Duke won their season opener last night 17-6 over High Point:

The next game is Sunday at 1 pm against Lehigh. I was planning to take my grandson to the game, but it is too cold for me. In the highlights linked above, Jack Bruckner (#8) lights it up with four goals.

Impressive performance in the opener. The Panthers hung in until late in the second quarter, but the Blue Devils dropped the hammer, holding them scoreless for over 20 minutes and breaking the game open with a 9-0 run, including a 6-0 third quarter.

The offense was running on all cylinders. When High Point forced Myles to his left, he scored left-handed. When they made him a feeder, he responded with four assists, including one to Matheis in the second quarter that was really ridiculous. Class found holes in the defense for four goals. Guterding had a quiet night, but he did a lot of the dirty work around the cage, setting screens and winning run-outs after missed shots. The second midfield, sophomores Jake Seau and David Gill and Freshman Brad Smith, was pretty awful in the first half (no shots and four turnovers), but calmed down after halftime; they created some good opportunities for Smith, who was stoned twice by HP's Zach Tuell (who was pretty good in his first start, notwithstanding giving up 17).

The defense was eye-opening. High Point has a dangerous offense, featuring attackmen Dan Lomas and Matt Thistle, but Duke really clamped down. As Coach Danowski mentioned post-game, the communication on defense was much improved over last year; slides were timely and crisp, with almost none of the over-extension and over-aggressiveness that hurt us so often last year (OK, van Raaphorst make a freshman mistake on Thistle's goal, but that happens, and otherwise he looked good). Dunne did an excellent job on Lomas, and Pelton hoovered up six GBs. The SSDMs, Zenker, Van de Ven, and freshman John Prendergast, were fantastic; HP couldn't get anything going from up top.

Special teams were excellent. The EMO unit went 3-for-3, while the man-down defense held HP to 1-for-6. Kyle Rowe went 13-20 on faceoffs, and played a big role in the third-quarter run. Danny Fowler made all the saves you expect him to make and a couple you don't, including robbing Lomas from eight yards out in the slot on a man-down chance.

Thanks for the nice review...glad to hear about the defense.....it just wasn't good enough last year for us to contend. Should be a fun team to watch this year...
