Duke women's soccer defeats Stanford in PKs to reach the final four. The Duke keeper played a great game and stoned two Stanford kickers during the shootout to lead the team to the win.

E.J. Proctor made two saves in the penalty shootout to lead Duke past Stanford, 3-2 on PKs, in the quarterfinal of the NCAA women's soccer championship. The game ended 1-1 after two overtimes.

Duke will play FSU in the national semifinals next Friday in Cary. The Seminoles blasted Texas A&M, 5-0. The other semi will pit Rutgers, which beat UVa 7-6 on PKs, against the winner of today's Penn State - West Virginia match.

After midnight, we gon' let it all hang out

The Duke women's soccer team beat Stanford tonight on the Cardinal home field in penalty kicks 3-2 to advance to the final four next weekend in Cary where they will face Florida State. The game ended tied 1-1 after regulation and 2 OTs. THis is a amazing accomplishment given that Duke finished 8th in the tough ACC. Congrats coach Church and team.

Helluva run here by the Blue Devils, out of the freakishly difficult ACC. Keep it goin', Coach Church!

This has been such a fun season to watch, and I agree that the future is extremely bright with a young team (and another year of Christina Gibbons!). EJ was unflappable the whole game, and I loved the last PK, when she saved the kick from Stanford's keeper... fabulous ending to a well-played game.

Here's hoping semi-home field advantage helps the Devils vs. FSU!

It was a great game to watch in person. It was a sellout crowd at Stanford and a lot of fun. Part of the reason for the sellout is that their stadium is pathetic. Honestly it should not be allowed for use in an event of this magnitude. At a minimum capacity should be 5,000 and there should be bathroom facilities within the stadium.

The team certainly will not be intimidated by Florida State after outplaying them in a draw during the regular season. They will need to be a bit sharper when they get possession to keep the pressure off the defense.

Note of caution, FSU in that game was missing a number of their best players who were with the national team at that time. They are the defending national champs.

From your perspective, did Duke score in the first overtime? On the Stanford video feed, it sure looked like that ball was over the line.

Full strength FSU is scary, but I have to think that playing any configuration of their team tough gives us something to work with. If they had beaten us shorthanded, it would be a more difficult mental hurdle to overcome.

We had a bad angle on that. The keeper's body was between us the and ball. The Duke parents and their compete non-bias were convinced that it was in.

I wonder about the Stanford shot from a corner that looked goal-bound. We were way too far away to have any idea of how close that got.
