As I say every year, I hope this thread stays mostly unused.

Seth Curry made his debut for Erie in a 90-88 preseason win over Canton today. Seth had 14 points and led the early explosion that built a halftime lead and with the exhibition rotations in use, he ended up playing only 22 minutes.

Seth is back to leading his team to wins as he had 23 points and 6 rebounds in 40 minutes as Erie beat Idaho 96-88. Since the Magic also had Peyton Siva as an affiliate player for Erie, Seth is back to playing to playing heavily off the ball.

Glad to hear that Seth is playing well. With numbers like those, it's hard to see how he'll stay in the D-League.
I wonder how long Andre stays on the Heat active roster, seems like he might get some benefit from playing against other pro players in game situations.

Seth is on the top of all of the lists that people have of players who could get the call up. For a player like him, finding the right fit is everything. Trying to pick the right team to go to training camp with can be tricky.

You can watch his next game tomorrow at 7:00pm ET in Fort Wayne here:

Seth is featured on the homepage for the Erie Bayhawks. I hate to see him riding busses and pulling down small coin, but he has a future somewhere. Maybe not the NBA. Maybe not even the Magic, which is kind of stocked with both shooting guards and point guards right now. But just because Erie is affiliated with Orlando doesn't mean he couldn't play elsewhere in the NBA if needs arise. And I have no doubt he'd have a future overseas if he wanted to go that route, though right now he's committed to getting entrée into the NBA. Color me optimistic on Seth's future as a pro baller.

Seth turned down multiple solid overseas offers this summer. For a player like him, the route he has chosen to take is pretty solid. He reportedly had a partial guarantee amount of $150,000 for going to camp with Orlando. Just one callup for ten days will see him past the $200,000 mark for the season while being able to stay in the United States all year closer to family and friends.

So what has Nolan been doing in the interim? He wasn't on a roster in the NBA was he?

No. He was playing for Galactus Hospital in Turkey. He got kicked out of the gym by his coach during a game, after throwing a towel. Then he parted ways with the team. That was a few weeks ago.

Kentucky's James Young was drafted #17 by the Celtics this year, and he's now been sent down to the Maine Red Claws to team up with Ralph Sampson III. It's a good move for him; he wasn't playing. And these OADs can't develop as players if they butt-polish benches. Still, if you can't get PT for the Celtics this year, well.... Danny "No We Won't Trade Rajon" Ainge will likely keep him in the bank as trade bait. For when Ainge trades Rajon.

You know, I think I am going to start calling it Galactus Hospital in all my recaps now.

It ended up taking from the time of that incident until Saturday to resolve how his contract would be settled.

I saw the name of the team intermittently since Nolan joined, but in my head it always registered as "Galactus Hospital".

Finally, I thought, to hell with it! I don't have time to remember some 14 letter Turkish word. It's gonna just be Galactus Hospital! :D

There will be other activity soon. In addition to Nolan joining Delaware, Dahntay Jones is joining Fort Wayne as I guess the desire to keep playing does not go away that easily.

I do not know how the actual mechanics of Nolan's move worked. Apparently he was claimed off waivers as I suppose his rights might have still been held by Idaho from his NBA days. I wonder if he specifically knew he would be headed there or if he was looking to go anywhere that wanted him.

The two teams actually play on Friday if both players are available in time.

I was going to post about Andres D League adventures in the NBA thread but I see you have it covered here. This is a really good run down of how everyone is doing. Thanks for doing this. Andre is playing really well hope he gets called back to the Heat as soon as the road trip is over. He obviously has been learning a lot even if he is sitting the bench.

That brings up an interesting debate, whats better getting playing time for a D league team or sitting the bench for an NBA team? I'm talking about overall development here not the money. How many D league guys get called up and of those guys how many actually last? Just curious as to what you think since you have such a good handle on the D league.

I think it all depends on the situation. The Lakers shipped Ryan Kelly to the D-League early last year and he tore it up! When the injury bug hit, he was ready to step up and play with the big boys, at least partially because he had kept his game sharp. I also believe Miles logged a lot of D-League time when he was in his rookie year with the Pacers. So, in those cases, I think it was the big club sending them down with a healthy endorsement and show of faith - you're young, we believe in you, you are better off playing then sitting.

At the same time, there has to be some comfort in being up with the big club, competing against the rotation guys during the rare in-season practices, and just being in the face of the coaching staff and front office on the road, during shootaround, pre-game, etc. It's a lot easier to show off your work ethic in person in front of the people who most matter.

But, the NBA is a cruel business. Going down to the D-League gives you a chance to show your stuff against every team, which might increase your chances of catching on elsewhere if your stint with the club who sent you there doesn't work out.

I hope for Andre, its more of the Ryan/Miles situation.

