Just a short squib about Grandma. This is Lily Tomlin’s first starring role in 27 years; she is the title character. Lily’s fans will love her here.
This movie has some character roles which have not really been seen before. But let me say that the real stars are Marcia Gay Harden, Judy Greer, Laverne Cox, Elizabeth Peña (in her last role), and Sam Elliott, all playing Grandma's friends
Julia Garner (Martha Marcy May Marlene) plays the granddaughter; she is excellent. Furthermore there is a fine understated and uncredited performance, cameo style, by Lauren Tom.
I’ll provide no spoilers here except to say it is very funny and very bittersweet. Add: Small movie, made in 19 days for under $600,000.
Curiously, Lily’s long time writer, collaborator, partner and spouse, Jane Wagner, is nowhere to be seen. Both are getting on in years and that may explain it.
