Back again.

From last year: Every year we get upset threads and then jinx the underdog. This year, let's try something different.
Any time we see an upset brewing, say Bobby Hurley's Buffalo squad taking on some Wildcats, we talk about field hockey, or beer, or gardening.
Of course, as with the observer effect suggests that simply one's awareness is enough to jinx the whole dang enterprise.

I'm going to skip the beer convo and I'm not a hockey fan. I'm a runner, but with a bum foot. As it happens, late middle-aged/early fossils should not jump off the top of retaining walls. For the short term, I'm not a runner, I'm a Rider.

Um, ironic choice in field hockey since Duke field hockey lost to the Heels in the NCAA semifinals today. That was "supposed" to happen according to rankings, but still....

I'd done better to bet on extreme weather, a la Hurricanes. Still, it's a fun thread. There was one team in particular that it worked well for last year, though. And we did have the good sense to lock last year's right after the Final Four games.

I think the Hurricanes were technically favored in that game.

By Pomeroy, yes. By ranking, the size of the thumping is impressive. Have no idea what the betting line might be.

The MD game was more interesting. Rider was up about 10 with 11 minutes to go. I think that was right before I reintroduced the thread.

Pretty sure it is not really your fault, though I can see why you might be feeling a little guilty. Sadly, it's not unusual for a team that gets off to a great start despite being severely overmatched in talent to run out of steam late in the game....

I remember seeing Miami -2.5, so I think the betting line was for Miami. Still, the margin of victory was quite impressive.

Yep...took a blocking call on one end and a charge call on the other against Oakland back-to-back to give MSU the two possession lead with a minute or so left in overtime. I'm not sure about the block call on Oakland that gave MSU the lead there at the end. The charge was ok, though the MSU player acted like he got hit by a truck.

MSU is going to have a bit of a difficult time out of conference. Their's is the only conference I've seen that is still allowing a lot of contact (football-esque) by the defense. Their inability to adjust to officiating was really evident.

I have no idea why Oakland wasn't more aggressive in taking it inside to draw more fouls on the Spartans in the second half. They had two guys fouled out, and four guys with four by the end of the game. At the rate Oakland was hitting FTs, MSU would have to choose between matador defense and taking their lumps at the line with the clock stopped.

Agree -- really would be nice if we had a simple thread that alerted to interesting games without the silly puns and cryptic messages.

I said it last season, but it bears repeating. This is the best thread on DBR. I don't know what thread would be second, but it's a distant second.

That said, you have to keep up for the thread to work at all. Its only use is "hey, this game is on right now and it could become verrrrrry interesting." It makes no sense to read through the thread after the fact. It's too disjointed, and often there is no resolution. I posted "Pauley wanna crack another Wildcat team?" a few days ago, and did not follow up with the outcome: Arizona (like Kentucky) lost at UCLA. But the resolution is irrelevant. Maybe the upset happens, or maybe it doesn't.

I don't get all of the references either. If I'm late to the thread, I don't bother to figure them out. And that's probably the lesson here: don't bother. There are a number of threads I don't care about on DBR. For example, while I am neither for or against beer, I have no interest in discussing it. We've had 2,958 posts to the Presidential race thread from February to December, a time when the only valid answer to the poll question is a stronger-worded variation of "To heck with you, it's not 2016 yet." And I have no idea why people are still posting to the current thread on the UNC scandal. If something important happens, I'll probably hear about it elsewhere, and even if I don't, DBR will tell me: the mods will close that thread and make a new one.

So here's what I do. I go to the Forum Actions dropdown menu, and click "Mark Forums Read." Instant clean slate. Then any new posts will be really new when you click the "New" button next to the thread title.

I get the sarcasm, but there have been posters here who got legitimately angry when someone "jinxed" an upset in the making.

Sure, but that was in the olden era of 2013-2014, when people would start a new upset alert thread that seemingly never came to fruition. We'd all be quietly watching UNC losing to, say, Georgia Tech, and then someone would post a thread about it and immediately reverse the fortune. It's the equivalent to talking about a no-hitter in baseball. Or like I said in this failed upset alert thread (http://forums.dukebasketballreport.com/forums/showthread.php?32425), "It's like firing an arrow at the pitcher throwing the no-hitter." These threads (this one and its predecessor) emerged as the fun alternative to that. Sometimes it doesn't work, but its success percentage is way better than the upset alert threads were.

And as for the idea that silly message board posts have no impact on real life sports games, are you honestly going to stand in the way of us trying to ensure that Carolina fans absorb every ounce of the pain they so richly deserve?

This is not an exclusive duality.

The jinx thread is clearly tongue-in-cheek humor and attempts at wit.

For straight discussion, I would again suggest the "what are you watching tonight" thread as a perfect place to post "UNC is down big to State right now" or whatever.

Personally, I do not believe in jinxes but enjoy this thread immensely. The only thing that annoys me is bulletin board material about upcoming Duke games (like guaranteeing we'll beat some team by 20) because those things can influence the outcome of the game if picked up by the other team.

02-01-2016, 09:29 PM
That was a slugfest. I enjoyed the game, just not the outcome.

Two strong teams probing and testing each other with the ball against good defense.

Louisville made mistakes, but they also made plays. Winning plays. They finished shots and the contested possession plays. Nobody gave them anything, they took that win at home.

UNC really struggled with Lee's strength and athleticism. That kid is a player.

The Heels didn't finish at the rim enough, lots of shots rimmed out, and they made some untimely...mainly mental... mistakes. Both defensively and with passing the ball.

They just have to play better to expect to win a game like that on the road.

There's still clearly some confidence issues shooting and scoring the ball for UNC. The rim seemed awful tight again tonight for them. I do think it got better than the past few games so hopefully they get out of that funk soon.

I also like how Roy coached this game. He was tactical with the bench and had them in position to win all night against a good team on the road. Players gotta make plays at some point.

Didn't see the game so wondering...did uncCheat's comeback coincide with Roy's exit?

Might be time to Duck and cover. Or not cover, as the case may be.

The guy from Crabapple Cove always hated that question.

The day is going awfully well, and turtle soup might be nice given the gray weather here.

Do you pair red wine or white with terrapin?

Maybe Badger pee would be better.

If that's my option, I might opt for pork chops in sauerkraut.

Not that I don't like trying new foods, but Badger pee might be just a teeny bit too far from my comfort zone. :)

So far today, eight ranked teams have lost, and it's certain to be at least nine before the evening is over (somebody is going to lose the Texas - Iowa State game).

I do loves me some carnage.

Iowa looks to be getting mauled by some lions and the Flyers crashed against St. Joes, but who cares. Only one game counts tonight.
