Ressler’s group includes former NBA player Grant Hill, who’ll be chairman, said one of the people. The others buying the team are private-equity investor Richard Schnall, Spanx Inc. founder Sara Blakely and her husband, Jesse Itzler, as well as Steven Starker, the former Goldman Sachs Group Inc. partner and co-founder of brokerage BTIG LLC. Ressler would be investing personally in the Hawks.

As an Atlantan, I sort of wish the ownership had more ties to the city, the better to insure that they don't eventually get shipped off to the first burg that builds them a new arena. Sarah Blakely is an Atlantan, but as far as I can tell, Ressler has zero ties to the city.

It was so much simpler when Ted Turner owned everything.

Hill now joins the following Duke alums in NBA team ownership:
