Just announced that Duke, Cincinnati, Penn State, and Rhode Island will be in this tournament up at Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut. Good opportunity for us in the northeast to see Duke outside of at Boston College

Is it just me, or is that a bummer of a field?

Thanks for the update.

Not just you. Not a good field at all. They either wrote a big ol' check or this is just the reality of having so many other teams in the conference to split tournaments with, or both

The #2 Devils played #3 Kentucky to open the season in the inaugural Tipoff Classic in 1979 in Springfield, MA, home of the Naismith Hall of Fame.

The Wildcats came back in the second half but Duke won in overtime. It was a big match up between Kentucky's highly touted freshman Sam Bowie and the G-Man.

If bummer means no marquee matchup that will drive big viewership, than we agree.

However, I think this is a nice group of teams for a young Duke team that will probably be trying to find its identity.

Dan Hurley's RI team has made huge strides in the last four years. The number four is important because the seniors have been on board since coach Hurley arrived. They are picked as the A-10 favorites. They are exactly the kind of team Duke will see in first weekend of the NCAA.

Cinncinati has had a very steady profile. They have made 6 straight ncaa tourneys. (1 more than unc) I expect the will continue to demonstrate the ability to be on the right side of the bubble. Another potential big dance opponent who will play a physical style of play that will test a young Duke team. If you want to know how Brandon Ingram will manage physical play, watch this potential matchup.

Penn st. Is the weakest of the opponents. I am interested in this game due to a young, highly regarded pg, tony Carr, who was rated as the best pg in PA. it was a huge get for penn st to land him. As a Duke fan living in PA, the potential Thornton vs Carr matchup is not a bummer at all.

Overall, if you view this tourney as an early practice for the first weekend of March madness you might find it more compelling.

Lots of analysis. Unfortunately, it's one year too early. These games will take place around November 2016.

Another reason why threads like this should always start with a link (http://mobile.sportingnews.com/article/4659545-2016-hall-of-fame-tipoff-classic-teams-announced-duke-penn-state-cincinnatti-uri).

Dang, you mean I need to rewrite this thing next year??
Good catch, brevity. Thanks for clearing up my blatant confusion.
Is it too late to move my post to the ymm, beer thread?

Sold my golf clubs for tickets to that game (plus some cash).
Great game!
No regrets!
