View Full Version : Okafor and Winslow Freshman Point & Rebounds

As of right now, Okafor currently has 352 points and a total of 171 rebounds (75 Off & 96 Def), with the season being right at over a little over the mid-point.

Last year Jabari broke both the scoring (670) and rebounding (306) records at Duke for a freshman.

As special as a player as Okafor is, I just thought it would be interesting to see what he could do as far as freshman scoring and rebounds, for the rest of the season.

Parker last year finished averaging 19.1 ppg and 8.7 rebounds per game. As of right now, Okafor is averaging 18.5 ppg and 9.0 rebounds per game. I believe that this is obtainable based off of these numbers.

From statistics compiled from last year with help from numerous members, I don't think that Okafor has cracked the top ten on either list for a freshman, but it shouldn't be much longer before he does.

I am hoping for Okafor to break Parker's records because if he does, it's probably because he gets to play a few more games.

Completely agree. Even with an early exit (God forbid), I can see Okafor breaking both of Jabari's records. But it'd be close. With a minimum Sweet Sixteen run, that's an additional 38 points and 18 rebounds. That's a nice cushion to have.

I'm a little confused. While I'm pretty certain that the Dawkins at 506 is Johnny, not Andre, I'm not sure why there are two Parkers on the list at 670 and 581. I can't remember any other player with that last name, and I will admit that right now I'm too lazy to look it up. :-)

Only other Parker listed at Goduke is Ace Parker. He shows as having played in two hoops games, but did not register a stat.

My apologizes, that was a copy and paste error from when I brought the information over from a post I posted last year about Jabari Parker.

The Parker is Jabari, just didn't delete it from the last list I posted in the Parker thread, which was the same info I started this thread with.

Thank you for pointing that out.

With nine regular season games left, and at least one game in the ACC and NCAA tournaments, with his current average of 18.1 ppg and 9.3 rpg, we could project a final total of 597 points and 307 rebounds for Jahlil.

It looks like a pretty safe bet that the rebounding title will be Jahlil's, as I would expect Duke to play more than this minimum number of games.

And there is a reasonable shot at the scoring as well. We'd need to play roughly 4 additional games at Okafor's current scoring pace, so making it to the ACC Final and the Sweet-16 would potentially do it.

I know this wasn't your point but I've got to say that an ACC tourney runner-up finish and a sweet 16 loss would be a pretty disappointing end to this season.

I noticed that too.

With those four additional games, he could also squeak by Marbury for the second ACC spot overall. With the projected points at 597, he's basically at 600 and averaging 18.1 ( ~20ppg x 4) Jahlil could just make it to 680, particularly if he goes off for 30 or so at some point before the season is over:

Points (ACC)
721 -- Kenny Anderson, GT
680 -- Stephon Marbury, GT
670 -- Jabari Parker, Duke
607 -- Dion Glover, GT
594 -- Rashad McCants, UNC
587 -- Tyler Hansbrough, UNC
582 -- Joe Smith, Maryland
581 -- Gene Banks, Duke
568 -- Mark Price, GT
563 -- Skip Wise, Clemson

Throwing out my generous rounding above (18.1 ---> 20), at 398 points currently, Jahlil would need another 323 points or 18 games worth of points to pass Kenny Anderson. If we have a bye until Friday in the ACC Tournament, it looks like Duke would need to play on Monday night for Jahlil to have a shot at breaking Kenny Anderson's record, which seems right to me... that's a legendary record worth breaking only by an outstanding player in an outstanding season.

Of course, it's very possible that we play on Thursday in the ACC Tournament, which would give Jahlil a shot at the record if we play on Sunday in the ACC Tourney and Duke makes it to Indianapolis.

Actually, that was exactly my point: all it will take would be a Saturday appearance in the ACC and a second-weekend showing in the NCAA (which is certainly less than what we hope for the team).

In previous years I remember someone (can't remember who) posting a "PPG and RPG necessary" as people were getting close to milestones at the end of the year. I thought I would try something for Okafor's PPG and RPG. Hopefully this helps.

