View Full Version : The switch pitcher, Pat Venditte

Although this is baseball, I figured it deserved its own thread. What happens when a switch pitcher faces a switch hitter? Switch pitcher Pat Venditte has been toiling in the minors for at least seven years. He was finally brought to the majors by the A's last week where he has been OK.

But his foray into the pros resulted in a rule change after a 2008 incident in the minors (http://www.athleticsnation.com/2015/6/5/8735407/the-pat-venditte-rule-what-happens-when-a-switch-pitcher-faces-a). You can watch it in the link. Scroll down to the minor league clip. It's about eight minutes long, but very funny in its own right.

I have seen during the course of today a newspaper headline saying he was "amphibious." I am convinced that Charles Shackelford wrote that headline .....

Either that or he's a heck of a swimmer, too.

But can he breathe through his eyelids, like the lava lizards of the Galapagos Islands?

He got his own rule in baseball, but did it get him on the cover of Vanity Fair?

"Vanity Fair" is the new "Wheaties" -- only different.

That's the one. Howard Ulman may have written the article, but I'm headed to Vegas to put down good money that Shackelford wrote that headline!

I wonder if this was one of those jokes that someone expected the editor to catch but it swam past.

Maybe. But that story sounds a bit fishy.

I don't think either of these thoughts will hold water.

Just imagine where we'd be if the Harrison twins played baseball and switched IDs/positions/throwing hands/arms...

Maybe huh!

After just diving in, head still under water, with the answer (bait) in the 2nd paragraph, 2nd word.

Skimmed right past it.

What's the line on whether Venditte throws a sinker? If he doesn't, I'm guessing he'll quickly get the hook.

Venditte came on in relief of starter Jesse Hahn and pitched 2⅓ innings of no-hit, scoreless ball. Struck out three, but walked two. He wasn't bad, but not all that sharp either, throwing 19 strikes in a 35 pitch outing. The A's beat the Rangers 5-4 with a walkoff infield single in the ninth. Clippard got the win, while two others also followed Venditte.

And for you fisher-puns, Venditte does have a slider that sinks.

He seems like an (older) rookie you'd like to see succeed. The last A's rookie pitcher his age was Chad Bradford, who had several good years throwing gimmick pitches, sidearm&submarine as a setup man and closer.

The last west coast rookie who really caught my attention in the same way -- and he did win rookie of the year -- was Tim Salmon.

On Friday, Venditte went on the disabled list (http://www.contracostatimes.com/athletics/ci_28304496/notebook-switch-pitcher-venditte-goes-disabled-list).

After Friday's giveaway to the Angels, it looks like the A's bullpen could benefit from his hook, line and sinker.

It wasn't till late yesterday that I heard about the multiple tragedies in Wilmington.
Without question, prayers go out to the victims and their families, and the community.

The timing just couldn't have been worse.

This was and is a pun to this thread, the intent was from Finding Nemo for those of us that have children and grandchildren, and know the movie well.

If the mods choose to delete, it is completely understood and supported.

Thanks for understanding.
