Crowder is starting to show what he can do, and why Washington drafted him. The Redskins are doing joint practices with the Texans, and Jamison puts on a show...

As a Redskins fan I was happy that they drafted Crowder. I read a Redskins blog on ESPN's site and from what I can tell Crowder is doing just fine. In particular sounds like he runs good routes and does a good job of adjusting to the ball at speed (meaning he has the ability to make adjustments to the ball without slowing down). They are going to have him return some kicks as well. I hope he continues to impress.

DeSean Jackson apparently separated his shoulder at practice today. No details yet, but could favorably impact Jamison's snaps played and balls thrown his way. Either way, I too am glad to hear he has gotten off to a good start.

Heard an RGIII interview today as they're here in Richmond for camp and he was complimentary of JC, who I would think make the team-they need return help and WR back-ups/starters. DJ getting hurt helps JC. Local reporters covering camp were positive on JC, less so on RGIII. Just a little input from camp from me.

From that article:

His 50-plus-page thesis: "Coping with Injury: How High-Performance Athletes Mitigate the Biopsychosocial Consequences of Sports Injury."

Sounds like the paper due at the end of an AFAM class in Chapel Hill, no? :p

Proud that Kenny is getting a chance in Denver.

50+ page thesis? At unc-cheaters? Surely, you jest? Wait, I think I discovered the simple error on your part. You missed the decimal point and meant a 5.0 page paper. Or could that be a 0.5 page paper?

At unc, might there in fact be "paper" papers for which there is no tangible evidence? I would think so...not much of a leap from "paper" classes to "paper" papers, is there?

Here's the Washington Post's Mike Jones' point #5 in observations from the Redskins' preseason win over the Browns last night:

#5. Returns game remains shaky – The Redskins need Jamison Crowder (hamstring strain), who should serve as a legitimate upgrade on punt returns. Andre Roberts, who admitted last season he wasn’t fond of fielding punts, was ineffective Thursday, and fumbled at the end of one return. Cleveland cashed in that turnover for a touchdown. Chris Thompson got a few chances to field punts and he looked terribly uncomfortable. He muffed one, but luckily managed to scoop up the ball before defenders got there. He’s just not a natural there, despite his great speed. Crowder excelled in this capacity in college and should wind up landing this job full-time once healthy.

Let's hope Jamison returns to action soon.

I'm almost always up for a long draught. Perhaps #7965 from this page:

I'm not sure Crowder could field a punt very well after one however.

I missed the game last night while hosting a poker party, and failed to hit record on my trusty DVR :) Did anyone watch, and can you provide a recap on how the Dukies did in that game? I believe Crowder was going to be held out of the game with a hammy, correct? Did Cofield see any action? Laken I assume was getting reps for the Lions, how did he do?

Well technically yes. Best you can say is that he was alert and was at the right place at the right time to get the bounce off the intended receiver's hands.

Juwan Thompson has continued to be solid for the Broncos, and while he's been relatively certain to make their 53-man roster again this year, he may also have supplanted Montee Ball for third on the RB depth chart. Juwan got some good work in the second half last night, carrying the rock five times and catching three passes out of the backfield.

He capped the night with a powerful goal line touchdown (http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/0ap3000000518262/Juwan-Thompson-1-yard-touchdown) that won the game with two minutes left, then successfully converted the 2pt conversion on another run.

Juwan may be an active presence in short-yard situations for the Broncos this year. Hopefully Kenny Anunike can get healthy again (he had his knee scoped a couple weeks ago), because he has done nothing but turn heads here in Denver during his healthy camp and preseason moments, both last year and this year.

As a Blue Devil and Broncos fan, I hope the Denver front office continues to appropriately value the talent coming out of Durham. . .

Big news for Renfree, who really performed well in the pre-season. 26-36 for 237 yards with a TD and no INT. Competing 72% of your passes is a good thing.

I suspect Thad will catch on with some team, at least on the practice squad. He has shown he can be at least an ok NFL QB in the handful of games he has started over the past couple years.

Congrats to Kenny Anunike, who made the Broncos' 53-man roster!

Final Duke in NFL tally (really not final, still lots of potential for players to get picked up or signed to practice squads, etc.)

Kenny Anunike - Denver Broncos
Ross Cockrell - Pittsburgh Steelers
Jamison Crowder - Washington Redskins
Cooper Helfet - Seattle Seahawks
Sean Renfree - Atlanta Falcons
Vincent Rey - Cincinnati Bengals
Juwan Thompson - Denver Broncos
Laken Tomlinson - Detroit Lions

Takoby Cofield was cut by the Redskins. No cause for alarm; he was a non-drafted invite and many teams only keep one reserve OT on the active roster. He's likely to make their practice squad.
Thad Lewis was cut by the Browns, but teams are always looking for veteran practice-squad QBs. We'll see what happens. This is two years in a row that he has struggled in preseason games, though.
Matt Daniels was waived/injured by the Jags, which is a confusing designation that I've never quite understood. Daniels has had rough luck with injuries in the NFL, but if he heals quickly then he could be a practice squad candidate. He actually had a good preseason before getting hurt.
Isaac Blakeney was cut by the 49ers. He was never targeted in the preseason. It might be a stretch for him to play anywhere this year.

