Recruits are allowed only one official visit per school and I think there is even a limit on the total number of official visits they can take (maybe 6?). My question is, what is the difference between an official and an unofficial visit. Is it only that during an unofficial visit the recruit must pay for everything himself, or is there also a restriction on the amount of time that the staff may spend with him?

For basketball, I believe that recruits are allowed 5 official visits. The main difference is that the school covers all expenses on an official visit, while they are not allowed to provide anything on an unofficial visit. I'm not quite sure what the rules are about contact during unofficial visits, although that is an interesting question given that there are periods when the coaches are not allowed to contact the players. I wonder whether that means that the players can't contact the coaches as well.

I think it depends on whether the athletic department provides female Ugrad escorts or not.

I thought that they did that for both official and unofficial visits? I mean, how else are we going to get them to come to Duke?

Atheltic Dept? No no, that was Lee Melch's job, which he has graciously passed on to McClutch

This may be a dumb question, but does Duke provide female Ugrad escorts? I'm sitting here thinking and I'm not sure I've seen any. i'll have to look next home game.

Isn't that more of a kerolina ploy?

Well, State does and UNC does but i don't recall seeing any at Duke. It's just a thought that came up when I read this...nothing important.

On an unofficial visit, time with coaches is no more restricted than otherwise. Game tickets (up to three) can be provided but the recruit must pay for everything else (even parking). Some schools provide food, but they must charge a plausible amount, even if less than "real" value. We were on an unofficial visit last week-end (Cal v. Arizona) and we were on the field pre-game and in the locker room/team room post-game and met with the coaches before and after. No escorts though....

If you mean as their "official" escorts around campus, then no, we do not. At least not for bball. The recruit always stays with one of the players and the player takes them around.

I'm not familiar with State and UNC's policy. Are you saying that the person who is the "official" host for the recruit is usually a female?

I have no idea about State and UNC's policies, but there were stories on the net a couple years ago about some schools which had attractive co-eds guide recruits around, with the instruction to do whatever it took to make them happy. This is frowned upon by the NCAA, so can't really be official and may not happen anymore.