I think the hybrid model that more teams are utilizing these days is best for the players under NBA contract. Practicing regularly against NBA players will develop your game, but you do need the game time to put all that practice into action and play against somebody other than the guy you go against in practice all the time. More and more teams seem to be letting their end of bench guys get a D League game here and there and of course we march ever closer to having at least 30 teams. It is now even used to help rehab injured players back into game shape, with Marcus Smart making an appearance down there last week. According to the D League website, 117 of 446 players on NBA opening day rosters had some D League experience:
http://dleague.nba.com/news/alumni/

Here is their all-time records for players contracted to D League teams who got a callup:
http://dleague.nba.com/news/all-time-callups/

For those without NBA contracts, the real question is whether it is worth it to play in the D League for that shot at an NBA deal or whether heading overseas and probably having to wait until the next season for another NBA shot is the better option. Hopefully over time, D League contracts do rise a bit.

Good stuff guys, thanks a lot. I completely forgot about Miles and Ryan getting D League time. I am a Heat fan and we haven't really utilized the D League that well in my opinion. I think James Ennis got some time, but he played mostly in Australia last season. Hopefully this works out well for Andre, the Heat could sure use another shooter, and if he develops some Defense in the D then that will be all that much better. The Heat are allowing an awful FG percentage this season, opponents are shooting above 50%. I think Andre has a talent that the Heat can utilize so I am confident he will stick with the team in the long run. Thanks again for the feedback guys.

Miles' D League experience is a little different from Ryan's in that Miles never did catch on with the Pacers, the team that repeatedly moved him up and down. But I expect it did help his game, so he was ready for the opportunity with Phoenix when it came.

that was great to see! Andre never displayed much of the passing or ballhandling skills at Duke as in that video. Also, he didn't drive to the basket one on one much either. What a wild day of D League Saturday was (Los Angeles 175 Reno 152 really happened).

I don't know much at all about basketball but how can Andre be in the NBA and Seth not? Seths stats vs Andre's at Duke weere better. He does really well in the D- League. I love both guys but with my very limited knowledge if I was an NBA coach I would take Seth....

For players who are borderline NBA players, picking the right team to go to Summer League with and the right team to go to training camp with can make all the difference. Even if Miami though Seth was a better player than Andre, they are not necessarily going to just cut Andre and pick up Seth because Andre has been with the team all season and knows their playbook and knows what is expected of him. Without knowing the exact nature of any offers the two players were considering, it is hard to know what the right decisions may have been in hindsight. One theory that I have heard is that teams that suspect that they are going to be bad are reluctant to sign extra shooters, although Orlando's other offseason moves seem to indicate they were trying to strengthen their roster, but they had a lot of other young guards they have a big interest in developing.

Andre found himself in a good situation in Miami where an extra shooter was needed. He beat out a group of other rookies for that last spot and must have continued to impress the staff because he survived against an NBA veteran when they needed to waive a player.

All that said, I believe that if Seth continues to be one of the top D League players, he will get at least one ten day deal to show what he can do. From there all the same things apply. Getting into the right situation and getting enough game time in those ten days is critical.

Andre has a clear position in the NBA. He is a 2 guard with NBA level athleticism and an above average shot. Seth doesn't have a clear NBA position. He might not be good enough to play the point in the NBA and isn't big enough nor athletic enough to play the 2 guard. It's a very similar problem that Nolan had in finding a place in the NBA.

The entire league descends on Santa Cruz for a few days at the new location for the Showcase. This is usually the one time that the higher ups in NBA front offices see these games live and there are international teams scouting as well, so it is a good time to impress. Money quote:
“It’s hard to get in the league; it’s harder to stay in the league,” he said. “That’s what I’m trying to do.”

Yes, there was apparently a weird situation in which the Celtics called Andre up on Thursday but then sent him back to Maine after one practice (http://www.masslive.com/celtics/index.ssf/2015/01/andre_dawkins_recalled_from_ma.html). No real explanation from the team, presented as just another part of their continuing evaluation of Andre--so hard to tell whether they were serious about bringing him up right then and changed their minds or just wanted to get a closer look.

My theory right now is that he may not have picked the right NBA team to go to training camp with to set himself up for an NBA deal. Of course I have no idea what his other offers may have looked like as he received a pretty large partial guarantee from Orlando so it would seem like there may have been multiple teams interested.

As a result, Seth has basically spent all season at shooting guard since Orlando also had Peyton Siva in camp and cut him and had him go to the D League. That means that Seth had a whole season of tape growing into a role as a point guard and now he has a full season of tape playing a different position completely. That said, given all of the various players who have gotten a shot this season, one would have to think that he would eventually get a 10 day shot.

Just when we bring it up, it looks like Seth will get a 10 day deal with the Suns, the other team he played for over the summer. After their four point guard roster for most of the season, an injury to Brandon Knight leaves them with only Eric Bledsoe to play there, so it seems like Seth and Archie Goodwin could get at least a brief shot to slide over from combo roles to backup point guard.