Points:
Parker 670
Okafor 431 (239 pt difference)

14 17.1 6.2
15 15.9 5.8
16 14.9 5.4

So at his current averages (18.0 ppg and 9.1 rpg after the FSU game), he'll need 14 games to catch Parker in scoring and 10 games to get there in rebounding.

That's going to be tough -- especially in scoring.

We have seven regular season games left. Anywhere from 1 to 4 in the ACC Tournament. Then anywhere from 1 to 6 in the NCAA Tournament.

So a maximum of 17 remaining games ... 16 if we get the bye in the ACC Tournament.

I seem to recall quite a bit of debate about whether it is fair to compare Jah to Tim Duncan. Well, this (http://nypost.com/2015/01/25/how-okafors-personality-helps-him-handle-huge-expectations/) ought to add some fuel to the fire.

In other news, I think we can safely conclude that Jah's dominance this season is in large part a consequence of Nate James's taking over for Steve Wojciechowski as the Duke big man coach.

Bwhahaha. Just looking to stir things up a bit on a boring sports Sunday.

This tells me that, barring further injury and missing more games, Okafor will absolutely break the rebound record. I just don't see how he doesn't.

On a points perspective, it's gonna be tough. Missing the Clemson would hurt, and Duke would need to go to the ACC Tourney finals and the second weekend of the NCAA to give the Oak a chance.

Wow, Parker had a much better season than I actually remember. The Mercer loss must have clouded my memory. From this point in the season, Parker played in only 6 more games for Duke. Two more regular season games, three in the ACC tournament, and one NCAA game. Okafor would need 27ppg to get there. My guess is that he gets the rebounding mark but obviously ends up just short of Parker's points total. If he manages to beat the points total, it means the team made a very nice March run... (fingers crossed)

Yeah. I just don't see how Okafor doesn't get the rebounding mark.

And he could break the scoring mark. Although that would be a product of Okafor being a beast and Duke getting far in the tournament. Fortunately, the two are interlinked.

Wow, Parker had a much better season than I actually remember.

Even if Okafor does not score more points, I think he has had a much better offensive season than Parker. I enjoyed Parker's play immensely, but Okafor is more dominant in my opinion. Okafor's lower scoring outputs have usually been associated with teams committing to double teaming him. And many teams have chosen to do so because he consistently scores when single-covered. Admittedly it is an eye test, but it seems to me that many more teams have game-planned specifically for Okafor than did so for Parker. Not to take away from Parker's accomplishments, but the fact that Okafor has a shot at scoring more points despite facing so much multiple coverage is a testament to how exceptional his offense has been.

And if he does not score more than Parker it will certainly be because of his inexplicable free throw shooting struggles for more than one reason. Frankly, if he can recover his High School touch from the charity stripe (70 percent his junior and senior years), I feel confident he will score the most points of any Freshman at Duke, noth because of the extra points per game and the likliehood he plays (many) more games.

Interesting point. I tend to agree, although my basis would be scarcity over effectiveness. Parker is a scoring machine at the forward position. He loves to face up. The last forward who comes to mind that can score like that is KD at Texas. And I guarantee there have probably been a few others since then. Maybe not as good, maybe better, but certainly comparable.

It's tough to compare Okafor: a monster in the paint who is effective with his back to the basket, doesn't like taking jump shots, and makes two-thirds of his shots. It's really unbelievable. Sullinger is often used as a college comp, but he only shot 54% during his freshman year (and 52% his sophomore year). Finding a player who ALWAYS commands a double team in college is very rare. Even Demarcus Cousins isn't that great of a comp.

Agree that it's not all about stats.

It should be noted that Jabari Parker was the first freshman in Duke and ACC history to be a consensus first-team All-American.

I think Okafor will match that ... if he can also add at least one recognized national player of the year award, that would take him to the next level.

BTW: just two previous Duke freshmen have been first-team All-ACC -- Austin Rivers in 2012 and Parker in 2014. Parker finished a distant second place (48-25) to TJ Warren for ACC player of the year. That's another place Okafor could go to the next level of he wins POY in the ACC.

One other potential landmark. I would argue that no other freshman has ever been the best payer on a Duke Final Four team, although Gene Banks in 1978 and Grant Hill in 1991 were pretty darn important. So were Christian Laettner in 1989 and Bobby Hurley in 1990.

