I remember that game with such clarity- I don't recall ever laughing so hard at a sporting event.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Apparently Michael Phelps made a cameo in Arizona State's curtain of distraction, yep, you guessed it, in his speedo.

We all know who the real Speedo guy is.
A nod and tip of the hat to our original Speedo Guy where ever he may be pastoring (Tennessee?) these days.

I didn't think Phelps' distraction curtain was meant as derivative of Grand Old Speedo guy.

I mean, yeah he was in a Speedo but he also had all that Gold dangling.

I think that was the point, not the Speedo.

(daggoneit, I wish my abs ever looked that good, and so does she...)

If you step forward, no pictures please! ;-)

(That was darn funny back in the day, kudos)

I think of it as an homage to the original Speedo guy.

There was a previous thread on this last season. (http://forums.dukebasketballreport.com/forums/showthread.php?35504-The-Legacy-of-Speedo-Guy)

This video was posted in there that shows what happened to Speedo guy.

Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley said Phelps "made a major contribution to the game."

The Speedo Guy has to be one of the funniest fan interactions of all time... I laugh every time I see it.

I took a good friend -- a sports-minded New Yorker who is very hard to impress -- to that UNC game. we were seated in Section 5, with a very good view of the Grad section and Speedo Guy.
As we left the game, which Duke won, I asked, "Well, what did you think? Good?" After a moment, he replied: "Good?? It was OVER the top! Never seen a game like that in my life!"
He still talks about that game, and today, is delighted that Lance Thomas is playing very well for his beloved Knicks.

In the conversations I've had with Arizona State students, most agree that Speedo Guy was the impetus for the Curtain of Distraction.

So, yeah, I'd imagine this is a friendly homage to the original.
