The Duke men’s swim and dive team won the Nike Cup invitational, which concluded yesterday and was hosted by UNC. Both UNC and NC State competed, along with several other schools. For those who do not follow swimming, in contrast to a dual meet between two schools, an invitational is held over several days and follows the format of the conference champion meet in February. Multiple teams compete.

To provide a little historical perspective on yesterday’s results: the UNC men’s team leads the series with Duke 71-3 and the Duke men have not defeated UNC in a dual meet since 1939. The Duke men have historically been a non-scholarship team, although I am not sure whether a few scholarships have been funded in the last couple of years.

On the women’s side, the Duke women led entering the final day of the Nike Cup yesterday, but finished second to UNC. The UNC women are currently ranked second nationally. Duke has fielded a women’s swim team since 1973 and its dual meet record against UNC is 0-37. However, the women’s team became a funded sport at Duke several years ago and, if it does not currently have the full complement of NCAA scholarships available, it will in the near future.

A link to the GoDuke story on the Nike Cup appears below. This year’s dual meet with UNC is at Duke on Saturday, January 30 at 11:00 a.m. at the Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion (fondly referred to as the “Tap”). There could be some history made that day.

Also, Duke Women's Soccer advanced to the Elite 8 with a win over Florida. Duke is the #3 seed and UF was the #2 seed.

"The Blue Devils (13-5-4) move on to next play at No. 1 seed Stanford Friday, Nov. 27 at 10 p.m. (PT) in Stanford, Calif."

If I'm reading that right, 10 p.m. PT would be 1:00 a.m. ET correct? Hope our girls can stay awake...