But none of those were clearly Duke's best player ... as Okafor has been ... if he takes Duke that far.

It's becoming increasingly clear that the Oak will not break Jabari's scoring record unless Duke goes far into the tournament. But he will shatter Jabari's rebounding numbers. I wouldn't be shocked to see Okafor hit 350 rebounds this year.

Crazy that he is now no longer a given to set the rebound mark. A few weeks ago that seemed certain. But I guess that is what a string of 3-4 rebound games will do. Now we almost have to make the Sweet-16 for it to happen, and we may even need the elite-8.

Yeah, he has 219 rebounds this season, which currently places him 8th on ksimp's list, with a probability of getting to 7th and a remote possibility of 6th in our next game. He has an outside shot at 5th if we get to the championship game.

At 399 points, TJones has an outside (maybe way outside) chance of making this list as well. Duke would have to at a minimum reach the final 4 and probably the championship game for him to catch Singler (451 points) but its possible. How sick would it be to have 3 of the top 10 freshman scorers in the same class?!!?!! This season has been so much fun to watch and the freshman (Allen included) have been amazing. I really hope they can win a few more games just so I can see them play a little longer (in a Duke uniform that is!)

I'm shocked Okafor hasn't been rebounding much lately. In the last 6 games, Okafor has averaged 4.8 rebounds, or 4 rebounds below his average. I think it's a combination of boxing out more effectively (leading to other Duke players getting rebounds) and Winslow gathering 34 rebounds in the last 3 games. I'm also curious if the coaching staff told Winslow to get the rebounds, leading Okafor to run down the floor a little quicker to draw the defense in.

I'm still convinced Okafor will break the rebounding record, and let's hope the scoring record too.

Tyus now has 212 assists for his freshman season. Did a little research and Hurley finished with 289 for his Freshman season. Not sure if he is the top freshman assist leader, but one could assume.

Jah has had to deal with a lot of very focused D. He has his work cut out for him...

After today's game with Gonzaga:

Jahlil Okafor - 629
Banks - 581
Deng - 558
Rivers - 527
Dawkins - 506
Redick- 495
J. Williams - 492
Winslow-462
Singler- 451
T. Jones - 429

Rebounds: (Duke)
Jahlil Okafor - 313
Jabari Parker-306
Gene Banks-292
Mike Gminski-289
Luol Deng-255
Justise Winslow-234
Shane Battier-230
Danny Ferry-221
Kenny Dennard-215
Carlos Boozer-213
Kyle Singler-198
Josh McRoberts-189

So basically we have 3 Freshman who would all be 2000 point scorers if they played all 4 yrs and 2 of them would likely be 1000 rebound guys as well. Not to mention they would likely go to all 4 Final Fours and win multiple championships. Amazing to have 3 guys that good in one class, and Grayson is no slouch himself. Clearly those 4 kids are one of K's strongest classes ever.

As a group, this freshman class has done something that Brand, Burgess, Battier, and Avery didn't do, that JayWill, Dunleavy, Boozer and Sanders didn't do and something that Shelden Williams, JJ and S. Randolph didn't do. They're going to hang a final four banner( and possibly a national championship banner) as freshmen.

After the MSU game. Jahlil would need 24pts. tomorrow night against Wisconsin to surpass Jabari on the scoring list. It can be done, but as long as Duke wins that is all that matters. If he only gets 15 and wins that will be a better reward. ONE GAME TO GO FOR #5

I think Jah will be happy with the reward of just getting to the final compared to Jabari's end of season.

The most interesting thing about these lists to me is just how good Deng was, in retrospect. He was certainly not the #1 option on that team and put up some amazing numbers as a freshman... Sorry, that has nothing to do with this team or tonight's game...

Update after the Wisconsin game. This has been as special group of freshman players. Scary what they could accomplish if they stay a few more years. However, if this is the last time some of these freshman play a game at Duke, it was an amazing way to finish out their first year.

P.S. Three of the top ten scoring freshman in Duke's history are on this year's team. Just think about that for a moment.

In our hearts, right next to Mike D's back to back to back 3s. (Sure Dunleavy wasn't a frosh, but still . . .)
