Nolan Smith just tweeted that Wayne Ellington's father was shot and killed.

We can all poke fun at the wrong shade of blue, or the current scandal at the University of Non-stop Cheating, and in the end, we are all people with family and friends.

I don't know Wayne or his family, I send prayers his way hoping for he finds comfort in good memories.

I had forgotten he and Gerald Henderson were long time friends.

Very tragic and unwarranted. I hope Wayne and his family can overcome this senseless act. Thoughts an prayers to him and his family.

Thanks to the OP for bringing the proper attention to this.

Just saw this. Despite the fan rivalry- the player on both teams do have connections and friendships. I am sure G and others have reached out. I recall when this happened to another UNC guy- Michael Jordan. Very hard and sad situation.

Wayne found out just after the Lakers-Hornets game in LA, and Gerald Henderson immediately came over to console him.

I found a Philly article with some more detail. As always, some of the most interesting takes on the murder can be found in the comments section:

This is terrible news for Ellington and his family. It's easy to forget how enmeshed some players in our program and ones like it are with crime and violence plagued communities. History shows how tough it can be to transcend those origins and, even when you do, you still are often a single degree of separation away.
