However, if we don't win it all, we can blame the originator of this thread....

This is one I have to disagree with. My love for Duke was cemented because of this season. After enjoying big time basketball success while in Durham, my move to Greensboro in '92 for college gave me a different perspective on Durham basketball. And then for K to bring almost the exact same team back the next year and do big things? I was sold. The man was a coach. He was my coach. The first time as an adult that I understood why I liked Duke basketball.

When I was in elementary school, we boys (I tried to stay out of it) would gather on the playground before the opening bell to play a game (?) appropriately called 'Tackle the Man with the Ball'. It had no object to it, other than physical survival. No goal either. Just grab the ball and RUN for your life. And it was life. With a dirt, hardpan football field, that would not grow grass on it if it were re-sodded, when you were unfortunate enough to have possession of the ball, you could expect physical torture until you relented that possession. We'd still lose -- just without the pain of having to watch Trajan fall down on the last play of his college career.

For us to win, you'd have to roll it all the way back to the 14:19 mark of the second half, which was our last lead. From that point on, we were either tied or trailing.

I was working in a paper mill when that play happened. I was a "fourth hand" on #2 rewinder, which was a machine used to turn big rolls of paper into little rolls of paper. The number #1 rewinder crew was listening on a radio and giving us updates as the game progressed. Well when the play was about to go down, the broke handler, young T.C. Johnson, happened by carrying a Sony Watchman. He came over to our station and we stopped the winder. That was a big no no, especially considering we had the meanest, hardest of hard foremen, Mr. Ansley, running our shift, but we were like, what the hell! That game was a huge deal in Georgia. So 7 guys crowded around that tiny screen. What was it? 2 inches? Anyway, when Sid slid, time stopped and we all froze in anticipation of the call... then we went nuts. We were jumping up and down high fiving. I think some guys hugged each other. After about a minute, we realized that we better get the winder running before Mr. Ansley came by and started cracking heads. Right at that moment, we saw Mr. Ansley come shuffling out of the foreman's office, grinning from ear to ear. The old rascal had been listening in his office. He grinned until he made it over to us, shook his head, and said, "Get back to work!"

No way I want to delete that. But we can delete Charlie Leibrandt's world series pitching performances.

Bonds (pre-roids) had no chance of throwing El Sid out! He would have gunned down Eggs Benedict by 10 feet. (Anyone remember Francisco coming oh so close to ending that game on a Grand Slam the pitch before the single? Good times those were!)

ANd please delete the steroid version of Bonds and all his hits and records with that crap in his body...All Hail the true King Hank Aaron.

I was actually at this game, and it remains a highlight of my sports viewing life. A couple interesting points about that play: (1) apparently Andy Van Slyke tried to move bonds a few steps to his left prior to the play but bonds blew him off and (2) Pirates catcher Mike Lavalliere had a special catchers mitt he used to catch Tim Wakefield that was a bit bigger than his standard mitt. I have heard that, for consistency sake, he used the larger mitt for that entire series except game 7 when for some reason he went to the smaller mitt. Perhaps with a slightly larger mitt he gets Bream...

but, while we are at it, can we please delete Lonnie Smith's base running blunder (i.e. getting deked by Chuck Knoblauch) in the 8th inning of game 7 of the 1991 world series?
