saw that and was disappointed. Without Maker too now, they are scrambling with Azubuike in now, but I am not sure how excited I might be to see him. It should still be a good game. I wonder if it is an advantage for players who can play on either team to join the World Team because of extra practices and extra chances to impress NBA people.

Hopefully Frank gets some time at PG and/or does a lot of ball-handling just to see how he performs those things against this level of structured competition.

The U.S. has 6 guards on the roster:

PG Fox
PG Pritchard
CG Frank Jackson
CG Fultz
SG Ferguson
SG Langford

Fox probably will start at point. It's possible Frank will back him up ahead of 4-star Pritchard.

Other unit is Payton Pritchard, Markelle Fultz, Terrance Ferguson, Joshua Langford, Wenyen Gabriel & Marques Bolden at USA practice.

Will the first unit be Team USA's starting lineup?

Disappointed by the relative lack of tweets from journalists who attended USA practice. Hopefully that changes Thursday and Friday.

Did see this:

McDs Game wasn't accurate depiction of #Duke (https://twitter.com/hashtag/Duke?src=hash) commit Jayson Tatum. He's been much better here. Shooting very well and getting to rim.

In case anyone was really concerned.

Also, FSU signee Jonathan Isaac was a stud today apparently. With Bacon back to pair with Isaac, Leonard Hamilton needs to make the tourney next year.

Thought Josh Jackson was in this? didn't see his name listed in the two practicing groups.

Excited to see this game. I've always like this event, just wish Harry was playing.

He's playing but I think they said he wasn't getting out there until today.

I've seen many reports that the USA is practicing hard, playing defense, and really focusing. They want to make up for the loss last year.

Saw on the Twitterverse that he is expected to announce for KU at the event. It would have been fun to see him at MSU. I'd like to see what Izzo can do with UK level talent. In my mind it would have been Duke v MSU in the Final Four, with each team playing better and better all season long.

Josh Jackson to KU would put the Jayhawks in the first tier with Duke and UK, imo. (Although I would put Duke first in that tier.)

Many consider him to be the best player in the class (http://www.nbadraft.net/2017mock_draft), so even though ESPN had him ranked 3rd for the McDonald's game, the consensus rankings might place him first (http://247sports.com/Season/2016-Basketball/CompositeRecruitRankings?InstitutionGroup=highscho ol). We'll see what the final RSCI says.

In any case, he's a stud and will give Kansas arguably the best starting perimeter in college in Sr-Mason, Jr-Graham, Fr-JJackson.

I didn't know much about JJ but came away impressed. In his interviews he said that all he cared about was winning (cliche) and I think that showed in the All-star game. He bothered Tatum by playing defense. I like that attitude from him, i'm gonna have fun but we got to win first.

Some thoughts from Rivals' Eric Bossi (https://basketballrecruiting.n.rivals.com/news/hoop-summit-usa-is-loaded) on the first two practices. He says he would start Frank and Jayson at the 2 and 3.

Says Bossi:

Jackson is a glue guy who can score and his decision-making is impressive. Tatum is a big scorer who can help board from the wing.

Many things in that article that would interest Duke fans.

Will save my thoughts until he signs (which I am not confident of, btw). I will say that if he DOES show up in Lawrence, and Svi/Diallo both come back, that's a really really REALLY intriguing game in MSG this fall.

Looks like Terrance Ferguson has bumped Frank from the presumed first unit. (Or maybe they're just taking a look at another combination and Frank will be back in tomorrow).

Interesting video with Harry Giles from the Hoop Summit on Scout:

He says the rehab is going well .. also says he'll enroll at Duke for the first summer session, starting in May.

Short highlight package from practice. The highlights don't really start until about 30 seconds in. Lots of Tatum, a little bit of Jackson.

The biggest thing I'll be watching for today is how well Jayson moves the ball and plays a team game with other talented teammates in a game that matters.

As others have noted, Jayson in high school had an iso-heavy playing style, reminiscent of his hero Kobe Bryant. How well he blends that style with Team USA's offense is possibly a preview of how well he'd blend it with Duke's offense.

I don't expect Frank to get much time at PG. From practice reports I've read, I think Fox and Fultz will handle most of those duties. Nevertheless, I'll be interested to see how well he can torch the World Team's defense with his shooting and driving.

And, of course, hopefully both of our guys defend well.

Starters ended up being: Fox-Ferguson-Tatum-Gabriel-Allen.

2nd unit: FJackson-Fultz-JJackson-Isaac-Bolden

Tatum is a long wing defender that will get deflections and steals by playing the passing lanes. Then, he's a monster in transition.

USA is wiping the floor with the World, who still haven't scored with 4 minutes left in 1Q. Huge difference in quality between this class and last year's, which lost this game.

So-so game from Frank so far. A couple of misses around the rim. He DID mostly play PG for his unit, although Fultz was better at creating for teammates. Frank's defense at the point was good.

Struggling with his shooting big time. Looks to be a decent but not an elite shooter from deep. Then again this game is so boring - he may be falling asleep. He seems to have good vision and can run the point.

I don't think we should read too much into Frank's (or Ferguson's!) shooting skills based on one game. Small sample size and all.

Personally, I'm most interested in how FJ, JT (and MB) look on defense. I generally liked what I saw today on that end, and I like the reports that came out of practice.

Box Score (http://www.usab.com/news-events/live-stats/2016/04/usa-vs-world-select-team-2016.aspx)

Nice efficient offensive day from Tatum, which I was hoping to see. He was the second-leading scorer but he didn't hunt his shot too much at the expense of Ferguson, who was having a great day. Great team play by Tatum.

In contrast, Frank had a rough offensive day (after apparently shooting lights out all week). His two turnovers were travels when starting a drive, not judgement-based turnovers. Just gotta keep the pivot foot down a split second longer.

Both were good on defense, by eye test.

Tatum is really good from the line. That may be one of his greatest strengths.

Bodes well for his improvement from 3-land. Always nice if there is a 'cannot leave him unguarded from 3' element to help his drive to mid-range and in. We, obviously, saw a lot of that from BI this year.

Bolden played the least of any player on Team USA. Style of play? He didn't show too much, other than he runs well.

I had heard a lot about Ayton for the world team and was not impressed. He does have nice size and is only a junior, so maybe it was just a bad game for him.

Remember that some of the guys had already spent lots of time playing together for USA basketball. This was Bolden's first USA basketball appearance (and Frank's, too), if I'm not mistaken. That makes a difference.

Heck, just this weekend I played in the first game of an adult league here in town. I hadn't met any of my teammates prior to the game. Many of them, however, had played pick up games together at the YMCA for awhile. I'm not that great of a basketball player or anything, but I'm good enough to play decently in s league like this. However, my lack of familiarity with my teammates made for a rough first game for me. I am confident that I'll play much better next weekend after we have a shootaround this week.
