We're losing our best WR, our best OL, our best LB, our QB, a valued member of The Stable, a slew of DL ...

I don't know enough about DL play -- who's been our best DLman this year? Know that Jones (formerly Woodruff) has made lots of plays over the years, as has JDO, Johnson seems good ...

We still owe Wake for that decade of yuck. Pound them.

I was totally ready to bemoan another 12:30 kick, so I am beyond thrilled that we get to end the home season with an all day tailgate! The students won't be there, but hopefully others will show up to celebrate a great season (despite the debacle of Thursday night) and help send the seniors off with an awesome crowd to celebrate a victory. Yup, it will be cold, but that is football weather. As long as it isn't raining (and it won't be) it should be a nice evening for football. LGD!

I certainly wasn't ignoring our offensive losses but your points are well taken. I'm probably most concerned about QB next year considering the loss of experience there. I'm hoping we have a nice trio or quartet of WR returning plus 4* Trevon Lee and praying that Deaver returns in excellent shape. Kelby Brown returns and of course we all hope he's near his game from 2013. I think the younger guys got good experience at LB and we'll be solid there again. I'm pretty confident in our OL and RB depth next year. I'll let others with more knowledge than I have make their comments about the DL.

This is an excellent question. Jeremy enrolled early (January) at tOSU, then sat out a year because of transferring. We can hope he will stay for his final year of eligibility.

The team who develops a rhythm early (offensively and defensively) and can play without making errors will have the advantage. (Easy for me to say!) Wake has been even more erratic than Duke. They will be dangerous because they have nothing to lose...... a role reversal for this contest!

I thinking someone looked at some of the geek polls in one of the bowl threads before games against VT and the cheaters and the forecast then was Duke -26 vs WFU or something equally insane. You are correct. That is stunning.

Duke opens as an 18 points favorite in Vegas. That line is stunning.

Per the Sagarin predictor, Duke would be a 19 point favorite on a neutral field ... add 3 for home field, and we should be 22 point favorites.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/ncaaf/sagarin/

We just had two outcomes we don't like and a real stinker against Carolina, but we controlled the VT game for nearly 45 minutes -- that game was a play or two from being a 20-something to 7-ish Duke win. We're good and have done a lot right this year, and hopefully will again, and Wake has been woeful in certain respects this year.

Reilly

Per the SRS at S-R, Duke would be a 14 point favorite on a neutral field ... add 3 for home and that's 17.

http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/years/2014-ratings.html

WFU is the 121st (of 128) offense, per the above. They do have the 55th best defense.

And we see from this that the cheaters have one of the worst defenses in FBS this year and may have been the worst prior to Thursday night's game. We see how far that got us:rolleyes:.

http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/team/22/p3

(You have to go to page 3 to find them;).)

Thankfully, we "helped" them escape the "worst" defensive ranking of all D1 FB schools and get their YPG average under 500:mad:.

I know your point and appreciate your links. It's nice to look at and try and figure out the reasoning for our line being stunning as Bob said, especially based on recent performances.

Reilly
11-23-2014, 08:46 PM
I guess I'm disagreeing that it is stunning. If I'm reading this right (WFU's lines this year):

http://www.covers.com/pageLoader/pageLoader.aspx?page=/data/ncf/teams/team138.html

... Wake was a 13.5 point underdog to VT (at WFU)
... Wake was a 15 point underdog to NCSU
... Wake was a 13.5 point underdog to BC (at WFU)
... Wake was a 6 point underdog to Syracuse (at WFU)

All of those games were at Wake except the NCSU one. We're better than State (and VT). We had a bad game against UNC; we're not a bad team.

Reilly
11-23-2014, 08:48 PM
And 18 point favorites certainly can lose. VT was 13.5 favorites and lost to WFU. I think we were 14 or 15 point favorites against Army and lost when Sean threw 5 INTs. VT was a 20 point favorite and lost to JMU a couple years ago.

We are not a bad team by any stretch. But we beat ourselves the last two games. And looked poor in doing it.

Wake played very well against VT last week.

I did not see anything the last two weeks to make me think we cover that spread. I am just hoping for a win, and looking like we are focused and determined. 9-3 and a bowl game is a good year. But we need to shake whatever funk it is that hit us the last two games.

The -10 result @L'ville is one that says, to me, our line is way out of whack. Maybe losing to BC by only 6 says that, as well.

Syracuse is not that good -- WFU lost by 23 at home to them. State's not that good and beat WFU by 29.

We should be ticked about the past two games. Cut & Co. may ride our team hard this week. And we need to send these seniors out well.

I know. I'm probably yanking your chain more than anything else. Bob and I sat in the GA section and watched (and cussed at) the last two games unfurl (unravel?), along with my younger son-in-law for the cheaters game. We just couldn't believe how poorly we played and what we gave away in each of those games. My son even texted me during the unc contest (he turned down tix to attend-wise young man) and asked me what high school team was on the field playing the heels that night. I think we're just shell-shocked or gun shy about the line after witnessing the last 120 minutes of Duke FB.

The spread looks reasonable if you look at the entire season, Sagarin type ratings, etc.

The spread looks unreasonable if you look at the last seven quarters Duke has played.

