I figured it was time to start this, although it could very well become the Quinn Cook thread, especially if no veterans sign with the league.

Canton had some exhibition play on Saturday. Full stats are not available, but Quinn had 9 points in 9 minutes in one of the halves as the exhibitions are also time for those fighting to make the roster to try to prove themselves. His regular season starts this Saturday.

Lots of interesting stuff to pay attention to in the D League between now and the CBA negotiation. Some of the remaining holdouts have suddenly jumped on board and committed to starting their own teams so we are more or less down to 7 teams that have no plans announced.

Tyus was assigned to the D League. Since the Timberwolves do not have an affiliate, he was available to all of the teams. If no teams want a player, then the league forces him onto one of the teams that is not directly owned by a team. Tyus ended up with Idaho, which is Utah's affiliated team, but could not make it time for this game, so he will probably debut on Wednesday. It is always interesting with these teams with no affiliations. If they had an affiliate, they probably would have given him a few D League games much sooner. As for which teams want to take a player, there are some cases with pre-existing relationships, like when the Spurs pick up Hawks players. Sometimes you also have to wonder if a team is trying to scout a player for a possible trade fit.

Dahntay had 8 points in 18 minutes as Grand Rapids lost 105-92 to his old team Fort Wayne.

For me to tell a young man not to take money when it is offered is ridiculous. But from a pure basketball stand point , Tyus should have come back for his sophomore year. He would have been the premier point guard in college basketball this year, but I do understand how difficult it is to say no to money.

Does anyone know if Coach K encouraged him to leave ?.

If you are asking if he discouraged him from going, a la William Avery 15 years ago, I'd wager that never happens again - at least not publicly. Even though history proved K correct that he wasn't ready, I bet K wishes he could take that back. Not the high point of his career.

I assume any future announcements of a player going pro will be met with platitudes of encouragement and excitement, regardless of what words might be exchanged behind closed doors.

Tyus made a good call - it is very unlikely that his stock would have gone up.

If we are playing the "what if" game, I would rather consider if Justise would have been a number one pick this coming year instead of tumbling past a bunch of teamd that will regret their decicions last year.

Justise will have a very long and very well paid career in Miami as the successor to Duane Wade.

A few things about this post.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the only reason that Coach K's discouragement towards Avery's announcement was made public was because Avery's Mom opened her mouth to a Tarheel reporter. Coach K was recovering from surgery. I don't recall him making any public comments at the time about Avery not being ready.

Also, what would keep Justise from slipping in next year's draft if he had stayed? I suppose he could have showed a mid range game, but it was still ridiculous how far he dropped. I don't know why he did, but he left at a great time... his drop couldn't have been predicted.

First, thanks as always awhom111 for the D-league updates. Watching that highlight it was good to see Quinn playing so well but all I could think about is how weird it has to be to play in a small empty gym like that. I mean there weren't even stands much less fans. Contrast that with CIS and the Crazies and I bet sometimes Quinn walks off the court looks around, shakes his head and says "Is this really all there is to the D-league?". I hope it pays off for him in the end.

Different teams have different approaches. The ones on their own in smaller cities do try to get a crowd and some energy going. Some are treated much more as training exercises as you can see from the video above, where the Lakers put their affiliate in their own practice facility with minimal seating. To be fair, many places lack atmosphere compared to the big college places.

Quinn has a very important game tomorrow. It will be the opening game of the D League showcase on NBATV at 1:00pm ET. This tournament, in which all the teams in the league play two games, tends to be the only one that more high-ranked front office people see in person. A number of overseas teams will also be there, although they will be more heavily focused on post players as this is the time when the 12 teams in the Philippines are looking for players for the second tournament of the season (the first, which runs now, is only open to Filipinos). Today was the first day that 10 day contracts could be signed, so there are a couple teams that might be trying to find someone quickly.

The tournament itself is interesting as last season they used a foreign style cup format with the top 8 teams in a playoff and the rest of the teams being assigned opponents among each other. This year all teams play two games and the winner (since presumably multiple teams will win both games) will be the undefeated team with the highest net rating.

There is another Duke guy in the D League right now. Reporters are stating that it is for practice purposes only and he is not expected to play in any games there.

Thank you to those who take the time to help us follow our Duke BB alumni in the NBA, WNBA, D-League, Europe, and elsewhere around the world.

