Eduardo Galeano died yesterday. It's a terrible loss for both Latin America and the game of soccer. Galeano recognized the role of the game as a mechanism for social change and a conduit through which individuals could rise from poverty. His playful 'Soccer in Sun and Shadow' is indescribably beautiful in its simplicity, a reflection of how he believed the game was to be viewed.
"I go about the world, hand outstretched, and in the stadiums I plead: A pretty move, for the love of God. And when good soccer happens, I give thanks for the miracle and I don't give a damn which team or country performs it."
Maybe this will finally inspire me to read The Open Veins of Latin America.
Descansa en Paz, Seņor Galeano.