Tell me which Duke team will show up and I'll tell you who's going to win.

Make no mistake, Wake has a very good defense, better than ours right now I'd say.
Duke has had, for almost all of the season, a far, far better offense....but somehow we've
gotten into an offensive funk. We'll have had nine days and tons of motivation to correct things, so I'm hopeful (if not entirely confident).

(we really can't afford to turn the ball over and aid the limited Wake offense).

I grew up going to Duke football games in the 70's, and remember "Red means go."

Once an adult, I had season tickets for several years. Went three straight years without watching a win at Wallace Wade. Duke finally broke through and got one in a driving rain against ECU. For years, I wished we could just be competitive.

I thank these seniors for their sacrifice and hard work. I thank them for representing the University in a positive way. They will always be winners in my book. Regardless of what happened last Thursday or happens this Saturday, we should definitely honor them.

Such a big game for the seniors and the program. A chance to go out in style and atone for the recent decline in play. I would like to think
motivation will not be a factor (though I was surprised from the Powell quote that some of our guys took unc lightly).

9-3 going into a bowl would right the ship going into our bowl. I'm hopeful.

Looking at that list of seniors... Man we are losing a lot of talent. Great run by all those boys. It's okay though everyone, the Nicodem Pierre Era starts next year, so I'm not worried.

That being said, let's get to 10 wins this year. Beat Wake, win our first bowl game in forever. Still a great season.

Oh yeah, and go Pack!

Duke's offense has only turned it over once in a play that started and ended in Duke territory in the last two games. Special teams gave up another. A long pass started in Duke territory but was picked in Carolina territory. The other three were on plays that started in the opponent's side of midfield. So, the turnovers have stopped Duke drives more than they have started opposing drives.

What would greatly help is a Duke defense that forced some turnovers in Wake territory, giving Duke some short fields. I talked to Helton about that today and he said it had been a priority this week in practice.

Wake has been shaky on offense and they have a true freshman QB. Time for the D to trade bend-but-don't-break for bring-the-heat.

Except, in the past two games, we barely cracked 19.5 . . . once. The Deac D is as good as VPISU's (against which we scored 16) and better, all told, than the Vandals-Down-The-Street's. I like Duke to win, but not to cover.

If anyone was having trouble, try it again... I've refreshed it, and I'm seeing it fine.

Defense took that entire series off.

Defense? What defense! And that last offensive series was pathetic!

Please post if you're still seeing issues. We don't know about any issues unless you tell us. :)

Secondary continues its poor play down the stretch. Sheesh this is getting old.

Whoever is "coaching" that secondary needs to be flipping hamburgers next week. It's gotten worse every week. That is one reason there's so many empty seats. Just drop back, sling it down the field. Somebody will catch it, rest assured.
And our last series? Great pass to Blakeney, then three straight bad passes. Typical Boone.

Holy smokes. This thread is the epitome of the hedonic treadmill. 18 wins in two years and suddenly everything about this team sucks? Sad. I thought we were up 27-14 on our way to a 9-3 regular season. Must be mistaken.

Well, they have completed their three longest TD passes tonight and we have not won this game yet. Some very bad tackling led to this last pass.

I've only seen last part of 2nd quarter till now, but what I've seen has been ugly. This game is not over so don't assume 9-3 yet.

Dirk needs to hold onto the ball. Fumbled last game, too. We were lucky to recover this one.

Another opportunity for the D.

Nice drive, way to go, Blaser! Recovered Sirk's fumble. Nice. Boone looked pretty good on that drive.

No, you're not. Three winable games at home and look how we play. Making a freshman qb look like Peyton Manning. He just threw another long td pass. I certainly appreciate the good seasons, but this is just horrible defense. They couldn't cover me!

I am trying to stay positive but share your frustrations. Wake is going after Breon Borders and having success. He was victimized on 2 of the 3 TDs (the other was thrown to a TE working against LB France). Borders also gave up several crucial big plays against VT. Also UNC but he was hardly alone that night. He seems to be really struggling with biting on a first move and with finding the ball later in plays.

We're also getting outcoached. That fake punt wasn't a big surprise with Wake down 13.

Nor is it a surprise given this is their last game. They have absolutely nothing to lose by being bold and taking chances. You'd think we would anticipate that a bit more.

We are clearly the better team. Lets just put it away early in the 4th.

Duke might just be the better team, but it is not at all clear to me. I am seeing two pretty evenly-matched teams in the game that I am watching.

And we're going to be 9-3.

ESPNU put up a nice set of stats: most wins in any 2 year stretch in Duke football history; first back to back 8 win seasons since the 1930s. Earlier they put up a stat that Duke had won 25 games since the beginning of the 2012 season, and 25 wins in the 10 seasons before that. When you consider that the 25 wins over 10 seasons includes the first 3 (I think) Cutcliffe years, when Duke was actually, you know, winning some games, the achievements under Cutcliffe become even more remarkable.

This class of seniors, and Cutcliffe along with them, have accomplished some amazing things. Congratulations on winning their last home game.

ESPNU showed the heavy equipment coming on the field. Hope they go back to show the start of the demolition.