That said, what is the conventional wisdom as to the value of the D-league to the NBA? Based on the scores, it seems that defense is not valued. Yet, I am to understand that more than a few great scorers from the college ranks have failed to make a rotation in the NBA because they cannot / will not play defense. [frankly this surprised me, as I never found NBA to be very compelling basketball on the defensive end until playoff time. But several examples of offensive stars who either made it or not due to defense (JJ vs. Morrison, Jimmer)]

It seems to me that Europe might be better suited to really develop a player, but there's no reason the US D-league could not. It's just that those scores suggest they are there more for entertainment value than developmental work.

It seems to me that Europe might be better suited to really develop a player, but there's no reason the US D-league could not. It's just that those scores suggest they are there more for entertainment value than developmental work.

This is a debate that will rage on for a while.

As long as the money gap is as big as it is, the D League players will be doing everything that they can to get out of there as soon as possible. This will probably be addressed in the next CBA negotiation, but it is questionable whether the NBA players really have that as an issue that they care about enough to really increase the salaries. Some of the people who follow the league closely say that the league has declined in quality in recent seasons. The bench players in particular generally are not that great as it is hard to find people who will take both low pay and minimum exposure. Expansion, which seems to be continuing in the near future is further stretching out the talent pool.

European and other overseas basketball can develop players. I would point out that they are not intentionally developing players for the NBA. That means players are playing international systems and at the higher levels are expected to play in the existing role structure of elite European teams. Now that more teams are increasing their involvement in a D League team, more of them are running the identical offensive and defensive systems that the parent club uses. There are a few cases where the NBA team has had a short term need and signed a player playing for their affiliate instead of a player from another D League team that has been more individually impressive.

The D League continues to serve its purpose, including the ability to get young NBA players reps instead of keeping them on the bench. Now teams are using it like minor league baseball rehab assignments too. For a rookie who can afford it, the league is still a good option. It is good way to transition from the college life to the professional one without also forcing you to adjust to living in another country. Unproven rookies rarely get great first overseas gigs and as can be seen on this thread, the league's coverage makes it easy to create exposure for yourself once you think it is time to make the jump. Obviously there is no other way to instantly join an NBA team midseason without any obstacles.

Congrats to Quinn!!

Agreed. This is awesome. Obviously, most people would rather have a roster spot in the NBA than be the D-League Rookie of the Year. But this is a testament to everything that is terrific about Quinn that we saw in his performance at Duke last year--how he has grown into a player who works hard, makes good decisions, puts team first, and puts forth maximum effort whatever the situation and context.

It makes me very proud that Quinn is a Duke product.

Quinn's game on Tuesday at 7:00pm ET will be shown on ESPNU.

There are a lot of storylines going into this one as they take on Sioux Falls, the affiliate of the Heat, which set the D League record for wins this season.

After the last series, the Celtics got revenge for their affiliate Maine by signing Quinn's Canton teammate John Holland.

The Cavaliers are considering assigning Jordan McRae and Sasha Kaun to Canton in time for the game to give them some added depth. McRae of course torched Canton earlier in the season with Delaware which helped him get the callup in the first place.

Congrats to Quinn!!

Money quote -- "fair use," of course:

NEW YORK, April 11, 2016 – Canton Charge point guard Quinn Cook today was named the 2015-16 NBA Development League Rookie of the Year. The award, voted on by the league’s 19 head coaches, recognizes the first-year professional who most significantly contributed to his team’s success during the season.

Cook (6-2, 179, Duke) led the Charge to a 31-19 season by averaging team highs of 19.6 points and 5.4 assists to go with 3.9 rebounds in 43 games (37 starts). He shot 47 percent from the field and connected on a team-high 86 three-pointers.

Quinn Cook should have been drafted. The kid can shoot and never turned the ball over in college. I think at some point he will make an impact at the NBA level.

Leading the team with 25 points and 10 assists in 42 minutes was not for Quinn and Canton as they lost 112-104 to Sioux Falls and face elimination. Even two ringers on assignment was not enough against the team that set the D League wins record in the regular season.

That pretty much does it for this thread this season. As I always say, I hope that next season's thread is much shorter or not needed at all.

Thankyou Awhom! I always read this thread with great interest. I watched a bit of Quinn's game yesterday. The other team complete my overwhelmed them. Rather a disappointing end to the season and Quinn was clearly very frustrated!