Thinking it might be time for Seth to look to play abroad next season and make some actual money. Looks like the NBA types are not going to buy his combination of size and skills, alas.

I agree that this offseason will be an interesting decision time for Seth. Reportedly Seth will have made something in the region of $225,000 this season if he is not signed by an NBA team (add $50,000 or so for any other 10 day deals he signs). His reported offers overseas from the summer will have been around double that amount. Considering that Seth has no family to feed and nobody around him looking for handouts when they can chase richer members of the family, I could see why he might feel like taking his chances at a possible NBA deal would be worth it. I would argue that for rookie seasons, taking a chance at the NBA Training Camp/D League route is a good idea as your overseas value will be lower with no professional track record to show. Seth and Andre each ended up better financially by staying stateside than they could have been overseas.

He should get another shot at summer league, where he can then gauge training camp interest. He got a pretty sizable partial guarantee from Orlando which probably made his decision to stay easier. If teams are giving him that level of offer again, trying it again might not be a bad idea. I do agree that teams seem to not have the same level of interest in him as a year ago despite putting up bigger numbers this season. His positional ambiguity is probably going to continue to hurt him in both directions with the NBA. Overseas then becomes a more interesting option. Seth may continue to feel that making a reasonable amount of money, even if it is not as much as he could make, is still worth it to stay here. Basque Country and Munich are fine places to live (that's where his most widely reported offers were from) but it pulls him away from his family. Even though he's no longer in Santa Cruz, where he was often able to see his brother and mother, the rest of his family has been able to watch him several times this season. They all got to see him in D League All Star festivities he could see his brother and father as well. That has to be worth something.

It would be interesting to see what kinds of offers he would get and where he would be interested in playing. He was reported more entry-level European offers after his last year at Duke and then more mid-level EuroLeague offers last season. China seems like it might be a good fit for his game with combo guards making very solid transitions there frequently.

It would be interesting to see what kinds of offers he would get and where he would be interested in playing. He was reported more entry-level European offers after his last year at Duke and then more mid-level EuroLeague offers last season. China seems like it might be a good fit for his game with combo guards making very solid transitions there frequently.

This is a very solid analysis. I definitely agree it made sense for Seth to stay here this year. Next season, barring some very positive signs during summer league/training camp, abroad would seem like a better option from a professional standpoint. But of course, as you point out, Seth is in the enviable position of not needing to support anyone but himself and, for that matter, having a family that could support him if necessary. So he can make choices that take into account a possible preference to live in the US, closeness to family and friends, etc., as well as compensation.

Quite a coincidence. Did they wear the same coloured shirt pre and after game?

Andre, 8pm ET: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GER-Oke-c2c

Due to an uncertain technology situation, I may not quite be able to do the usual update tomorrow tonight. Seth had 33 points in 33 minutes in a 122-110 Erie win over Grand Rapids.

Andre had 20 points in 31 minutes in Sioux Falls's 98-91 loss to Fort Wayne.

Both play on Saturday, although during another important game for at least part of the time so replay or highlights are probably the best options. Seth's season will likely end barring a late callup (they do happen). Andre will be in the playoffs.

Yesterday Seth finished his season with 12 points in 30 minutes in a loss. He finished the season second in scoring and first in three point and free throw percentage. His shooting splits end at 48/47/93.

Andre had 8 points in 17 minutes in a loss. His first playoff game will be televised. More details on that later.

Thanks for your efforts with this thread. I would have hoped that you would have had to post fewer updates with Andre and Seth in the NBA, but unfortunately they didn't have as many opportunities as I would have hoped. Interesting decisions for these two. Keep the NBA dream alive or take more money and cool life experiences in Europe?

I always call this the thread that I do not want to have to post in.

Seth has been covered in depth, but Andre does have an interesting decision. He made far more this season even with basically no NBA gametime than he could have overseas. With some pro track record now, he would be in position to make more money overseas next season than he would have right out of college. A lot of it will again come down to the size of guarantee that teams are willing to give him to be a part of their training camp.

Agreed! It would be great if both guys were able to lock up some NBA contracts next season. They both had stellar D-League seasons, and both sniffed the NBA for a while, but didn't do much up there. Seems like the NBA is always looking for 3pt shooters, and these guys were the premier D-League shooters. In the game highlights it looked like both pretty much always did more than just shoot, passing, driving, etc., so maybe that'll help as a selling point for training camp invites and then hanging on in the league.

Bumping this again.

Andre is one of the players planning to participate in the D League Elite Mini Camp running tomorrow and Tuesday:
http://dleague.nba.com/news/nba-development-league-elite-mini-camp-participants-list/

Basically this is an event in Chicago that all of the front office personnel can attend since they are in town for the Draft Combine. This is a big opportunity to find a team interested for summer league which of course helps determine interest for training camps.
