Looking for a specific concert, circa 1984, did The Bangles or another all-female band play about then? Thx in advance. GO DUKE!!

The Bangles opened for Cyndi Lauper IIRC. I was a volunteer usher at the show. I think it was Fall '84 or spring '85.

Billy Idol headlined in the fall of '84, not sure if he was an opener earlier though.

Not seeing Dave Matthews Band in Cameron on April 7, 1995. Toward the conclusion of my second year of law school (just after "The Back Surgery Season" had mercifully come to a conclusion). The song that eventually became #41 (then entitled "41 Police") debuted that night.

Damned first marriages . . . . .

Slightly off topic - but one of the most awesome concerts I have ever attended was Simon and Garfunkel in the Indoor Stadium (not yet Cameron). It must have been 1967 or 1968 (the years blend together now). They sat on tall bar stools at mid court and sang with only a bassist to accompany them.
The close harmony of their records was completely there live. They just blew my mind.

As long as we're off topic, I had to jump in and say that Simon and Garfunkel's concert roughly fifty years ago (I'm fuzzy on the date too  ) also is one of the most memorable concerts I ever attended.
What stands out to me to this day is when Simon said he wanted everyone to appreciate what a great voice Garfunkel had - and then Garfunkel did the next number a cappella.
You're correct in remembering the minimal accompaniment which was impressive enough, but that a cappella number was just amazing.
Thanks for reminding me :)

Add me to the list for that one. It was pretty early in my freshman year: Fall of '82. Met a girl from Roxboro. That was a good night.

I remember several friends/classmates going to this concert (I was in high school at the time).

In searching for when the very exciting Blues Traveler/Spin Doctors mega concert was in the early 90s, I came across this old thread on the same concert topic:

If my memory is correct (always a dubious proposition!), CIS was one of the larger venues for concerts in the Piedmont area in the 60's and 70's and Duke was able to attract quite a few of the top bands to play there. There was Bruce Sprinsteen, weeks after he was simultaneously on the covers of Time and Newsweek (in the days when that was a BIG deal). The Grateful Dead; Boston (after their debut album went multi-platinum) - God, that was a loud concert in a relatively small space. I still think my hearing is affected. And others that I now forget.

Want to talk about hearing loss? Think Wet Willie, Journey and ELO (Extremely Loud Orchestra:rolleyes:) in the Greensboro Coliseum in March, 1976, followed by Springsteen the next night at CIS on his Born to Run Tour. My hearing never recovered and I didn't attend any rock concerts for probably 20 years after that until my wife bought me birthday tix for (her) us to see Steve Miller and the Doobie Brothers in 1996 or 1997. Now get off my lawn:rolleyes: .

That was it! OPK was correct about Idol headlining.

I remember hearing the ads for REM and them saying REM with 10,000 Maniacs. I assumed they meant the Crazies. ;)

The only show I saw there was Echo & The Bunnymen, the other shows I saw in Page. (Including a band nobody ever heard of before, Jane's Addiction, opening for Love & Rockets. Jane's has been one of my favorite bands ever since.)

(Also saw a guy that went to school down the road at unc a few times in Page. Mike Cross was always amazing.)

The Boss was originally scheduled to play CIS in Spring semester 1975 but the show was cancelled. Can't remember whether it was Bruce, the promoter, or something else.

And the Go-Go's were really weirded out that no one reacted to what they said from stage. But they had it turned up so loud/distorted no one could understand! (Of course, a bunch of folks left after Flock of Seagulls finished; that's another story.)

A fun night, none-the-less. Mickie took the baffles out of the rafters about the same time - she wanted more noise from the students, concerts be damned!

I wish Prince would play Cameron...

Holy moly for you DC folks, this Sat 11/21 George Clinton and the Parliment Funkadelic with the Funk Ark at the Tally Ho in Leesburg, VA.

We're going to the Old Ebbit Oyster Riot earlier that afternoon but I'm thinking I should carry that funk beat out the toll road to the Lburg in order to board the Mothership that night. Can I get a witness?!
Seriously, how much funk can a body endure?

Not sure it's possible for a more 1993 concert to exist.

This was only a couple weeks after Hurley's Duke career ended... and now I'm thinking of how sad I was after that Duke-Cal game.

1992-93 was kind of a melancholy year all around at Duke. That was also the year of Ricky Lamont Coffin (http://www.nytimes.com/1992/10/28/us/gunman-holding-hostages-is-fatally-shot-at-duke-u.html) and Amy Geissinger (http://www.greensboro.com/federal-bus-investigations-called-after-durham-death/article_53c178f3-acc7-51a5-842f-01d7918bc087.html).

I was there! I went to see the Flock of Seagulls but the Go-Go's were fun too.

I also remember Neil Young and the Shocking Pinks playing in the the fall of '83.

I actually got paid to work the Go-Go's and the Dead shows in Cameron. My job was to keep people on the floor from going backstage. Completely forgot about Flock of Seagulls opening; my roommate at the time was a big Go-Go's fan. (we didn't last past the semester).

Everybody gave Neil a hard time back then for that rockabilly record, but that show was phenomenal. No one really came to hear the set with the Shocking Pinks, but those musicians were first-rate and they blew the roof off. Neil also played Carmichael the year before. I recall he said something like "I hear you have a pretty good basketball team here" and there was a chorus of boos from the Dukies and the State fans in attendance, which caught Neil by surprise. I had tapes of both shows, plus a handful of Dead shows on cassette that were in a travel case stolen from my car a few years later. (AOOGAH AOOGAH! GEEZER ALERT! GEEZER ALERT!! THIS IS NOT A DRILL! REPEAT, THIS IS NOT A DRILL!!) Alas, a couple of efforts to see what Neil shows can be found online were unsuccessful.

And others: Mike Cross, Lionel Hampton, Wynton Marsalis in "PaIge", Chick Corea in Duke Gardens....

Some of my favorites from 90-94... Mostly in Page:

Lemonheads
Big Head Todd
Soul Asylum
Blues Traveler
Widespread Panic
the Samples
Dillon Fence (the coffee house and cats cradle numerous times)
DMB (cats cradle for maybe $10!)
The Connells (cats cradle)

Heck, I remember seeing the Dave Matthews Band for free once on the West Campus quad, circa 1991. I think it was for some fraternity event -- maybe Kappa Sig's Schoonerfest?

I had the same job on the right side of the stage for the Dead show and a few others. Good old Student Labor. We also worked rolling out all those brown mats to cover the floor the night before.

BTW - You can find sort of a list of Duke concerts here based on the records of the Major Attractions committee:

http://library.duke.edu/rubenstein/findingaids/uaduuma/

Some of them are false alarms of records when they were trying to book a show. For example, there is apparently a folder on an attempt to get The Police to play in 1983, but they never made it to Duke.

I worked the Black Crowes concert at Cameron and could not hear for two days afterwards. They should have given me earplugs instead of the godawful teal green STAFF shirt I had to wear.