But hey, we have 8 definite NFL players this year, 4 of whom went undrafted, so all in all it's not a bad success rate! I'm excited to follow our guys this year.

Fingers crossed so hard they're starting to cramp.

Anunike is one of my all-time favorites. He had so many knee operations at Duke, he could probably perform one himself. Goes undrafted, hangs around on the practice squad, makes a big impression over the summer, gets hurt and just keeps hanging in there, working and studying and making it impossible for Denver to let him go.

Nobody deserves it more.

I love that the Broncos think a lot of him. This is a pretty good link to a more detailed AP article embedded that discusses the promise the Broncos see in Anunike, and the depth he provides an already stellar Broncos D.

"He hurt it at practice a couple of days after leading the Broncos with eight tackles, two QB hurries, a sack and a forced fumble in Denver's preseason win at Seattle, after which he called himself "a menace in the backfield.""

"No question. That's what I'm built for is pass rushing and getting after that quarterback," Anunike said. "Standing on the sideline, you can't do much of that. So it felt really good to get back out there with my teammates pass rushing and helping to stop the run."

Plus two points on a conversion. :)

And he had another nice gain on a screen pass that was called back for holding. The announcer commented on Crowder's quickness which was nice to hear even though the play didn't count.

Jamison Crowder stat line:

6 receptions for 45 yards
1 punt return for 10 yards

Jamison is getting it done so far! The Redskins might be a hot mess, but Crowder is being productive and dependable when called upon.

The Redskins are not a hot mess. Seems that way to most because all the press covers is RGIII. They had a pretty good offseason (did a good job signing solid players to the defense and had a decent draft). Are they 'good'? No, not yet. But they can play some defense and that should at least keep them in games which should lead to a few more wins than last year. Hopefully the new GM has them on the right track to compete soon.

Just when it seemed Juwon Thompson might get some major reps for the Broncos (because CJ Anderson was being checked for a concussion), Thompson hurt his neck (http://fantasynews.cbssports.com/fantasyfootball/update/25319618/broncos-rb-juwan-thompson-neck-out-for-game-vs-lions)and missed the rest of the Lions game. I am convinced that if he is ever given a chance, Thomspson will show himself to be a strong NFL running back.

By the way, Kenny Anninuke was inactive for the Broncos (http://www.milehighreport.com/2015/9/27/9406461/broncos-vs-lions-inactives-james-casey-and-kenny-anunike-are-among) on Sunday. He should be back from his injury by next week thought.

Just switching around, but I caught Vinnie Rey involved in a key play in Cincinnati's win over Baltimore.

He was blitzing from his LB position on a play where Flacco connected for a big gain with the game on the line late. But the play was called back because the guy blocking Vinnie was flagged for grabbing his facemask. On the replay, it was clear that without the penalty, Vinnie sacks Flacco. The Ravens stalled and the Bengals held on for a 28-24 win.

Looks like the hapless Redskins just stole a win from the Eagles. Our man Jamison Crowder tallied 8 receptions for 78 yards. He was targeted 13 times, significantly more than any other receiver on the team.

Crowder had at least 3 catches for 1st downs including a spectacular catch over 2 defenders for 20 yards on 3rd down in Eagle territory. Gruden in his presser said that Crowder had his progress slowed by his pre season injury but that the coaches decided he was ready to start today. Gruden said Jamison was "tough" and that "the (pro) games was not to big for him" and that he blocks. His official line was 7 catches for 65 yards and 12 targets. He had one catch that was - yards when the qb had to get rid of it. In his personal tv interview Jamison was his usual modest self.

I can't believe I'm the first to post about Jamison Crowder almost single-handedly beating the Falcons yesterday. He was easily Washington's best offensive player (http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/story/washington-redskins-jamison-crowder-week-5-101115). He had 8 catches on 8 targets for 87 yards. Pierre Garcon, with 51 receiving yards, with the next highest Redskin in terms of yards (not counting the QB's passing yards).

Crowder has absolutely become a legit fantasy football option as a WR for the Skins. I do wonder what the return of Jordan Reed and DeShaun Jackson will mean for him though. I suspect Reed is a bigger deal as Jackson does not catch the same kind of slot passes that Crowder does.

Thanks for posting this. I watched that game yesterday primarily to see Crowder play, and I wasn't disappointed. My only disappointment was finding myself pulling so hard for the Skins, which was a first for me. I think he's on the verge of securing a lot of playing time regardless of what happens when Reed/Jackson return. I sure hope so. BTW: TVs caught Gruden and Crowder sharing a laugh about something after one of his bigger catches. He's obviously made a good impression up there.

Another Crowder post -

I haven't seen this article linked yet. It's from the Washington Post, and it highlights the three rookies they say are making a "big impact" for the Redskins - Scherff, Jones, and Jamison Crowder. He gets third billing in the article, but it still says some very nice things. To wit, Ike Hilliard, the Skins receivers coach, says, "He comes to work and he attacks everything every day like a pro." and "He's only going to be more of a factor in our offense as we go forward."

