Nice. I'll be excited to see your pics...Zion is way high on my list.
As for me, I'm at work today. It looks an awful lot like it did this time last week. No pics enclosed.

Zion NP is on our bucket list, hoping to make a 4-5 week cross country trip by auto shortly after retiring and we have (at least) 10-15 NP on our list during the journey.

Depending on how broadly "Southwest" is defined, you have a bunch of choices. In just the SW corner of Utah, though, Bryce Canyon is high on the list (stay at Ruby's Inn, if you can). Cedar Breaks is also very scenic, in a very different way. Glen Canyon Dam, which is where the Colorado River is dammed to form Lake Powell (before it flows southward to the Grand Canyon) is right on the border with Utah at Page, Arizona. Panguitch Lake is pretty, with great trout fishing, but it is probably still snowy or frozen at that elevantion this early in the year. And St. George or Cedar City are both solid bases-of-operation for day trips to any of those places.

Regrettably, I think all of Utah's craft breweries are up north . . . .

[Edit: Seems I'm wrong. Check out Zion Canyon Brewing Company (http://www.zionbrewery.com/) in Springdale, UT.]

Enjoy!

Well, I could have sent pics of the snow covering the ground here in AVL this morning, but it had already melted by the time of the original post. I could send some pics of the golf course I will be playing on this Wednesday when the teperatures will be in the mid 70's here, however. (Seriously, pics of such a beautiful place would be appreciated, and know you must be having an exceptional experience.)

There are some really cool caves outside of Page, sandstone carved out by seasonal flooding. Really pretty. {Sorry, pictures sideways}

forgot to mention that when we arrived in Vegas, we stopped for pizza at some place. I was trying to get some napkins from a dispenser next to an elderly couple and said, "excuse me"...

the gentleman turned around and said, "well i guess so since you're a duke fan" (was wearing my hoodie)

I said, "you guys duke fans?" he said, "well, since luke kennard is our neighbor, i guess we oughta be!"

small world....

I'm hoping by "Colorado" you mean (in part) Grand Junction. Colorado National Monunment is right there, and it's got a funky downtown area. Plus, it's the heart of Colorado's wine country, with a fair number of vineyards to visit in the vicinity. And Bin 707 is a *fantastic* restaurant, with local wine & beer selections.

If Moab/Arches NP is on the itinerary, Red Cliffs Lodge is fantastic (either to stay or to just grab something to eat & enjoy the scenery by the river).

I'd give you specific Colorado instructions, but there are so many things to see and to consume that I'm sure you'll be fine. Since you escaped craft beer hell aka the liquor laws of Utah, you should be quite happy, and baked goods are easy to come by. If you swing by Denver, let your local DBR tour guide know.

If you think Utah liquor laws are bad now, you should have seen them 10-15 years ago when everything was 3.2% and you needed a club "membership" to buy a mixed drink. I went skiing/boarding with our son ~3 years ago at Park City and we found the craft beer selection to be fine with Squatters, Wasatch, Uinta and Epic beverages, several of which were ABV of 8% and higher. But that's another thread ;) .

Epic opened a brewery and tap room here in Denver, so the lesson, as always, is that the beer is better up here.

I can't keep up with the beer thread, but I wish I could.

You're welcome to jump in any time. Or from time to time. Really no need to keep up. You're thoughts would be a breath of fresh hops, or something like that. ;)

so amazing. pics later.

in southwest for the next 9 days.

If you have good weather, the north rim of the Grand Canyon is a different animal than the south rim. Not too far from Zion, if memory serves. Zion is one of my favorites though. This time of year it must be blessedly quiet too.

Been almost ten years since I traveled through the southwest. If breweries are you jam, Flagstaff has some lovely ones.

I got stuck stuck stuck in a snowstorm in Flagstaff almost exactly 19 years ago to the day. Spring break trip that ended up in a blizzard.

Zion was amazingly quiet, until the class of 5th graders arrived at the upper emerald pool, then, the scandinavian brothers rode the tram back to springdale.

visited the lower antelope canyon today...took about 1000 pics....drove up to Cortez colorado through a wicked sand/tumbleweed storm....ate lunch @ The Blue Coffee Pot.

mrs pie booked us in one of the coolest motels EVER called the Retro Inn (https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60857-d578198-Reviews-Retro_Inn_at_Mesa_Verde-Cortez_Colorado.html)....it's so awesome...

A few years ago we did the Capital Reef, Zion, Bryce trio....one of the highlights (we were just about the only people there in very early May) was
coming upon a huge herd of pronghorns, more than a hundred, cavorting about. They run faster than DeVon Edwards. Have you seen any?
p.s. yeah, Utah, not your top drinking state. Plans must be made!

We were out that way just last yr.
Came into Colorado Springs and camped at Meuller State Park, we did the cog rail up Pikes Peak. where upon reaching the top I was hung-over but without the fun drinking part. Altitude sickness was un-fun. All was better when we descended but being UP was misery.

We saw Mesa Verde, Canyonlands, Arches and Great Sand Dunes National Parks. Most of it looked like every Coyote and roadrunner cartoon ever created.

I MOST enjoyed Royal Gorge, Black Canyon of the Gunnison and rafting the Arkansas River in Colorado at Browns Canyon. In Rocky Mountain National Park we saw Bullwinkle like 8 feet from our camper. It was good but not Yellowstone and Grand Tetons good.

I learned I don't like desert much and prefer the places where the larger wildlife are.

How was Mesa Verde? We are going there next month and I read where a fair amount of the park is closed. (But we still want to go.)

Also hitting Monument Valley and then up to Moab (Arches and Canyonlands). If you have any suggestions about those places, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks.

FWIW -
We hit in Mesa Verde, Canyonlands and Arches in June of last yr.
For my personal tastes - I liked MV quite a bit. It was very interesting and educational. Its all about the water. who's got it, who doesn't and what you will do to keep it.
Canyonlands and Arches reminded me of every RoadRunner cartoon I've ever seen. The rugged beauty was good. Overwhelming really.. but for me grating. I'm just not a desert person as I learned on the trip. Moab has an excellent brewery and public swimming pool. A nice little oasis.

Rafting Browns Canyon, Royal Gorge and Black Canyon of the Gunnison were highlights for me.

If you wander towards northwest New Mexico, there is also good rafting on the Rio Chama. Really pretty canyons, very colorful. Cool petroglyphs too IIRC.

For the Arches/Canyonlands/Moab portion, suggest you consider staying at Red Cliffs Lodge (http://redcliffslodge.com/). It is maybe 10 minutes outside of downtown Moab, on the back-side of the cliffs from Arches, and right alongside the Colorado River.

Mesa Verde was really nice, except, we had snow the night before we went which made me VERY uneasy driving through.. once we hit some of the higher elevations and the rental car slipped a few times, we turned back around.....

got some amazing pics tho....

we stayed at The Retro Inn (https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60857-d578198-Reviews-Retro_Inn_at_Mesa_Verde-Cortez_Colorado.html) in Cortez the night before.....each room is outfitted for a vintage year.....we had 1979..
