View Full Version : ACC Tournament Speculation - what seed will Duke earn?

Ok, so it is too early to project, and we will know more after each and every game is played, but it is interesting to consider where Duke will finish the regular season and the subsequent placement for the ACC tourney. Why? Because some (most?) of us would still like to win the ACC Tournament and be crowned official champion.

At 5-4, we are in 8th place currently. We do not want to be 8th (or lower) as the new and improved mega conference that the ACC has become would require 4 wins in 4 days to win the title. That seems a stretch for the 6 (or 7?) man team we are now. Of course Jefferson remains a wild card.

So finishing in the top 4 would be desirable, requiring "only" the traditional 3 wins to win the title.

Given the Louisville post season ban, it becomes a bit more doable. Poof...one obstacle out of our way(not withstanding actually needing to beat them next week).

As of now, at 5-4, we are one game behind the 2 teams that are tied for 4th place (Pitt and Miami are 6-3) and we are also 1/2 game back of ND (6-4).
In other words, we need to pass all three teams to reach #4 seed. (Or have one of the top 3 take a tumble).

To our benefit, 6 of our last 9 games are at home.
To our detriment, we play 4 games against the top 2 teams in the league (UNC, Louisville).

So, I wonder what our chances of obtaining a top 4 seed in the ACC Tourney might be. Thoughts?

After we win our remaining games, all it will essentially take is for the cheaters to lose one of their remaining games against decent ACC competition to finish first. (Yes, UVa and Miami will need to lose as well.)

I love the ACC Tournament and definitely desire to see Duke win the conference championship. Here is a link to the tournament bracket:

http://raycomsports.com/sports_labs_docs/m-baskbl/2016_mbb_bracket.pdf

Seeds 1 through 4 receive a double bye and have to win three games (Thursday/Friday/Saturday) to win it all.
Seeds 5 through 10 receive a bye and must win four games (Wednesday/Thursday/Friday/Saturday) to win it all.
Seeds 11 through 14 must win five games (Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday/Friday/Saturday) to win it all.

With Louisville ineligible to participate, the path to a Top 4 finish and double bye is one team easier. With nine games remaining, we are one game behind Miami, Clemson and Virginia who are all 6-3 in the conference. Carolina is three games ahead of us at 8-1. A Top 4 finish is achievable with Step #1 being a victory over State today.

UVa and Miami play head-to-head, each plays UNC, and Miami plays Louisville. Let's cheer for an undefeated Duke finish (which would give us the tiebreaker over UVa), UVa wins over Miami and UNC, and a Louisville or UNC win over Miami. That would give us the de facto 1 seed!

Yes, I realize that is a very unlikely scenario, mainly based on our chances of going undefeated. But dare to dream!

Nice win against State puts us at 6-4, tied with ND and Pitt for 6th place in the ACC (5th for ACC Tourney seed without Louisville).
Now the 4 game stretch....

Well that was quick!

But of course we lose a tie breaker with ND, Clemson, and Miami...all clustered with us.

We will be alone in 5th in about 90 minutes.