I think he's already secured a lot of playing time going forward. He's basically replaced Andre Roberts completely at this point. Roberts is one of those players that you hear great stuff about at practice (works hard, runs great routes, coachable) but for some reason he just isn't effective in games. As a Redskins fan, I'm really happy with what we are getting from Crowder. He'll lose some targets when Reed returns but not playing time (Jordan's a TE). He might also lose some targets to Jackson but he might also find himself even more open once teams have to try to keep up with Jackson.

I love it when I get Redskins on my fantasy football teams. I happily won the bid on the Jamison last week. And tux, you did the right thing pulling hard for the Skins....just wish that last pass had been thrown to Jamison!

Liz Clarke, the author, asked the question about the three rookies at Coach Gruden's 3PM Monday presser, but the "third billing' is by Clarke, not Gruden, who is very, very happy with with Crowder, and Crowder will remain in the starting lineup, absent injury, even when Jackson returns.

I was very impressed with Cockrell. Suffice it to say, the Steelers need any and all help they can get in the secondary. The Steelers defense has GOT to be tired, until the final drive, the Steelers offense had been on the field for only TEN plays in the entire second half.

Amusing that the final play was a direct snap running play to Leveon Bell who scored as the clock expired ...

Cockrell has been playing his butt off for the Steelers. The entire staff has been highly complimentary of Ross. Apparently he came in, attacked the play book and has digested most of it. The team leaders on defense have nothing but great things to say about Ross for that reason alone. Cockrell has endeared himself to the coaching staff as well. Coming in, he wanted to line up against Antonio Brown EVERYDAY! I love that attitude!

As for Crowder - What a great week he had! His role seems to increase each week, and he rewards Cousins for believing in him with every catch he makes. I had him as a Flex this week on Draft Kings, he killed it! :)

I think there is a lot of truth to the saying that goes, "College kids play for the name on the front of the jersey, professionals play for the name on the back of the jersey." If you look at professional sports in the modern era of Free Agency, it is more rare to see a player spend the entirety of his/her career with one team. I think it's a very accurate view point to see players and teams as separate entities, who've been brought together in a contracted business relationship. IMHO, I don't see this as much in college, unless the discussion is centered around a projected One-and-Done player. For the O&Ds, yes I can see that being the case. That one year is seen more as an interview or audition for the next level. The player is a short term commodity for a college team, with only one season to endear himself to the fan base and others who follow the program, and have these discussions. I think that's why the four year player seems to have a deeper "Duke Family" connection to some fans than the one year player. Though, that's not a completely true statement however. Through their special accomplishments, I would suspect that the Big 3 from '15 feel like Duke Fam to pretty much every Duke fan alive and breathing.

Your points are good ones.

I was thinking of the context I studied in management classes and observed while working in a public school system. Each organization or entity has its own culture. Individuals tend not to perform and adapt equally well in all organizational cultures. A teacher, coach or principal might thrive in one community and not seem to be effective in another. I look at Ross and think of the internal differences or organizational climate of the teams he's signed with. It's more than simply the skill sets of the teams he was on which influence his opportunities and his production.

The business of NFL personnel and production is very complicated .... and expensive!

Well, if we are comparing professional climates that breed success the best, it's a no contest. The Pittsburgh Steelers have won more Super Bowls than any other franchise in the NFL with six. Their culture is one of consistency, tradition, and success. The Steelers have had three head coaches in the past 50-ish years. The Bills are on their third HC since '10, and 7th since '01. Ross was lucky to land on a team like the Steelers who have a significant need at his position. That said, luck wasn't what landed him in the line-up, it was his hard work, preparation and the opportunity to step up after he distinguished himself among his peers and coaches.

He was hammered immediately after the ball arrived but hung on to the ball for the score.

After playing sparingly his first two weeks in the league following an injury in the preseason, Jamison has averaged six receptions and eight targets over his past six games.

I don't play fantasy sports, but before the season I told two of my neighbors to keep an eye out for Jamison. They've both picked him up on the waiver wire since. :)

Sean Renfree got to throw a little bit in today's blowout loss to the Panthers. Unfortunately, he was not immune to the prowess of the Carolina defense that had been dominating Matt Ryan for the rest of the game. He was 3 for 7, throwing for only 11 total yards and an interception, also getting sacked twice. A poor performance, but not much worse than his starter was doing against the same defense, possibly not much worse than any QB could do behind that O-line against that defense.

With both Kenny Anunike and Juwan Thompson on the Broncos' roster, we could add a couple Super Bowl rings to the growing list of accolades surrounding modern Duke Football later today.

Kenny won't be in pads, as he's been on the "reserve" roster late in the season after suiting up and seeing spot action weeks 1 through 11.

Juwan will be on the field wearing #40. He's seen only limited action with the offense during the regular season, occasionally showing up as the third rotation tailback or as the fullback in two-back sets, but he's a regular on special teams units and is always close to the action, especially in punt coverage.

How many Duke guys have Super Bowl rings? I'm pretty sure Cooper Helfet was part of the Seahawks organization two years ago, though he wasn't on the active roster for that season/game. Still, I'd imagine he got a ring.

Can't think of others off the top of my head. . .
