I wish I could say I was surprised by this news, but he did not look at all well at Dean Smith's memorial service. Still, very sad news. May his family find comfort in their time of grief.

Sorry to hear that. His loyalty to Dean & to UNC was admirable. Prayers for the family.

Good friends and neighbors, the Guthridges. Easy to get past all the rivalry junk with them. Our condolences to Leesie and her family.
Love, Ima

Sad news. Some of my best memories of the Duke/UNC rivalry are the battles against Guthridge-led teams. Particularly the games featuring Antawn Jamison, Vince Carter, and Shammond Williams vs. that Langdon/Brand/McLeod/Wojo/Carrawell/Battier team. I'm not sure both teams have concurrently had that level of talent since that time. I'd probably say no. RIP, Bill.

Agreed. Bills time as a head coach was short but he had a outstanding UNC team that season. Great games against them. He seemed like a great worker and loyal friend. Not a great year for the heels. They've lost two legends in their program this year.

Perhaps once again he'll now be one of Dean's chief wing men, albeit this time wearing wings.

Dean gave him a chance to shine on his own and shine he did. Went to the Final Four in 66% of his seasons as head coach!

Will Johnson, a Morehead Scholar, was going to go to Princeton to play basketball because he wanted to play while in college. Guthridge convinced Dean to give him a spot on the team because he liked him as a person so much. Johnson took the Morehead and ended up starting some games for the heels (not great teams)

Second note, Rule of Threes... Look both ways Doh

Doh is already "dead" to UNC....
