Fascinating Grantland column (http://grantland.com/features/department-of-defense/) today on work being done with the NBA's SportsVue data to analyze the impact of individual defenders.

Since Duke uses SportsVU, does this mean this sort of analysis can be made for Duke defenders? That would be really cool information to see.

Cool indeed. An 'easy' alternative to get an overall estimate of defensive prowess, would be to do a fully corrected (that is adjusted for the other 9 players on the court and, ideally, the score) +/- for defense only.

Kirk Goldbsberry says he and some of his colleagues have invented some breakthrough ways to measure defensive effectiveness - very cool article for those with a quant slant. Everyone else can go back to their Flat Earth Society Chapter Meeting :p. I keed, I keed...

Duke may still be the only college program with these cameras, it would be really interesting to understand how extensively we use them.

Cool quotes from the just-completed Sloan analytics conference that touch on the advanced defense metrics and lots of Battier quotes:

This tidbit here just highlights my problem with analytics:

28. The most staggering NBA stat from Sloan? Fouling when winning can increase your chances by 11 percent, according to a paper written by Franklin Kenter of Rice University. The paper shows that fouling near the end of games pretty much makes sense in every situation, whether you’re trailing or leading. When behind, it advises fouling one minute out for every six points you are behind. When leading, it suggests fouling one minute out for every three points you lead.

Talk about unwatchable games. The whole idea of intentionally fouling is repugnant to me. I hate when the team winning by 3 intentionally fouls the other team as they come up court. It's good tactics, but lousy theater. It's not what I as a viewer want to see. Strap it on and play defense. I hope that this does not become strategy in games. If it does, I hope the rules get changed to take it away.

I am looking forward to the ability to use the defensive analytics. As a lover of defense, it appeals to me.

Thanks for the link.

According to one of the new defensive metrics, Mike Dunleavy is the best wing defender in the NBA and Michael-Kidd Gilchrist is the 2nd worst. Hmmm.

I absolutely love the player movement charts, especially Tim Duncans haha. Basically straight lines the whole entire game, dude is not wasting any movement or energy and he knows where he is most effective. I would love to see these charts for Duke Players.

However I stand by my comments in another thread, that analytics are for nerds and wimps who can't actually play basketball, and need to come up with something to put themselves in the game. Chumps

*Dang it Chuck stole my keyboard again!!

If coaches started to adopt this strategy, the rules would definitely need to be tweaked to compensate. The NBA already gives an automatic bonus for the 2nd foul in the last 2 minutes, so how about an addtional bonus free throw for every other foul after that? Or maybe the choice to take the ball rather than free throws? Hopefully the powers that be wouldn't let the game become unwatchable.
